Well, I don't want to be part of any umiman pile-on.  I hope we can all assume that both sides are approaching this in good faith so we don't need to get personal.  We all love the game or we wouldn't be jawing about it, yeah?  I think the main bone of contention isn't the criticism that adventure mode seems more directionless to a certain style of player--it does.  The disagreement centers more on tone than anything else--a thread titled "this sucks" was probably guaranteed to attract some defensive and combative feelings.  In that case there's not much actual disagreement, and most of the discussion is little more than a personality war that's just going to escalate until both sides say foolish and angry things to no purpose.

Or did that already happen?  On the internet, no less.  :-D
"this sucks" ranks right up there with "multiplayer" and "interface" in the title for attracting all kinds of hate.

Anyway, Andir, while I like your support, I'm actually right now campaigning for a return to one version ago with this version's additions... kinda. Actually, all I want is to be able to recruit people in adventurer and have them fight with me against other civs, which they refuse to do right now without way too much additional work. So, technically, I'm your enemy.
...
We're basically shareholders, and he is the CEO. Except his aim isn't profit maximization, just dividends. Unless he's being modest and is actually swimming in a cash vault while enjoying greenback cigars.
I don't agree that we are enemies.  You and I both feel that the game should be able to be played out with the greatest freedom possible.  Some of your freedoms were removed or restricted and my freedoms have yet (maybe never) to be realized.  We are just on different sides of the same plate sitting on the table.

I wholeheartedly agree that we ARE in control of the game indirectly.  Without our support the game wouldn't be where it is today.  I have not supported because I feel that the game doesn't meet my expectations for what it should be.  I have posted several suggestions (all of which were shot down by forum goers) and he will not be seeing any money from me until there is a product that meets those expectations.  If umiman has donated, I feel even worse for him losing an aspect of the game that may have been the tipping point to his donation.

So far I've seen no evidence that it's wrong to say that a piece of software is in an incomplete state, when said software is in an incomplete state (the meaning of alpha). Except that you keep telling everyone that it's wrong to say it. It's starting to sound like you don't want to hear any excuses and you want your game to work, now.
Except for the fact that I stated above.  People insist that it's broken because of the Alpha state and accept it.  There's no structured method for tracking or suggesting such states and features.  We are all pawns in a game with no control over said game.

"Just do your job and play the game.  Accept it and don't complain."

slMagnavox: I would. Gladly. If the interface was as good. If someone were to port over a version of the game featuring the interface and control improvements while maintaining the old, 2d-style gameplay, I'd gladly play that instead.

Anu: Why are you preparing an escape route right after stating that? It's like punching a guy in the face then suddenly apologizing and offering him a drink.

Again, your entire argument is a variation of the whole, "this is an alpha" thing and is about as useful in an argument as "because God made it that way". Suppose the government you abide by suddenly decided one day that the internet was illegal and anyone with an internet connection of any sort would be sent to the gulags. Would you protest or would you justify it saying, "it's just a transitional phase"? The thing is that people don't protest for what is or what has happened (if they had any kind of sense - it's impossible to change the past and present). They protest for a future event.

Understand? Sure, now you can evoke the other argumentative style, "but you can't compare Toady One to a <extreme example here>", but then you'd need to learn a lesson in similes. In other words, I'm saying this now so the main beef can be avoided in the future. It's also a nice little pre-emp that allows me to go, "I told you so" in the event when I can say "I told you so".
I can't tell you how much I agree.  The forum has the mentality that this is Toady's game and he can do what he wants, irregardless of how it breaks former relationships.  They are right, but it's ignorance of the fact that things need done that I (and you apparently) are frustrated about.  It seems like nobody is listening, acting or making suggestions on improvements... because that's the way it is.  Complacency.  Any time you stand up and suggest a change or a modification you are presented with one of a few excuses that keep circulating.  People stick their fingers in their ears, tell you it's not possible (Multiplayer), they think it will somehow break "their" game (breaking from ASCII roots), give the alpha excuse and leave it at that without [agreeing|explaining|acting], or they just plain old berate you for suggesting such a thing.

OK I'm reported, but what now?

And what's wrong? The thing that I was upset by your tone when I tried to help you or the thing that I tried to stop flamewar which is here because of you? Thanks again and it proves my point.

I didn't want to harm your dignity but it became too funny for me as for an adult man.
Reported by a troll. Funny.

However I must admit that we took part in it too so we're indirectly guilty in it too. It's just too hard to hear the same ranting when you tried to explain everything and you can't understand how it could be explained better. When the person acts this way (ignoring every answer and common sense) it mean to things: 1) Either he is not clever enough to understand what everyone tries to give him or 2) he means that we're mentally ill because we can't explain simple things to the developer from a huge company. I personally accept this as an insult.

The best answer (except ignoring the questioner which way I don't like) would be to use 2 words: "use Search" and stop this thread with this.
And I respect Red Jackard for being such an unbiased person, he tries to help while others are already yelling at each other like in some toilet reality show :D.

