"Stop firing that damned mortar so close to people, your doing just as much damage to us as they are."
Shoot Lockjaw 4 as many times as I can, and use my shield to protect myself if needed.

"Bori regret to say mortar shells not very obedient. Bori fire one way shell fly another way. Advanced ballistics, complicated subject."

Bori waits until his allies perform their actions, then takes out his revolver and fires at the closest lockjaw still standing.

"Unknown Soldier Comrade, Bori salutes you for saving Bori from being trapped."

Bori attempts to take cover behind a sandbag if possible, and launches a mortar attack at the 2 lockjaws to the north of him, hoping to catch both in the blast.

Jack raises an eyebrow at the obscene cost for a simple assessment, then remembers what her so called brother next door had to say.  His cheeks colored a bit, worried that Mama might pick up some on the conversation, or worse, some other signs might give it away should it actually work... For a moment, he contemplates which fate would be worse-- mama getting jealous with him for flirting, or being sent to debtors prison for a debt he cant pay.

After what seemed like an agonizing pause, he decides that mama was the better option.

What's a purdy thing like ye doin' chargin' prices like that? he asked wryly. Surely, ye could own t'is town, jus' wit' all the fine craftsmanship I see's 'ere--

He smiled and gave her a wink.

--Is only matched by the purdy face as makes it--

Flo stands there there stunned, not sure what to make of Jack's overtures. She relaxes and then sighs.

"Did my brother put you up to do this? You better not take any of his advice too seriously. Or get involved in his hare-brain schemes, unless you are aiming to lose your limbs and remaining eye."

Flo rubs her forehead with her fingers.

"I suppose you don't actually have that much gold on you. No reasonable person would shell out that much for a mere magic assessment anyway."

Flo looks close to breaking down, but somehow calms herself down and regains her composure.

"Well, the library and book issuance will always remain free-of-charge. If you have any further required services, I could bump the price down to something more manageable."

Oh uh... I'm Jack!  One-eyed Jack!  Sure-- I'll give it ago! Let me jus' tell mama the news firs'.

(you)Have a little(not a whole lot, but some.)
Maybe?(you can learn some small things?)
I try now.

Mama radiated confusion and bewilderment at the notion-- but a fair amount of amused interest. She nudged Jack to try.

Okay then! said jack, as he put his own hand on the circle, and gave Flo a nod. Let's see what we got 'ere mis Flo.

Flo recites the incantation once again, this time the runes on the page give birth to tiny specks of light. These floating orbs glow a calm, verdant green and proceed to spin erratically around the room bumping into shelves and walls. Flo makes a gesture with her hands and the orbs return to the page, ending the demonstration.

"Well, the results seem to talk for themselves. You seem to have an affinity with nature, right? Of course you can always focus your energies on any branch of magic that interests you, as anyone can, but might I recommend nature magic? There's different kinds, summoning tree spirits, shamanistic arts, druidic transmogrification, those sort of things, but you should start with the basics at least."

Flo retrieves another complete set of Elementary Nature Magic.

"You can peruse these as you like, and I can help out with any questions you have. Also-"

Flo halts, coughs and clears her throat.

"That'll be 200g."

"Well crap, I not going back to where I got this thing as that place was a death trap, and its not like I could get back inside sense the iron idiot killed the doorman, anyway thanks for the info I guess I'm gonna ask the librarian if she has a copy of the book I could copy the missing pages from."
With that Burt goes to the library which also turns out to be a magic store, with hopes to talk to the librarian.

((Note: The Folio are few loose papers, each folio is comprised of a few pages and are scattered around the world, not just in Wizard Tower as per last conversation.))

Flo turns around and greets the new customer.

"Hello sir, I'm Flo, are you here for a magical assessment too?"

Jack chuckled; It never ceased to amuse him how so many people completely misunderstood animals. Then again, he normally wouldn't invite a bear inside anyway-- The didnt tend to grasp the nuances of staying inside a permanent structure like this.

He looked at Mama with the smirk still on his face.

Paw Goes. (on the circle.)
I go?(First?)

She snuffed at him in consternation. She felt this was silly. He retorted that was all the more reason for her to go first. She fired back that it was his idea to stop here in the first place.

