So you... depend on whichever wizard is in this tower to stay existent... At the end of this, the wizard keeping you alive might end up dead, or worse, brought to justice... Will you end up ceasing to exist then?"

"Hey hey, woah, I didn't say that. I can tell ya about my job, and my job's this gate. Ya wanna go wizard hunting, look inside."

It's a slight indignity that the goblin stayed true to his word, reducing the cups with every game lost... And so, having gotten somewhat used to the goblin's speed, she resolved to follow the marble's cup to the very end, pointing at it.

"... Can any kind of magic work?"

The goblin lifts the cup Dixie pointed at, a marble sitting innocuously under it. The goblin smiles and twirls his hands around briefly, the halo above her head from morphing from "LOSER" to "WINNER".

"See a pointy hat on me head, miss? I'm not exactly spell-tastically gifted, and me job suits me fine. I don't think you otta worries about me too much. Your friends need you more I think."

After disposing of yet another cup, the goblin places the marble inside the last remaining one.

Mama's a sayin' that e'ery one but th' TinCan here has wha'er goes in this [expletive deleted] thing. Damned if I knows what goes innit.

The bear looks at the armored brute with all the disdain an animal can manage, shakes her head, then nuzzles him as well.

Jack asks Mama to point out which silly humans have the right smell, and which ones do not.

The bear points at nuzzles everyone except for The Greenskins Holocaust.

Jack continues his examination of the door, looking for any small openings, depressions, shiny spots that get touched frequently, or any form of hidden apparatus attached to the door, basin, or walls adjacent to same.  He also checks the floor under the basin, and asks mama to smell to get any indication of what liquid was dispensed into the basin in the past.

The door fits wall-to-wall as snugly as it can, there are no openings through which one can peer in. The door doesn't appear to have any hidden levers, switches or panels of any kind. It has some ornamental Victorian designs on its surfaces but is otherwise seamless, none of the patterns give way or react when touched. The floor under the basin has a few faded stains, cause unknown. The bear reacts positively, a faint smell emanates from the basin and the source is similar to something the bear can smell on some party members right now.

"I think I've had my fill of 'fun stuff' yesterday. It's placebo at this point, but their blades still hurt."

Dixie made sure to observe more carefully this time, but may have lost track of it halfway. She pointed at the leftmost cup.

"So, you're actually not enslaved or bound to defend this gate? Were you turned or cursed into an automaton? Merely summoned?"

The goblin lifts the leftmost cup, revealing it to be empty. He then lifts the middle one, a single marble inside. He throw the third cup over his shoulder and starts shuffling the remaining two.

"Very insightful questions miss. I don't get much outta defending this here gate, it don't need my protection I can tell you, nor the walls nor the tower for that matter. They takes care of itselfs. But it is me job to open it and ter close it, and I do's my jobs. About me, I can't tell ya much. Ain't allowed to, cuz it ain't me job. A real ladykiller they call me, that's the most important thing. Another not-so-important thing is, and an obvious one mind, I run on magic. Any mechanist can stuff a million gears inna box, takes a wizardical mind to get something like me running. But I think that's nuff of me running me mouth, couldn't tell ya more if ya paid me."

The goblins stops shuffling the two cups and looks again at Dixie.

Finally finished examining the colossal antechamber, and finding it completely free of obvious traps, Jack examines the mysterious basin installed in the giant door.

The basin, tray, chute thing appears to be made of sturdy bronze. It's wide at the top, around the size of two large dinner plates, and narrows down below into a funnel-like shape, not much wider than a pebble. The "pipe" leads into the door, maybe onto the other side even, but it is difficult to make out where it might exit exacntly due to how it's attached. There doesn't appear to be anything strange otherwise about this bronze basin.

Closer inspection reveals evidence of rust stains, perhaps caused by some liquid, leading down inside the basin.

Jack rolled his eye.  Kids these days.

Giving mama a scratch on the way past the group, he begins the arduous task of checking such a colossal and garishly lit space for traps.

There are no traps, at least none in this area. It is safe to proceed, or even to go back where everyone just came from.

"Wow, they didn't notice. It worked." Dixie around a tree and towards the goblin automaton's table, scratching her cheek. "Well, now that the game's over, will you then let me hear your story? Let's play the game too while you do it, I'll just point at a cup wordlessly, is that okay?"

