DF Gameplay Questions / Milking
« on: March 10, 2008, 12:04:00 pm »
I've got cows, I've got a farmers workshop, I've got a dwarf set to milk things, I've got buckets.  Why does it tell me I need a milkable animal to do it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Why do elves hate trading
« on: March 10, 2008, 11:56:00 am »
I was trading with some elves, I offered them a bunch of stuff, it was a good deal, and when I go to trade, I get a message saying "I must truly hate life, I should show you how they suffered".  I don't get it, what did I do wrong?  Do Elves take offense at things made of bone (not having gems I started decorating stuff with bone).

If you saved the seed number you can regenerate the same world.  If it's a normal sized world though, good like finding your site.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Windmills and magma pump array
« on: June 13, 2008, 02:33:00 am »
I got a partial success from this.  The Resevoir is far too small for what I'm doing, so later I'm both going to test flooding the z-level the with more lava, and I'm also going to consider just expanding the reservoir.

The Lava filled up the first part of the corridor pretty quick.  It ran out of lava on the top z-level before the lava filled the delivery tube, which I think I left a tad long.

This is giving me grand ideas.  If the magma pipe doesn't take long to refill, I'm thinking of whipping up maybe 15 or 20 of these in an array, and have maybe two or three output spots (if I'm right, the amount of lava your getting from your array will simply be divided by the number of outputs it has in it).

If there's something I'm still overlooking here, and the system won't work for any reason, it'll still be capable of filling a sealed tube with lava, which you can then dump on enemies that show up and let the pumps refill it.

I'm curious as to whether the design will work at all.  I'm concerned that once the lava has filled a few squares of the closed system it'll consider it blocked and stop pumping the magma.  I'm also worried that I might not be able to supply the pumps with a sufficient supply.  If it's a supply problem, I'll be able to flood the access area I built, since the pumps area all magma safe materials, and that should allow me two z levels worth of lava to work with, rather than one.  That's assuming as well that the pumps will operate at all when completely submerged with lava.

The reservoir is three quarters full.  Nearly there.

I already did the windmills.  It's a mess but it works.  Now I'm just waiting for the lava reservoir to fill so it'll start pumping.  Why did I make the thing so deep, while the pumps can only skim off the top level.

DF Gameplay Questions / Windmills and magma pump array
« on: June 12, 2008, 02:33:00 pm »
I'm whipping up a bitchin Magma pump array that I hope will pump magma out at a tremendous rate (it's four pumps hooked up to tunnels that connect after a short distance.  I didn't think out the power setup though, and since I want the ability to shut down the pumps rather than just seal the tunnel with a floodgate. The problem is, I'm thinking about the power setup and I'm seeing that the array is going to contain hanging gears and axles to make the whole situation work.  I don't want it to collapse the second I hit the switch.

I've got shafts tunneled down but they are only separated by one space.  No room to place the windmills directly over them.  I also don't know how splash back is going to affect things.  I plan on pretty thoroughly sealing the pumps in and hope to avoid placing mechanisms next to them.  The only thing I can think of that would help is to have a line with the mechanisms over shafts, and have an entire array of windmills off to the sides, with mechanisms that can be shut off  there.  It would be inefficient.

I also need to know how to seal the Pumps.  Should I build walls on the sides of the pump?  Maybe behind it too, to prevent splashback.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lack of Sand, Civs
« on: June 11, 2008, 12:32:00 am »
If you don't mind cheating, go into the raw\objects folder and go into the matgloss_stone_soil.txt file.  Find the type of soil that matches the sedimentary layer where you embarked, and add [SOIL_SAND] to its entry.  Suddenly all exposed squares of that are sand (the graphics will even change).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Infinite sources of water
« on: June 11, 2008, 12:42:00 am »
So how would you harness a U-bend?  Seal it off and have a resevoir, as well as gate at the bottom to drain it, so you can safely access it?  I'm going to have to build one now.  I think I'll make a completely artificial pipe and tank.  The whole thing will be aboveground.

Does the water appear instantly, or does it just gush out very quickly?  How long does it take to cover the map?

I read somewhere that if you have multiple screw pumps with water source that feed into each other, that you'll get more water coming out than going in.  Lately I've read all the wiki articles on screw pumps and water physics but cannot find even a mention.  Can someone confirm or deny this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Laptop keyboard layout
« on: April 15, 2008, 09:54:00 pm »
I have a laptop I want to play DF on, but it lacks a keypad, crippling the DF interface.  I'm going to try to remap the keys, but I was hoping to get advice from anyone who's done the same.

Does anyone know if I remap keys that normally do things to lets say number keys, do they appear that way in the DF interface?

DF Gameplay Questions / Keeping armor equipped
« on: June 03, 2008, 12:08:00 pm »
I have one particularly useful dwarf, whom I'd like to wander about in armor at all times.  I know hunting will keep them outfitted even when they aren't actually hunting, but I can't have her running off to kill every hoary marmot and mountain goat that wanders through.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves not using bins
« on: June 04, 2008, 02:07:00 am »
I tried to recreate a stockpile for bars and they still won't use any bins.  I also created a second cloth pile which has yet to add any bins, but the first cloth stockpile added a few (it's still not at capacity while there is cloth and thread sitting in nearby workshops.)
