DF Gameplay Questions / Werebeast in library
« on: January 17, 2020, 12:02:26 am »
I need this infected scholar to keep learning and writing. If he is in a 1x1 square in the library (fortified) will he take part in discussions on topics? And will he stay sane and live? Thanks, hoping this dwarf (my favorite) can accomplish great things eventually. (I'd like books written by my were elk dwarf).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military dwarf not pillaging
« on: December 18, 2019, 10:32:10 pm »
Okay I figured it out. I was thinking all wrong about it. I am working on an above ground fort over the main one. I constructed floors all over out of stone.. Over the ramp going down. I guess it was completed part way through the military leaving but it blocked his pathing from where he was.

Thanks for the answer though, appreciate it!

DF Gameplay Questions / Military dwarf not pillaging
« on: December 18, 2019, 10:09:52 pm »
Dwarf won't go pillage so others are off screen and he's just chillin around the fort for over 1 season.. I tried removing him from the squad but it didn't resolve. So he's back in it but not leaving. Thoughts?

I don't have many so those 10 being unusuable is tricky

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: December 18, 2019, 02:58:21 pm »
Fort ended in bloodbath. Lone survivor was not sane. Choked a 10+ kill axe user to death while being ?paralized waist down?

Said dworf had been punished previously and forced into trial by combat unarmed vs a badger. Lost use of a hand and got cut up bad, but lived. Forgot about them till they saved the day, sorta (all dead but them).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New player, want to say hi
« on: December 18, 2019, 02:19:16 pm »
Hello! I wanted to say hi to you all and express my appreciation for this community. I have some trouble with anxiety irl and I find this forum and the DF community at large to be just so wholesome and good for me that I had to drop in and let you know.

You guys are awesome. Toady, you're the man. I am so excited about the directions you take the game in. When I was a young kid, dreaming of imaginary worlds and games with my younger brother, we wished for games created by people with a vision for something great, and I didn't realize I'd find something like what we talked about, actually realized. It may sound odd but my life is better because you made dwarf fortress. Don't have much money at the moment but someday soon I'll be trying to help you out!

And community, whoever you odd and hilarious people are, thank you. I know few things that make me laugh out loud as often as reading some of the things you guys write. You know what would be really awesome? Maybe someday there will be a dwarf fortress convention or something and I'll get to meet some of you oddballs =)

Thanks again you guys are awesome

DF General Discussion / Re: *We need your help with game ending stress*
« on: December 15, 2019, 05:31:31 am »
New player, had about 5 forts now ranging from 1-5 years in duration.

If I see a dwarf is stressed I read their thoughts and feel pretty good about being able to improve their situation. Unless its after a bloody siege. I'm learning I have to quarantine those. If my dwarfs kinda ignore my commands tho it can be tricky. I do sometimes kill high stress dorfs discretely.

On the dwarf labor screen I have numbers that show stress 0, -5000, etc. I'm not sure if that is an addon or base game but it helps me a looot. If that's an addon I'd suggest something similar for new players to track the meta stress of their colony.

DF General Discussion / Re: A Little Story about the Fortress Zefon

I really enjoyed this story thanks!

I'll take my chances with a military dorf or tavern performer.  :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: !science! of killing elves (raiding)
« on: December 13, 2019, 08:00:34 pm »
Don't know much about it or exact values, but when raiding, body size matters more than in fort mode play.

Crutch doesn't mean no shield and it's a rather heavy weaker blunt weapon. I wouldn't change your weapon assignments over it generally, though if you don't have steel yet having sharp weapon+blunt option like metal shield or crutch can provide a backup for handling armored enemies.

And dwarves take hits on a random body part when falling. Can be legs, can be upper body, can be head.

Those are some cool facts that I would never have figured out. Thank you sir. I might have to learn about navigating raws and see if I can locate any of the raiding #'s. I'm having trouble with losses even when ambush and tactics are pretty high and decently armed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lazy overseer fort

Taking notes

Infinate fishing hole
Immortal manager
Many coffins/beds/farm plots/shiny things
Foolproof automatic def system.

A follow up question: Do werecreatures, and necromancers need food?

DF Gameplay Questions / Lazy overseer fort

Can I automate farming/brewing, make few shiny things, designate large areas as dorms or free beds and let years pass?

Or what is the ultimate lazy observer fortress?

DF Gameplay Questions / !science! of killing elves (raiding)
« on: December 09, 2019, 04:18:59 pm »
Greetings fellow dorfs. Soon after striking the earth we angered our neighboring elves. We are waging a war against the elves and are in need of a deeper understanding of offensive warfare. General urist was incompetent (rip) and the war outlook is grim, unless our new commander does better. Our knowledge is lacking unfortunately.

Can a superior leader shed some light and help us become less incompetent?

How impactful are these relative to eachother?
  • Tactics
  • # of dworfs in squad
  • # of squads on mission
  • quality of armor
  • quality of weapons
  • strength of wardog relative to elfs/dorfs

Unfortunately getting full adamantine legendary + 5 dworfs is in the distant future and we being generally impoverished must win with some squads wearing whatever pots and pans are around the fort.

Somewhat related to our incompetent brawling is our equally incompetent thieving:
Is a flock of dworfs more sneaky than a lone dworf?
Why does the sneakiest bastard in the fort always chose to man-fight packs of trolls?

In closing we are angry at the neighboring elven civilization but it seems we are generally incompetent as well. Any general tips on mitigating losses and having regular success (with ragtag but budding military/rangers) is appreciated.

P.S. Once I figure out hospitals I hope to make a batallion of legendary crutch walkers. What weapon should they use and does the crutch mean no shield? Also if dwarfs fall down z level chutes do they break legs or break everything equally?
