But my map doesn't have natural obsidian--so it doesn't allow me to specify using obsidian as a building material. And so I have unusable chunks of obsidian around the place that are only good for atom smashing as a result--and I'd like to avoid creating more

This... I find highly curious... and would not have expected. ..it must be a slug.

edit: never mind. read the ninja-posts.

A LP-aurora just started here on Bay12 with 8players, RPing seperate newly TN nations on Earth.
Otherwise any military SciFi will work. . . or did you mean what Steve et al. write, inspired on Aurora?
I'd like some advice on that too. :)

I use expendable 800 ton survey ships, or sometimes just long range drones with survey buoys.
Very early I sometimes use the expendable version, but later on, I tend to use jumpcapable craft with experienced crew as well.
Never went for the heavy 'Enterprise' explorer concept; too much fuel cost.
Never used buoys or drones, for survey purposes, yet it sounds cool.

You learned several things here:

-jumpgates work in pairs.
-found jumpgates are usually singletons, forming traps for your (cheap)surveyships and intrastellar cargo.
-putting military drives on a heavy civilian ship like colonizers, constructors etc is a bad idea.
-now you know why military ship designs are so stingy about mass.
-civilian construction has no rush.
-jumpgates have no max shipsize.
;)

I'd like to point out at this time, that enemies can use your gates without needing your permission.
It would be prudent to post some system defenses on the Sol side.

I've found aliens pretty frequently around binary habitables, have not done much beyond exploration and dying though, so it might be a fluke.

Given the percentage of non-humans living in cities, there should be a lively trade in goods for these minorities as well.

At the least, inhabitant race should have an impact on demand for specific racial items in the overall trade balance of a comunity/site.

DF Suggestions / Re: DF Eternal Suggestion Voting

Is there already a suggestion to ignore some event messages (a)?

Some circumstances cause a virtual waterfall of message spam, for instance one of my current dwarves has lost both arms, now instead of learning how to use her feet or teeth instead, she keeps reporting that action X is cancelled: too injured.
An option to either ignore the cancelled, too injured or messages from the dwarf in question would be appreciated. (about tenth suggestion i'd vote on.) :)

Nor food stockpiles in any inns.
Well, there are no inns yet, so there wouldn't be any food stockpiles in them anyway. I didn't see any food shops though, now that you mention it. Also, two shop types are currently always empty, one of them with the general store/cloth sign, and the other with the crown(?) sign, so I guess there's still some things to be done. And just noticed that the shop chests aren't placed for the shopkeepers to keep their money - or is that in cabinets now?
>Yeah, noticed too that the chests were gone. Oh well, this is a peek into the development of town layout. We are expecting too much pollish. ;)
>I figured the shops with the leather-symbol (béta) were inns, because of the beds and cabinets.
>Anyhow, I'd prefer it when the bulk of goods were stored in a warehouse/backroom/attic/cellar and only a selection of goods were presented on tables/cabinets/chests in the actual shop.
e.g. Talk to a shopkeeper to request more of a certain type of item and get told to come back tomorrow or in a few hours, so that shopboy can go to stockpile and retrieve the goods.
Same concept for clothiers etc: to have them produce fitted items. As is, it can be very frustrating to be a rich dwarf tombraider. :p

Tables don't block movement. Shopping would be pretty hard if they did the way things work right now.
huh? I thought they did.

I see some mushrooms growing in some tennements. logical, but disturbing nonetheless. :)

Loving the metropolitan feel of the place. :D Lots of elves and dwarves in this human town, haven't spotted any kobold yet, but assume those hide themselves in the sewers? No goblins either...town at war or are goblins just to antisocial to be allowed into town?

About the varied grate colours: I understand production of stuff is varied in material. Yet, wouldn't this be a most typical item a mayor would mandate? identical grates of a single type of metal/stone.
Buildings built out of different materials is more likely...I think Tarn mentioned this in a talk though.

I did not see any stairs/hatches leading down into the sewrs/crypts/cellars. Nor food stockpiles in any inns.

also : bottomright town1 119 : this building is filled with tables, those people in the backroom are going to starve unless they can destroy/move the furnitre around.

Press 'c' and you will know for certain whether those goblins at the gate are there for trade or for your marrow. :)

Rem is spamming the magma out of me!
She keeps complaining about her missing arms and how it is so difficult to grab her socks and she needs to wear socks because she has horribly huge scars on both legs.
Maybe I should find a way to rid her of her legs as well.

also: My medical staff has been murdered by berzerking cripples.
We had our first haunting, this pushed a surviving hero over the edge, who had seen her friend dismembered, rotting and now hiding in his bedroom cabinet.
fresh meat has arrived to fill our quiet halls..