Don't you want? (To be able to do neat things too?)

(What things?) --she fired back.

Jack let her know that nature magic experts could do all kinds of things with living plants, like make them grow and bear fruit in seconds, among other things.  She took an interest, but expressed that if he could pick that up better, it would be one of the reasons she would keep him around for.

Jack twisted his wry smirk to one side and raised his eyebrow at her.

Just Do It. (We should try *together*!)

She huffed, waddled up to the desk, stood up on two legs (and nearly scared the chitin off the librarian), then plopped a paw right on the circle.

Good girl Mama!  Let's see ifn' ye got it in ya! Jack wheezed, before rubbing her on her back, and causing her to look over her shoulder at him.

The librarian looked very startled indeed.

((Jack rolls 7/20))

Mama places her paw on the circle, and Flo reluctantly recites the incantation, the runes on the page bathing the bear in a queer purple glow. After a few moments the glow recedes. Flo looks strangely relieved.

"I'm not surprised by this reaction. Animals generally don't have huge mana reserves, or capability to cast magic. It would be troublesome, since they generally rely on their instincts to predate and survive. If you add magic into the mix for creatures besides your magical ones, like unicorns and dragons, it would greatly damage the ecosystem. However..."

Flo's voice trails off a bit.

"I would be lying if I said this bear is completely ordinary. I head from another villager she was rescued from the animal attack the other day. It might be a result of the plant infection, or perhaps she was exposed to something else. It is highly improbable that she will be able to cast magic but, and this is a huge but, she has some innate magic strength and she may be able to harness it, somehow. Don't expect any answers from me now, I'll have to read up on it."

As she's saying this, she starts slinging books towards herself using strands of webs, flipping through the pages and reading them while engaging in conversation.

"Anyway, you want a go at it now mister... I didn't catch you name by the way. I'm Flo, Flo Roland. Perhaps you met my brother manning the desk out front, he's Vanquis Roland."

Jack felt he needed a small moment to let his face cool off, and decided a nice quick chat with Mama would do nicely.

She was extremely curious about why jack had been embarrassed by the man, so jack let on about how he had mentioned offering to help mama with anything magical she might want, and how he had handled it.  Mama was curious to know why Jack thought she might want a nice handsome bear, when she already had one with her right there.

So much for getting the cheeks to cool down.

Jack changed the subject-- He felt that if they were going to deal with all these trials and problems together, they should get tested together too. In the off chance that she had any magical potential as well, he would help her in any way he possibly could to help her develop it too. She thought he was extremely silly, thinking she could do any of the fireball tossing, body dissecting, purple energy bolting, and other absurd stuff the 2 legged things had been up to-- but if it would help him feel more at ease, she'd get tested too.

That made him smile.  Timidly, he approached the desk, and politely cleared his throat at the "librarian."  He was a bit at a loss for words, after seeing her from the waist down as he approached the desk enough to look over it--- Curiosity about how such a woman could exist flashed through his mind, but he was entirely too polite to ask.

Pardon me Ma'am-- he said politely, trying to gain her attention. Sign out front says ya does magical aptitude testin'?  --... Me and Mama's here to see if we gots any chance at it. Wit' what's workin' out dere, we needs all the edge we can git.

"Hello! Welcome to the aaaaaah!"

Flo turns around and gives a tiny shriek as she sees the bear next to Jack.

"I-I-I-I'm sorry, I didn't expect to see a bear inside, w-w-we don't usually let animals inside the library but as long as uh, what did you call her? Mama? She doesn't mess up the books..."

Flo trails off for a few seconds, leading to an awkward silence, then quickly recovers.

"Yup yup, an aptitude test won't be a problem, one of your companions just went underwent one of the tests. Would you like to determine the depths of your magical reserves, or have some element in mind that you desire mastery over? We do other things here too but for starters let's start with this."

Flo took out the book she used previously and opened the magic circle spread.

"You will have to place your hand here, this will just let us know whether you have any magic capabilities to begin with. Most people do have some sort of affinity but it's better to make sure still."

Adjourn to his room (assuming he has one) at the inn, read the books and take copious notes.

Doctor Doak retires to his room.

