DF Gameplay Questions / Magma and deep water

Hi, I'm new here. I have a question about magma and what happens if you drop it into water deeper than one z-level. I've got the hang of magma and pumps in my current fortress and I was thinking about what can be done with it- If I pump magma out above the ocean and then release it with a floor hatch or something, will it turn into a normal wall of obsidian on the surface and then cave-in to the ocean floor? I understand magma + water = obsidian but I've never seen it done with more than a channel of the stuff.
