DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My Second Evil Embark.
« on: February 18, 2022, 11:07:49 pm »
Welcome to SkinVault.

Embarked on the edge of an evil mountain and am loosely modeling my fortress after the Shadow Temple from OOT to fit the theme. One year has passed and issues so far have been zombie yaks, mountain goats, and dark gnome body parts that refuse to stay f****** dead. My lone sword dwarf did good against the undead at first, but was soon trampled by 5 yaks. The caravan is acting strangely, most of them got spooked away by the dark gnomes but a few of the caravan guards have stuck around for some reason. I'm not going to question it, getting free guards with steel equipment at my fortress entrance is a godsend at this stage. Attempting to form a militia but equipment is scarce and combat skills more so. The miners are pulling double duty as warriors, Two "militia" dwarfs were hospitalized by goats. There are blighted clouds that roll in from time to time; I don't know what they do yet and don't really want to know...
I made the mistake of assuming reanimating effects only occur on the surface and now have yak skins crawling around my kitchens. Now thinking how best to make due without butchers. At least this place doesn't rain acid.

Overall the year has not been terrible, but not very good either.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Struggling with undead invaders
« on: February 14, 2022, 10:04:14 am »
Spears and blunt weapons are very ineffective against undead since they don't bleed and aren't affected by organ damage so they'll never bleed out or suffocate. They can only be killed by beheading or bisection. Headshots with spears and blunt weapons can still kill them "...tearing the brain!" "...explodes into gore!" but are less efficient than hacking them to pieces in my experience so axes and swords are your best bet.
Also worth mentioning that Undead sieges are OP and pretty much always have been, I wouldn't recommend fighting them in an open battle at all and to cheese them with traps instead. Military dwarves can fight maybe 1.5 their numbers of undead at most and if necromancers are around they'll need to be killed first since they'll just revive zombies over and over again then revive your dead military dwarves with their Legendary combat skills intact.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So I embarked on top of a dragon...
« on: August 02, 2020, 06:17:17 pm »
Or more aptly, under a dragon. I unknowingly embarked on a cave site and the dragon who lived there was honest to god standing right on top of the wagon as soon as the game started. Of all the luck huh? My lone sword dwarf was able to reach his equipment but it didn't help much. Total unpaused game time couldn't have been more than 5-10 seconds. Easily my worst embark ever, and far worse than that time i embarked in an evil biome which constantly rained Acrid Mucus that dissolved every living thing it touched.

Losing is fun.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hilarious Fortress destruction.
« on: July 10, 2020, 10:02:44 pm »
Thought I would share how one of my recent forts was destroyed. The fortress of Bookfountain, the name was selected by me as I was wanting to construct a great library. One of the visitors to my tavern was an "Ettin Void Slayer". Yes, an intelligent undead Ettin. An oh s*** moment for sure. Then I noticed he ignored other Dwarves and the Human merchants camped outside and I thought "Hey, maybe this guy won't be so bad". There wasn't much I could have done otherwise anyway, he would have just parked himself at the maps edge forever had I locked the door. So I let him in. His friendliness was all a ruse of course. He promptly went on a killing spree that my 5 military dwarves were powerless to stop due to him being basically invincible. To make matters worse, i had recently retired a human necromancer adventurer at this same fort. Cue 60+ dead dwarves being all raised as "Cursed Ones" only to be struck down again. And again, and again. Finally, to top off the chaos, a vampire took advantage of the confusion to suck a bone carver dry. Had to abandon it because this would probably have gone on forever otherwise.

Scriver also posted something like this but I thought I would add my two cents. So I decided to make a large party of 10 adventures with mounts (coinciding with the max unit size in dwarf mode). Thinking we were going to go on a big adventure. Not so, within the first two days of setting off, 7 of my party members had killed each other. They had seemingly all gotten into "violent disagreements", i did notice that my two morally questionable "antihero" members were the first to be killed off, implying its a personality incompatibility thing. They would even attack the mounts for no apparent reason, then others would join in. They would spit at one another over having killed each other and it just resulted in one loyalty cascade after another. In the end, I was stuck as single party member even though two others were left alive. They had both "concluded the agreement" and so I wasn't even able to tab over to them. I convinced one to follow me, but then he only acted as a normal follower and I couldn't play as him. So ya, party support seems kinda buggy at the moment. Maybe im pushing the limit of what Toady intended with this but idk.

Also, Mounts seem to have a mind of their own, when riding into battle I seem to have issues with killing one enemy and then having my horse run uncontrollably in the other direction out of fear, they also seem to wander around randomly at times which may be affected by the new Rider skill. Im considering adding the NOFEAR and CANOPENDOORS tags to certain animals.
