You cut the feed and dip a nod to your retinue as they break away, either going back to sleep or attending to their new assignments. Emma is the last to leave, pausing at the door frame with a faint, wry smile.

"Peace has been good, hasn't it?"

"...yeah." You nod, returning the smile with a smirk.

"Goodnight."

You wave as you return to bed. Your datapad gives a ping --

"Good morning or evening, everyone! Welcome to the Valhol's Retributionists live war stream! Brought to you by our wonderful sponsor, the Holy Fortress-State of Pheonix! Please sit back and enjoy the highlights after operational security specialists have cleared them!" A bright, blue, cheerful androgynous figure chirps to life, announcing itself as you open the link. It gives a wave. Then the feed ends.

...huh.

Sleep doesn't arrive before there's another knock at your door.

"Pheonix. Your tour is ready to receive you." A pleasent voice calls.

You rise and dress, slipping a coat over your shoulders and raking your fingers through the mess of your hair. You slip on the heavy spacer boots, taking great comfort in the synthetic leather and soft insole. You tighten your sash around you waist and emerge into the hallway.

You take in what remains of your entourage. Emma wears an airy white dress -- a las-pistol sticking out of her belt. Cephie breathes through a gas-mask, maintaining her masquerade. The rest are dressed plainly in SEED scholar uniforms; the only two that further stand out are the Pirate Twins in their gray, bulky jumpsuits -- flanked by their void armor.

The twin armors give a snappy salute when they spot you. Ethan and Finn flash grins at each other and give you a thumbs up.

"We were up all night working on that." Ethan begins.

"The armor doesn't like you." Finn continues,

"We had to explain the contract." Ethan finishes with a nod. "Even then, they say they're doing it 'ironically.'"

You shake your head, turning to Emma and Mellone. "What's on the schedule today?"

"Well, according to the agenda the Outlanders 'submitted,' we'll be going to breakfast with the family. Then a brief tour of the Temple of Money and War, followed by a bazaar tour. After that, they wish us to attend a military parade, then a luncheon. An inspection of the aqueducts, and finally, dinner in the mountains. There are hot springs there." Emma reads from her datapad, scrolling with a swiping finger.

"Does that sound acceptable, Mother Pheonix?" Mellone questions, politely.

Emma's datapad sparks to life with a feed of the council chambers, revealing Isela, Hoganson and Geoyde. They awkwardly look at the camera as it is moved around shakily.

"Good Morning." You state, without cheer, "Isela. Do you need Outlander support?"

"No." Comes Isela's terse response. "And furthermore, I recommend no further communication on this platform or others for operational security purposes, Mother Pheonix."

"No."

William's jaw sets as he stares at you. "I can do it, Pheobe. If it helps." He grins, "I'll be fine. It can't be worse than my father."

"No." You repeat, turning to open the door. William audibly grits his teeth.

"Mellone. Would we be able to call upon the Outlanders for military aid?" You question.

"Maybe? We'd have to pay, but I can negotiate it." Mellone murmurs.

"I would speak to Isela if you intend to interfere In her strategy." Emma points out, "No doubt she already has a plan."

((So, as many have probably noticed I haven't been being the best GM. I apologize. I started having a social/love life again. Plus working two jobs. This has left me exhausted. We have, by my reckoning, two more acts before this story draws to a close, whatever close it may be. After the end of this act, in a while, I will be putting it on haitus for about a week to set up a wiki and formalize some rules/rulings, fix formatting, as well as see if I can get some art done. So, that will be fun. I hope. Tomorrow night I intend to post a mega-update of the tour/battle..))

You curl your lips into a tight frown as you glance down at the messaging app once more. After a fierce internal discussion, you gesture William into your room. He glances at the others and steps inside. The door shuts, and you're left alone with the Warlord's son.

Then, quietly, you explain the 'demon' armor. In great, gory detail. How it works. The entity within. The pain and the darkness -- and the rage it incites in its hapless user. William listens stoicly, and, above all else, silently. "...Its a true sadist. It enjoys the pain of its user. Enjoys the anger. Do you think you could handle it?"

"No." WIlliam shifts, "But I'll do it anyway. Murdach will be there -- he can put me down if I go too far."

"William--"

"Pheobe. Is this an order?"