"Is my company that charming, heh miss? I'm honored."

The goblin starts shuffling cups around again, three this time.

"Nice crown, I hafta say. Yer glad you din't get kneething worse then this yes?"

The goblin starts chuckling to himself.

"Not much I can tell you about meself. I sit here here and looks at the gate. That's me job. You want fun stuff, allya better go look around inside."

The goblin stops shuffling the cups and looks at Dixie expectantly.

He turned towards the open gates and entered. "Okay, let's do this."

The party (save for one) crosses the now open gate, the eyes of the dragon staring blankly as they walk ahead.

They pass a neatly clipped but otherwise nondescript courtyard and enter the tower through doors which are barely distinguishable from the walls. As they walk inside they are blinded for a moment, but upon regaining vision a second later are left mesmerized by the tower's dazzling interior. There is a riot of colors and textures, ranging from creamy marble, dark-tinted wood and uneven granite to sparkling, translucent gems of every color of the spectrum, plastering every possible surface. As their eyes grow accustomed to the visual splendour they can make out other details in the room, which is rather cavernous. Chiseled pillars lead the way from the entrance to the other side, the path dotted with ornate statues and potted plants. Though the walls are alight with torches, a multitude of lamps (set inside braziers at various points in the room) shine merrily, and tinted windows let in bright sunlight, the room itself seems to seems to emanate its own source of radiant light, bathing everything with a glow which almost makes eyes hurt to look around.

Despite the many visual distractions there doesn’t seem to be anything of vital interest in the room, except for at the far side where the pillars end. At the far end of the room a few steps lead up to a magnificent door, painted bright red, huge enough to let a Mastodon in.  The door doesn’t seem to have a normal handle or knocker affixed, just what looks like a bronze chute or tray close to where a doorknob should be.

Meanwhile on the outside, where Dixie remained while everyone else sauntered inside...

((GM Note: I Deduce has both COMBAT and PASSIVE applications. I Deduce was used successfully during the goblin's first game round, and Doctor Doak deduced that there was no sleight of hand or trickery used by the goblin, he simply used extremely fast, difficult to follow movements to shuffle the cups around. Hence, the odds of guessing the correct cup are equal for any player to judge.

Doctor Doak also receives the following information: players with higher LCK have slightly improved odds of guessing the correct cup, One Eye'd Jack has improved odds of guessing the correct cup due to Heightened Awareness and Doctor Doak has massively improved odds of guessing the correct cup due to I Deduce and Hey, Cool!))

"Hmmm... Hm, fine. Third cup, then." Dixie replied, still with that same confidence she exuded a second ago.

The goblin lifts the third cup. There's no marble under it.

"You win some you lose some, miss. Wanna give it another go? Or someone else maybe, whole lotta twitchy fellas at the back there.

The goblin casually tosses one of the cups behind him, reducing the total to 4. He shuffles them much the same way he did previously and stops. He doesn't say anything this time, just looks at the party expectantly.

Burt steps out from the back of the group and looked at the weird goblin thing for a minute.

"Just play the damn game already, its not like its that hard of a thing to figure out."

Doctor Doak chuckles softly.

People can make a living off others betting on this game. It is quite spectacular the sleight of hand involved in this. Perhaps made more challenging by the addition of a mechanical man, which can move the way a human can’t.

Quite frankly, I am of the opinion we can’t win with the level of knowledge we currently have regarding the makeup of our metal friend or the table and cups with which he intends to play the game.

I deduce will likely play a significant part in all proceedings regarding the game.

"You'd like a crack at it now, eh? Let's see what you got then."

"It's in none of them. " Dixie interjected with confidence.

"That's the answer you wanna go with miss? If ya wrong, it'll count as a loss."

The ironclad slayer managed to get his head from the crutches of the bear momentarily. "I choose the middle one, number three ecause Im gonna rip you apart into in the middle and in three piec--"

The bear managed sit on him again.

The goblin looks bemused.

"I ain't actually started kneething yet, I thought allya talk first. Well then, here."

