If a dwarf wears iron gauntlets, are his punches more powerful?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Ghosts grow up!
« on: March 31, 2011, 11:38:36 am »
That gives me an idea for a suggestion.. if you managed to keep a dwarf alive long enough that they die of old age, they could come back as a 'peaceful' ghost, having lived a long life free of painful or violent death. Their 'hauntings' would give happy thoughts as they would comfort relatives or troubled dwarves. Though it wouldn't make much sense if they came back because of improper burial. They oughta still get mad about that.

Still, dwarves very rarely live long enough to die of old age, so a benevolent ghost would still be special enough. There are enough stories out there with mystical but helpful spirits lending a hand to the living from beyond the grave that it would be a reasonable addition to DF.

To stay slightly on-topic though, ghosts shouldn't really be able to age at all once they shed their mortal coil. So it's a good thing that it's on the bug tracker.

Yeah that would  be cool. Not a constant haunting, but a rare "appearance" to a relative or friend, that last for a few seconds and then it disappears.

"Urist McGhost has materialized!"
"Urist McGhost has disappeared."

"Was happy to see the ghost of his *father, son, friend, mother etc etc* lately"

Or

"Was unhappy to see the ghost of his grudge lately"

Did he wear any armor? He might have been hit by a poison dart, causing him to faint/go dizzy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Defending marksdwarves?

My marksdwarves are equipped with steel chain. When they get hit with silver bolts however, they don't penetrate, but the weight of the silver causes blunt fractures which I think is kinda silly, it's just an arrow.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Military training
« on: March 29, 2011, 03:47:12 pm »
So, as I am quite new, i have a few questions. xD again.. xD

This time, it`s about the military... again. xD
Only, it`s about training. :) So, How do i know that they are actually training? it`s training months ( 2 months on, 2 months off ) And all they do is stand there in the barracks. Do they actually train? And another thing, 2 of my dwarven soldiers aren`t even IN the barracks! xD How come?

And one last thing: I sent my marksdwarves ( 2 of them ) to hunt down some annoying animals that spammed me down with " *Someone* has cancelled drink : Interrupted by: " but, they don`t shoot any bolts! :( I have been in the military screen to apply som ammunition, but they don`t seem to use it. the same with training. I have set up some archery range, and given my dwarves some wooden bolts for training. also, i cannot enable or disable "use in training" or "use in combat" -.- oh, the confusion...

Do the archers have quivers to store their bolts in?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Setting up a Tetrahedrite military.

How effective is layering copper, leather and cloth?

Let's say the upper body has 1 copper breastplate, 1 copper mail shirt, 1 leather armor and 2 layers of cloth. How effective is it, let's say when compared to just an iron mail shirt?

Copper spears. They can get through better armor, unlike copper axes or swords etc. If you have only copper, spears is definitely what I'd use.

How can I make the goblins equip better armor? It's no fun when all of them wear leather, copper with a couple of small iron pieces.

My count constantly demands helmet snake tooth items. Thinking of causing an unfortunate accident.

One of my dwarves, called Psychognome Lordwheel (custom first name), got a special name from all the stuff he has killed (he's one of my elite soldiers).

Psychognome Lordwheel, the Vision of Dying

Awesome.

Vanilla DF, silver warhammers are the deadliest against humanoids as proven by testing (says on the DF wiki).

Generally though, battle axes or short swords are the best choices in my opinion. Hammers don't work as well against stuff like bronze colossi or any blob creatures.

I liked the old system better.

Old system: a little of everything on most embarks

New system: Either an absolute buttload of 1-3 random metals, or absolutely nothing at all.

When I unleashed a barrage of adamantine bolts upon siegers only to find out they bounce off clothing thanks being so ridiculously light.