P.S. And I'd like to see Sean as a mod too. He's a reasonable adult man with a programming experience and a nice sense of humor. The only bad side of this would be that he'd insert "play my modbase" in every post he edits :P. Oh my, he's already inserted it in my signature!  :o.

P.P.S. More on topic
You've complained about everything in different files/folders.
Well, HERE is the prepacked version with the tileset installed for the people without a willing to customize their game.
If you want to switch graphics tileset on/off go to /data/init/init.txt and find a [GRAPHICS:] token.
The correct syntax is [GRAPHICS:OFF] or [GRAPHICS:ON].
The dffd.wimbli.com is the main file hosting site for df for now so you'll find many things there (in categories).
(Red Jackard already mentioned this site but I gave you a direct link because you provide an expression of a man who doesn't like to search by himself :)).
Jesus Christ Dude.  It's not about doing a search.  It's about making a request for an image.  Before I download and install all kinds of mods and crap for my installation, I made a VERY SIMPLE request.  You've turned this into a "make a man look the fool" thread.  For that, you are the only troll here.  I find it hilariously funny that you claim the OP is a troll to his own thread.  Pot meet kettle, I guess.

I suggest you leave this thread and quit spreading false information as well.  For the record, it's [GRAPHICS:YES] or [GRAPHICS:NO], not ON or OFF.  (at least according to the file and every resource I did find on it when I DID search for an image of someone's fortress that was using it as the ORIGINAL POST in this thread requested.

I'm done here as you seem to have taken the thread off topic by trying to explain how to get the image instead of actually providing it all the while talking down to me then berating me then trying to take it back off topic again by berating me again.  Grow up.

I don't need to know how to do it.  I don't understand why everyone keeps posting this over and over again.  I can do it myself, it's a pain IMHO to do it for every tileset and pick the one you like.  I asked for a simple preview and was berated for it.  I thought that someone could post a simple picture and this thread be done.  Thanks to the incredible lack of reading though, everyone keeps posting the same instructions over and over again on how to download and set them up which wasn't the original intent of the thread.

Thank you Red!!

And Deon, you've been reported.  I find your tone and attitude toward me demeaning and offensive.  I asked for a simple request, you've constantly talked down to me and now you are calling me a troll and an idiot.

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/List_of_user_graphics_sets

first one on the list.. thats what each animal that has a custom image looks like.  There is no fort made of dwarves, goblins, undead or whatever.

I think what the problem that is going on here is that you are assuming that the Dystopian Rhetoric Character Set is also a Tile Set... which it isn't.   Forts will look however the tile set makes them look, but the characters will look just like they do in that image on the wiki.  You are asking someone for something that really doesn't exist: a solely DR kit for all your visual needs.

So...
Quote
.. and was that such a hard thing to ask for?  People post hundred of images of half built fortresses all day long, yet there is still no image of a level done with the tile set...

...yes, it is hard to know what you want to see, and it IS best for you to spend the few minutes of your time (that you already spent a hundred fold, arguing with people in a forum) and set it up yourself.

Here, less than a minute for me to do it so you can do it too:

1) download the DIY link form the wiki (first on the list of links from the DR section or just click that DIY link on this line)
2) copy all the stuff from that graphics folder into your raw/graphics folder of your DF install and overwrite everything
3) open your init.txt and turn on the graphics: [GRAPHICS:NO] -> [GRAPHICS:YES]
4) start DF and see what it looks like.

Now, to see what it would look like with other Tile Sets, you must download those separately and again modify your init.txt file to use them.

Also sorry for the flak people are giving you, tilesets are a touchy subject around here.

I'll say, did you read all of his posts?  He was resistant to any kind of help that wasn't what he specifically asked for... a screen shot.

So what's a secondary screen? Do you mean one of those fancy programs where you have multiple desktops and you can switch between them?
Just about every OS now supports dual monitors if you have a video card that can output to two more more monitors and/or multiple video cards.
I just wish I could output to three monitors. I have the TV right next to the computer and everything.
Get a cheapo video card for the TV :P

Yeah, it would be cool, but AFAICT you'd have to mine out two Z-levels, flood one with magma, then quench it with water. That'll give you obsidian floors on two levels.
Yeah, one of these days I'm going to mine out a HUGE chunk (literally all) of the map and fill it with lava then water alternatively until I have a full block of obsidian to carve out.  I'll let the common ore melt into the lava and save the economic, metal and gems in a dumping pile somewhere  :P

Here is an easy way to stop a virus from running...
With the small possiblity your computer might explode

Hit alt-cltr-del, hit the processes tab, and repeatly hit End Process clicking yes if a dialog box pops up.
It might be a bit risky but at least you know you got the virus.
That's just an easy way to witness some very strange behavior before having to do a reboot.
I always start with lsass.exe to save myself time.  It always seems to go downhill pretty quickly after that.  It must be a virus!