The goblin holds up a marble for all to see clearly. He slowly puts in under the middle cup. He then starts shuffling five cups around. Slowly at first, then gathering speed until his movements become a blur, too fast for all but the fastest of eyes to follow. He stops abruptly and squints at the downed, armored man.

"You the one picking again? Don't matter much to me, which one do you pick?"

!? Ah, so that's what's going on... This guy's just bored. Is it because he's bound here? But he doesn't really seem obligated to do this, if he'd let his game stoop that low to the point of being moot...

Dixie looked up, at the tower. Her eagerness to find out what's in there just rises. She glances at the table.

"... Let's play. "

"Aright looks like we're going places. So how allya wanna do this?"

The goblin looks at each party member in turn, taking an uncomfortable few seconds too long with the bear.

"I have a feeling I'll be here a while if I ask where the bear came from so Imma reserve the question. So, allya can pick one person among you to pick a cup. Or you can vote for the cup among yaselfs. Or howelse allya want it. Allya prolly wanna discuss this first, so do that and lemme know when you're ready. I'll be right here.

The goblin closes both his eyes, leans back and starts to snore.

"Can't you just let us pass through so we can free you from... whoever turned you into that? Are you enslaved or something? How much of your life has been wasted sitting here and waiting for people to play this inane mess? "

"Woah hey now, maybe you oughta take some pointers from that pretty oaf there. This game's all you need to know about, my tragic life history's too much for you to handle right now."

The goblin replies while banging a fist on the table, wheezing from uncontrollable chuckling fits.

A thought then struck Dixie.

" You're the one who tossed that other dwarf thereto, aren't you? "

"Hey, I'm just in charge of the gate here. I don't associate with no dwarfs, and no self-respecting dwarf is gonna associate with no goblin either, whether its the automated or the regular variety. You gonn have ask someone else about tossed dwarfs."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Linea stepped up. At a glance, this goblin automaton might be a trap set up by enemies, but it could be one of the two; either she was wrong or this enemy wanted to toy with them first before exploding his contraption right in front of their faces.

"Right, destroying you won't work, as you claimed. But I just want to let you know, the very thought of dismantling and finding some keys in your metallic gut repeatedly crossed my mind, and then we all will see if you are being honest or not. But I want to suspend that wish for now and instead, asking, what if we lose?"

"Hey hey woah, having your hands inside me might be too much for me to handle. What say you demonstrate the particulars to me somewhere in private, huh?"

The goblin leers at Linea and starts chuckling again.

"Ah, now there's a decent question. What indeed if you lose... Well, I'm a affable sorta guy. I don't like making pretty missuses like all ya lose, so if you lose, I'll simply have ya try again. And if you lose again, I'll have ya try again. I'm a good sport, I'll let you try as many times ya want. Heck, how about I make it easy on allya? I'll start with five cups. Only one cup will have a marble in it and you have to guess which one. If ya lose, I'll go down to four. If ya lose again, I'll go down to three. If ya luck still sore, I'll go down to one even. Heavens help allya if ya lose even then."

"Sooo, if we turn you into scrap metal, that gate still won't open?"

Dixie unsheaths the daggers on her waist again. "Is it not worth a shot?"

The goblin looks at her but says nothing.

MIND YA'OWN BUSINESS, YA RUSTY OL' BUCKET!! rasped the hobo back at the sassy tincan, before gently knocking the slayer on the metal of his helmet with his fist for attention.

Pipe down 'ere lad-- This goes a sideways, You' be getti' yer chance at 'im, now jus' be patient.

The goblin's metallic face locks onto an overly comical look of bemusement.

"Woah hey, which woodland critters you're privy to is your business. I don't say nothing now."

"Perhaps a riddle or some puzzle to proceed on the gate?" Laemmle spoke on the goblin statue. She approached it with non combat mode, yet her right arm is ready to pull her sword and her left arm is with the shield. Keeping aware from danger, ready to fight back.

The goblin starts nodding enthusiastically.

"Yes yes, you get it dontcha? Play the shell game, win, go through the gate to the inside. You're the brains of this group, I can tell."

The goblin nods sagely, failing at keeping his guffaws to himself.

A little disturbed by the goblin opening his head like a toolbox, Dixie sheathed her daggers and crossed her arms. "I was gonna ask how long you've been in here, but i guess that's bitta private as well, so instead... What's stopping us from torturing you and letting us pass without having to waste time on parlor games?"