What would mama want with magic? She' more intrested in just doin' normal bear type things ya know? said jack, with his cheeks starting to color involuntarily.  Ya know-- Find a good boy bear, eat lots a food, then go den up fer 'te winter and such... Jack's face was practically beet red at the end of that last sentence.

Naow-- I'mma go see about 'at dere assessement!

And with that, the red-faced gentleman absconded into the next room, Mama trailing behind him with a very confused look on her face.

One Eye'd Jack finds himself in the library where the librarian Flo is adjusting books in the shelves. She's engrossed in her work and doesn't notice him coming in.

"Bori is pinned beneath this barricade. Bori will sing sad song as Bori's blood leave Bori's guts."

Bori will attempt to free himself from the barricade and move away from danger if possible, while whistling mournful tunes to invoke sorrow in his comrades.

Jack grinned wryly at the absurdly dressed gentleman, as he took the "trigger device" back.

Oh-- Ya mean mama?  Mama's 'er own thang-- but right purdy.  She won't hurt nobody, 'slong as they don' go messin' round wid' 'er, thinkin' she' a dog or sommat. She think' all the peoples 'round 'ere is crazy, and dont really wan' none 'o it. Cain't say I blame er-- Poor thang caint go back in da woods, what wid' em all full a critters as just assume eat ya face as say 'ello and all.

Jack's expression made a flash towards tender concern, worry, and doubt, before being forced back into being cheerful and bright again.

Bu' 'ats why we're 'ere, ain't it? Gotta make ev'r'thang better-- en mebbe poor place can starts ta heal... His face slipped back into solemn worry and doubt again, this time not really getting pushed back. ...Afore ev'r'thang innit dies anyway...... So-- Assessments! Ya says it only takes a minit?

"Suuuure does, that's the easy part. Learning's the hard part. Some folks are inclined towards this magic or that, on account of their circumstance of birth and whatnot. Location, species, what have you. But most just pick and focus energies on what they like. Not every elf is communing with mystic trees, they can take up flame and fire as well as any dragon mage."

"Well anyway, if I can be any further help to you, or MAMA!"

He shouts several pitches to loud, putting his best salesmen grin on while looking at the bear.

"Just ask for me, I'll be right here. Or err, wherever you hear any explosions in the village."

"Wait its missing pages, damn I thought I found all of them do you have any idea of how many are missing?"
Burt asks the question.

"Umm, I'm not sure if this follows Wirkwahl's Classification of Natural Fauna... or maybe some other categories of plant material. I think five is a safe bet. Alchemy, Fruits, Roots, Twine (Fiber) and Molds. We have two, Alchemy and Fruits, so there should be three more pages of this same construction out there, somewhere."

Jack cracked a smirk, then hauled the broken brass contraption he had ripped from the tower floor out of his bag.

Allrighty-- Mebby ya can have a looksie at dis crazay thang--- he said as he laid the broken device on the counter.
Got some missin' parts, but t'e udders like it 'bout mowed us all daown in some damned darkened room-- (batshit crazy assed place; fallin down and tryin' te kill us lef' an right...) Shot big o' purple death beams and such at us.  Could be a fun trinket ta have 'round--- Or, is just purdy scrap, yer call....

The shopkeeper takes the broken trigger device from Jack, twirling it between his graceful fingers and examining it closely.

"Ah yes yes, broken trigger looks like? Better than any I've made for suuuure, wonder what happens if I..."

The shopkeeper fiddles with it for a few moment, occasionally infusing it with magic, glowing with different colors each time.

"That's fixed then, the trigger was broken, and I fixed it now. It shouldn't explode in your face for the next few days at least. You need a magic source to channel through here, looks like the original held an orb. Purple death beams you say, very well, er very well. I can't do purple death beams just yet but maybe, maybe if you got some other magic instrument... or maybe crystals or something, you can still power this thing and fire something out of it uh. I had one that could fire ropes, right handy to swing from trees and stuff you know, I planned on making a swing for the village kids but the rope caught fire. Unpredictable stuff, magic. Still, no harm will come to you for sure, if you got any ideas come to me alright, I'm mighty good with magic.

The shopkeeper hands the fixed Orb Trigger back to Jack.

Ya really does magical apt'tude testin' 'ere? I gots work still needs a doin', but I gots a few moments-- How long does it take?

