I had no idea you could do that. I'll have to play some...

DF General Discussion / Re: DF causing new MacBook Pros to overheat?
« on: April 27, 2010, 05:54:36 pm »
The MacBook and MacBook Pro vent heat along the entire screen hinge. With the lid open, the heat is forced up along the screen, a little like the defroster on your car. With the lid closed, it vents straight back below the hinge. The air intake is actually through the gaps between the keys and the unibody frame.

Would it be better to vent the heat through the screen side? Sure. Maybe you've noticed a product called the iPad. Progress takes time.

Actually, my biggest annoyance with Mac is its price. All Mac product are ridiculously overpriced.  If they weren't as good, I would have returned it asap. There is really no justification for the price tag, other than to hold onto the part of the market that collect enormous amounts of photographs that is not porn and will pay through the nose to follow a passing trend.

If it was overpriced, you would have returned it. And since Apple continues to grow marketshare and sales, clearly they aren't overpriced for the broader market. Given that Apple is now #2 on the S&P 500 index, ahead of Microsoft and HP and miles ahead of everyone else in the tech industry and only behind Exxon, I think we need to give them some credit for knowing what they're doing.

I think the best way to put this is this: They put looks over functionality.

[snip]

(Excuse any mistakes...im using IE and i cant see anything i type because it screws up and goes to the top as i type anything.)

I'm thinking your disclaimer disqualifies you as any kind of judge of functionality.

Bottom line for a lot of us - Mac hardware allows us to run Mac OS, Windows, and UNIX simultaneously in a fully supported way. Having a machine ship, with full support from a location not 5 miles from where I live (I have 4 such locations, actually), with apache, PHP, and all the other goodies preloaded and properly configured, gives me flexibility that no other manufacturer offers. There's no shifting of blame between the hardware OEM and Microsoft, there's no 'go look in this forum and compile that thing to fix your driver issue'. I've got work to do, and nobody else matches what Apple can offer - which is actually a shame. Apple's not doing anything groundbreaking, but everyone else is so fixated on turning out bargain basement hardware and support that they aren't investing in anything that really helps me as a user.

Since Toady has mentioned he's working on the merge now, I think the new map will drop soon. We'll set a new deadline once it does, but it'll be 3 weeks after.

I'm in year 4 with a FPS of 35 and 80 dwarves, that's with running water which is pretty darn good relative to 40d. Yeah, the profuse blood is, well, interesting. If you really want to see it get out of hand, have your dwarves walk through a waterfall - they'll track blood everywhere.

The map is quite good. Y'all will bitch about the fact that I included an odd number of seeds, or I didn't include a bar of electrum, because HOW IN GOD'S NAME CAN ANYONE GET A PROPER START WITHOUT A BAR OF ELECTRUM!!! but I think you'll get over it.

Neither the CPU nor the chassis is overheating. If either did, the system would throttle back by design. Does it run hot when you've got the CPU up to 11? Sure, but the truth is that the CPU is turning out a certain amount of heat that needs to be dissipated, no matter what case you have it in. The alternative for cooling the case is to add fans, which kills battery life. It's a trade-off.

That said, I've run DF on numerous MacBook Pros including the Air and never had a heating problem. Curious that everyone is concluding Apple designs shitty computers (pretty much the same design with the same cooling system they've used the last 2 years, with millions of unit sold and no heating issues) rather than these guys are either wrong, or that they got a bad unit.

Sent from a 15" MBP running DF right this moment at a comfortable 35C.

In the first year, usually outside. Later I'll usually bring it inside or nearly so and put it in an airlock between the fortress proper and the outside. In the new version I've taken to putting it far inside so that it's past the barracks and hospital. Defending the fortress has gotten somewhat harder with the changes and I'm not so eager to put my laborers so close to the outside.

The lack of bugfixes suggests to me that he's working on the merge. Mac and Linux players are still (largely) left out of things.

Man, these are emo dwarves. Two of their friends get cut in half by gobbos and they go off and tantrum. I swear it was easier to keep them happy in 40d - some legendary meals was often all it took.

This is going round like a Benny Hill sketch...

Actually, after the cookie dispenser comments I was thinking we were heading squarely down Dwarf Idiocracy direction.

I've been playing the new embark to see if there were any unforseen problems, and I think people will like it a lot. Elves are here (fewer are living than when I embarked) and there are more geographic/geologic options than the first site. In my first 5 attempts (I have a particularly ambitious fortress design) in 3 I had at least 2 dwarves dead within a month and in the remaining 2 I had the fortress wiped out before the first caravan (I'm chalking that up to bad luck <cough>) and I can confirm that goblinite is available in abundance. No forgotten beasts yet, however, but I'm only in year 2.

I'm curious to know - Are you going to "regen" and find the site again with the same seeds with the (post?)merge-version is released? Just to be sure in regards to any business with differences in the raws and what-not.

I don't think it'll matter since the save carries the raws now, so you just dump the .04 raws in the .03 save, but it might be worth doing just to see if it makes any difference.

And Imp is correct, I'm going to wait until the Mac and Linux people can get equal shot at it.

253
Ok, I found it. It's pretty awesome. No undead.

Players will be able to play either map.

254
Heh. Untamed wilds/terrifying/joyous wilds + sand + brook + massive amounts of magnetite/flux all in a 4x4.

I think I'll just keep this one for myself...

255
Ok. I'm going to do a regen and will upload it when the merge drops.

It seems there are going to be more problems with undead as we go along. Right now I have 2 zombie horses in the river. They don't drown because, well, they're zombies, I can't kill them with bolts and they scare off the traders (now trapped in the ne corner of the west bank of the river). My only recourse is to dam the river but there's another zombie horse down that way, so I think the only real way to get rid of them is to pump up magma and drop that on them.

That's a bit extreme, and I think it's just a matter of time before a number of players end up in my situation, so I'll be finding us a new map with no undead.

So, I'll start working on a site tonight, find something reasonable, and as soon as the merge drops, I'll upload. Same goals, same rules.