The goblin sticks out his tongue, which is literally as sharp as a knife.

"Wowzers, you what they call a femme fatale? Lady I won't stop you from poking me all you want, I might even be into it."

The goblin claps his hand to his mouth to stifle a laugh.

"Seems you don't notice yet I'm made of metal? Blades don't hurt me, bullets don't hurt me, no magic you lot have don't hurt me and mean words might hurt me but it won't let you get pass the gate. The gate's the only way in, and you have to beat me for it. In this game, I don't mean beat me with your fists. I hope I make that part abundantly clear? A goblin automaton don't care much for torture and violence."

After hearing the goblin statue talk. The ironclad slayer wriggled even more, he would've escaped the bear if it was stationary but the bear adjusts to his movement.

"It toks? h hel om gan no kill it" he mumbled.

The goblin looks over to the pinned party member with a look of concern on his face.

"He don't look like he consented to me. You lot aright with this, poor man might be in some discomfort."

The goblin yawns loudly and starts humming a tune to himself.

Doctor Doak walks up next to GSH and places a hand on his shoulder.

If you don’t mind I’d like to take a more subtle approach. If it doesn’t work...” he glances back toward the rest of the group, “well, we’ll figure something out, I’m sure.

Doctor Doak then approaches the goblin statue.

Uh... good morning?

The goblin opens one of his eyes, gazes lazily at Doctor Doak for a moment, then closes it again.

"Seems closer to noon to me, donnit?"

The goblin lowers his feet to the ground and adopts a less casual sitting pose. He then opens both his eyes and gazes at the party with strangely expressive ball bearings in place of irises.

"And what are you supposed to be anyway, pointdexter? Hey woah wait, forget I asked, you got a whole menagerie with you? Lemme guess, travelling circus?"

Dixie approaches the statue as well, following Doak. Daggers unsheathed and held at her back, just in case it tries to attack their possibly frailest member.

"Well hello beautiful, ain't seen nothing so pretty for a full five days now. What do you do, juggle the clowns?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Maslarein looked on as Bear sat on Armoured Rival. He stared blankly for a second, as if trying to comprehend what he just saw, until he burst out in laughter.

HAHA! Well, you seem to be in quite the predicament, Friend! I would help you, but I am needed elsewhere!” Maslarein gave Armoured Comrade’s struggling body a thumbs up, his grin halfway between it’s usually infuriating cheerfulness and a more natural looking mirth. “I believe in your strength! Good Luck! HAHAHA!

Maslarein then ran to catch up with Dagger Girl (Dixie) and Smart Person (Dr. Doak), just in case they needed any help.

"Look like spring come early this year donnit? And they call my species horny maniacs. 'Tis been but a second and nonnya can restrain yourselfs in fronna a stranger like mineself. Not so much as an introduction or even 'hey what this here tower's doin' inna middle of the forest'. It's straight to bedtime busyness in the middle of the day."

The goblin lets out an exaggerated sigh and starts to strum the table.

"Kneeway, don't think we get far much with howdy do's and so forth, nonnya look like ya have enough marbles to fit a normal cranium between ya. So might be I'll lend you mine.

The goblin undoes a screw near his temple, opens the top of his skull like a door on its hinge, takes out several marbles and some cups, and closes his skull back after placing the cups on the table.

"Now I doubt you all wanna stand there gawking all day, but suit yourselfs. If anyall wanna play a game, step up."

The goblin places a marble under one of the cups, then starts switching the cup with several others back and forth with mechanical precision.

"Rules are simple, use your eyes to figure which cup the marbles under. Ya get it right, you can go inside."

The goblin thumbs at the closed gate behind him, the maw of a winged beast gawping at them.

"You can try scaling the wall, or breaking it down, sure. If you want to be magically cursed a dozen ways to Sunday that is. Beating me is the surefire way, aright? Any questions."

The goblin looks at the party with a worried look for a second, then corrects himself.

"No I don't mean questions like my mother's maiden name, or how big my nuts and bolts are. Show a goblin automaton some privacy. I mean like if ya get how to play this game, and that you all's can go inside the tower if you win aright?"