"Aptitude check right, excellent excellent. She'll be pleased, might even stop badgering me for the rest of the year. Oh it takes but hardly a moment. She might not even extort you of your inheritance if you flatter her enough. You can learn spells and stuff as well, I'd help you with that but my genius needs tempering daily, far too busy. You will have to go to the other side of this building, the library door opens there. She's already ministering to one of your companions. And how about you, er, how about the bear?"

The shopkeeper looks back and forth between Jack and the bear.

Gruffly, keeping the guttural growl to a dull moan, deep in the way someone affecting their volume is. You are, in a direction opposite to most.

"2g sounds good to me, and if your running out of metal I'll be sure to grab any I find when we go back out, now I've got to go to the apothecarist before I forget."
Burt exchanged the metal for the money, then went to the apothecarist to see what they thought of the fruit book.

Burt takes the Fruit Folio to the apothecarist, who brings out a peculiar lens-shaped crystal to observe it.

"This is an exquisite piece of workmanship. Most of these fruits listed on this page are real I'm sure, as difficult as it may be to believe. I've dealt with many of them myself but they're supposed to be rare."

The apothecarist puts down the crystal and ponders for a moment.

"Whoever had this must have been a person of considerable means. I can also make out some kind of enchantment weaved into it but I cannot determine what sort. Also, it's just a hunch but I think there must be more pages to this folio. I have one like this, but it's for plant ingredients used in alchemy. If the folio has a greater purpose you will need to find more pieces to determine what it does."

"Also, the librarian can do magical analysis of objects (and people as well but there's a greater cost to that), maybe she can notice something I cannot."

Doctor Doak sighs quietly, glad the ordeal is over.

If you give me as many books on nature magic as you think would help me understand it, sure, I’ll tell all my friends about you and your library.

Doctor Doak gains updated editions of all nature magic books he was carrying. The originals are shelved away and can be retrieved again if desired.

Crossing the town square, he noticed that a sign was out front on a previously closed building. "Magic Shoppe" huh...

His interest was piqued, he had a few minutes.  He nuzzled and stroked mama a bit, then opened the door and went inside.

The shopkeeper looks up and stares at the customer (or customers?) that walked inside. As soon as One Eye'd Jack approaches the counter his eyes light up.

"WELCOME TO- *ahem* I mean, welcome to the shop sirs."

The shopkeeper throws a hopeful glance towards the bear as well.

"How could I help you, it's MAGIC right? You're here for some arcane wares right, we got the best, we got the best stuff in this village, we're- oh the stock got cleared out a bit recently but don't worry, I'm sure whatever remains will serve your needs fine!"

The shopkeeper bounces on the soles of his feet excitedly, waiting for a reply.

Doctor Doak sighs and places his hand on the fancy large circle. The sooner this was over the sooner he could get back to doing something useful.

"Excellent!"

Flo leaps with glee and quickly starts incanting. The library around Doctor Doak becomes dim and muted, while the glyph he placed his hand on glows q vivid blue blue and after a few moments emits brilliant beams of light, almost blinding him.

They flash in intensity for a minute, before dying down leaving everything as it was before.

"The results could not be clearer! You have innate reserves of energy (or something analogous to that) in ample amount and you could certainly manifest it in magical form. You see, not all species draw on magic the same way, or manipulate those energies the same way. In fact, you could even say magic is a catch-all term, as some forms of magical arts don't even have anything in common with each other, and-"

Flo drones on endlessly about various ways magic can be drawn and used, occasionally pulling a book towards her and flipping through pages, oblivious to everything going around her.

She suddenly looks up from a book and around her with a panicked expression, half-expecting the library to be empty but appears relieved to see Doctor Doak still standing there.

"Ah, most people usually bail by now. I usually charge 100 gold for my consultation services, but in lieu of that payment I urge you recommend the library to the rest of your friends... er, the other adventurers? Are they your friends perhaps? It doesn't matter, everyone needs magic don't they."

Flo gathers some web and uses them to slinging the books she had previously collected back to their places on the shelves.

"You too perhaps, you can decide which sort of magic you'd like to pursue. Maybe the books here can help you make up your mind."
