When excavating some livingspace yesterday, we discovered we are actually living in the second caverns.
We forbade the hunters from carrying bolts and drafted them into permanent guard duty.
wasting metal bolts on zombie groundhogs....

In case of famine,
IIRC lavish meals take 3 ingredients, but are created in an equal stack of meals, which don't vary in nutritional value.

...speaking of famine, when you have beehives, will dorfs eat them when hunting vermin?

anyway, my experience is that usually dwarven deities look like a male/female dwarf. maybe dorf gods are boring and unimaginative?

@work I use a laptop that vents to the right, causing a very hot mouse-hand. I'm not running DF there though, just the default Office(r) apps. I figure running DF when breaching the caverns would probably melt its keyboard. ;)

news: recent immigrant wave more than doubled pop.
basic stockade now has 3 fortified towers crewed with/patrolled by 2 marksdwarves each.
Those squads could be expanded to 4, but more would require expansion of the stockade.
Had my part-time assault squad get rid of the zombie groundhogs, -horses, -crundle, -rabbits that were crowding the map.
Annoyingly, caged zombies are scary as hell.
Elves showed up to trade, apparently in their reality we are not at war...oh well  need to empty the finished goods stockpiles anyhow.
Priorities are now bedding for those homeless and armour for the guard, I'm sure we are at least not friendly with the goblins.

A settlement?

AFAIK you can manually designate a system as being owned by any empire/faction on the starmap?
But it's been almost a year since I played a few games.

I think you could order them to partrol around along the fortifications.
This should cause them to try to walk the perimeter, see an enemy and stop at the Fortification to shoot it, kill, repeat. those that cannot see any would continue the walk.

restricting them to a burrow of the wall + their stockpiles should help too.

again: earrings cannot be worn, instruments cannot be played, toys cannot be toyed, tools are for tools, crowns cannot be worn....well, you get the picture.
Tradegoods are only useful for trading.
(and artefacts cannot be traded.)

They can be stolen though IIRC, which would create an instant berserker legendary dwarf.

Toady has mentioned inns recently, which would imply that possibly these items will get more meaning soon. :)

I managed to have my fort die of dehydration without noticing, (damn message spam) and saved over it.
that reduced the fun a bit.

Started a new fort in a terror area and am now disappointed about the lack of corpses from zombies. Also cagetraps suck...stink vs zombies.
stockade wall is finishedl, built entirely from deadwood.
busy digging into the underworld in order to find non-zombie action and fuel/magma.
First layer is only zombie crundle/caveogre/trog... only the spiders seem alive, but even more elusive than usual.
Planning to try out this ' danger room'  training I've heard about.

in local news: a bunch of badgers dug up a soccer field looking for grubs.
Government has a mandate forbidding badger hunting.


Do critters (other than vermin) dig up plants/fields in DF?


I've never seen it, but I'm not that observant. :p
Some critters have stolen edible food items since forever, but only items not unharvested stuff afaik.

Oh look, the glitch with bone artifacts seems to be fixed. I just got a gold-studded yak bone bed!

huh? what glitch is that?
Wasn't there something with decorating with bone, transmuting your stuff?
I have an artifact goblin bone mace, decorated with goblin bone and polarbear bone.


Personally, I'm having a refined coal shortage... must be corruption I have hundreds of bars in bins, but the smithies are just not seeing the stuff.
I'll try to move it to a bin-les pile.  :-\

Managed the last siege badly.
A mixed squad in training that was supposed to protect my marksdwarves decided to charge the bunch of axegobs in two's when the archers did not chow up in time.
All but two of them died to lost heads etc.
Then the archers and my miner squad turned up and struck blood.

the delay was most likely caused by me turning everyone off duty in order to haul the recycled elf/gob clothing to the damn human traders... who ignorerd the darn invasion btw.