((This is a friendly reminder for completely unrelated reasons. Please keep discourse civil and calm. The majority doesn't always rule, but arguments made in anger may not away Pheobe. And remember -- arguments made to Pheobe hold more sway than those towards the other voices. But the consensus has more power than Pheobe.))

Emma pulls out her datapad, and pulls something up. A video, shot from a grainy cheap camera, but far better than anything this planet had to offer before you made contact with the Pirates.

Emma's lips curl into a frown as she reads the chatlog. "I...I don't know anything about that thing. Just that Silas is learning from it. He's taking a lot of resources. But...he's promising a lot."

Then, quietly, "I don't think he's sleeping any more. He's on a lot of [amphetamines]. He's gathered a staff-- they're all practically worshipping that thing..."

You sit patiently while Emma messages the Demon armor for you and -- your own datapad makes a soft 'bing'. You note a history of messages from Emma, from Isela, all of them describing the situation much the same way as Emma's summary. But the final, and newest messages is from [Flesh]

Spoiler: Chatlog (click to show/hide)

You hesitate.

"William? How quickly can you be there?" You question.

"Tonight. This morning if the Outlanders let us borrow a craft."

"I can arrange that." Mellone nods.

"Good. Get suited up and bring your Warmachines. You're under Isela's command."

"I'll send her a message." Emma volunteers, "Letting her know you're on your way."

Anything else?

"He agrees with Isela's plan. He isn't deploying his forces until tomorrow or the next day, however."

Should I send William to reinforce?

"She's refusing to go into specifics. Hoganson and Geoyde think its a waste and we should retreat and gather our strength." Emma shrugs, "Isela is refusing to retreat."

This is politics. Not courtship.

"According to Isela? No. Eric has been deployed as a morale booster and force multiplier. The Retributionists are going to be assisting with a total of six [Voidmarines], under the command of Captain Murdach." Emma reports. "Thornton and Family Assets are mobilizing to assist with defense of local settlements."

You and Rekhyt sneak in through the same way you snuck out. The only thing that changes is the guard. Rekhyt's nimble fingers dance to deposit a bag of coins into the woman's pocket. She says nothing. Sees nothing. Her eyes are straight ahead. Disciplined. Rekhyt slips off his mask as the two of you cross the breezeway, stowing it away. You follow suit. It isn't until you reach your room's window does Rekhyt relax.

With a clink, he pops your window open, turning and giving you a very dramatic bow. "Lady Goddess."

"Lord Rekhyt." You make to step up into your window, before pausing.

[19] [9 vs. 2.] With a single step you close the distance between the two of you and wrap your hand around Rekhyt's neck as you pull him close--

You shut the window behind you and close the curtains on a stunned Rekhyt, only allowing yourself a triumphant grin as you're sure he's out of sight.

Rekhyt, for good or ill, is on our side. You remove the heavy outer wear, folding it gently and setting it to one side. You pause mid-fold, then, My assessment is he seems to value personal freedoms, the poor, and independence. Intelligent, capable, and devious.

...was that okay? It seemed like we wanted him on our side, but I couldn't tell. I don't understand our plans, sometimes. You wipe the ash from the street from your boots and set them aside. After a non-urgent message to Geoyde to start drawing up plans to integrate the Eastern Outland economy with the Holyland.

It isn't even an hour later when William, Emma, Mellone and Crusader Cephie stand outside your door. They look well-rested, with bright, shiny eyes and stiff backs, but they wear frowns, and they shift uncomfortably when you open the door. Mellone, on the other hand, is a sleep-deprived mess. Her hair is a frizzy, untamed mess, and she sips tea from a ceramic cup. She dowses where she stands.

"A town on the edge of the Holy Fire Exclusion Zone is under a full assault by Plague." Cephie crisply reports after you stare at the four in silence.

"Evacuation is already underway. Reinforcements are starting to arrive." William murmurs, shifting.

"Isela has briefed the council on the overview, and is already taking steps. Hoganson and Geoyde want you to overrule her." Emma reports, with a straightening of her hair. " I trust Isela, but we agreed to let you make the call."

"You have access now. But if the temple doesn't get paid, you don't either. The God of Money has a trading empire. The thieves bribe their God to help. I embezzle." Rekhyt shrugs.
