No rooms. This seems to be the biggest key to it. The happy thoughts from their own bed are usually enough to tip the balance for me.

And, goblins that were on the bridge when you raised it would also be dropped right into the heart of your fort...

Yeah. problem was that aluminum isn't really good for use a blade, its too ductile, and while its strength to weight ratio is high, its also very light: you'd need a greater volume for an equivalent amount of strength of steel (still true today)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: sooo... does magma melt rock doors?
« on: February 08, 2009, 05:30:05 am »
Yes, but magma doesn't self ignite things that are a few meters away from it. The wonderful fact that air has a low thermal conductivity and circulate helps with that. Or, well, at least with lava.

Correct.

Now that i think of it, there's a series of maps on the DFMA where someone has done this (collapsing sheets of obsidian in at a time, i think). i'll try dig it up.

Edit: here it is

Can't say i've ever seen a dwarf wear more than a set of plate+chain jacket. Will have to do more experimenting now :)

Yes, i have a couple of techniques that i've always thought of for constructing underwater forts.

One of them is to drop "sheets" of magma down all at once. Do this by creating a holding chamber the same size as the area you want to create the obsidian on, with walls around a floor made of bridges. hook all bridges to a level, and pull all at once. Hopefully you have a falling sheet of lava (though i don't think this'll work).

The other method i was thinking of was simply casting the entire block  (x*y*z tiles) above the ocean, removing the constructions, connecting it to a support and then dropping it into place.

In my latest fort i've gone with a different approach: trying to get every dwarf to have a single profession, and starting from the begging.

So, i had every single dwarf a Armour user/shield user/novice weapon user and as well as those:
1 proficient mechanic
1 proficient Building designer
1 proficient grower
1 proficient cook
1 proficient brewer
1 proficient stonecrafter
1 proficient carpenter

Mad the carpenter chop wood and the building designer do masonry until a replacement migrant came.

I never start without a proficient mechanic, because i find that they are slow to train, and it is really really useful having a dedicated one, since i always find myself doing a lot of water projects.

I got lucky with this fort though, migrant armoursmith and weaponsmith both went fey during the second year.

Edit, wait, no... That's not the map i remember, that's just one i found searching for map in POI titles.

This is the map i remember

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Will DF ever be as dangerous as the 2d era?
« on: February 06, 2009, 05:48:17 am »
Skeletal mountain goats. Those are bad enough, but then there's the skeletal giant eagle over the hill. At least it was a moutain/badlands biome so there was no need to go outside anyway.

Then there was this time i started on a terrifying or something desert, that had just a few trees. Sent my woodcutter out to cut wood, with both the dogs trained and following him. get the message "war dog has been struck down", zoom over and a nightwing has just killed it and is killing the second. got my dwarf out of there pronto, and locked down my fort straight away.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your favourite WATER feature?
« on: February 06, 2009, 05:38:19 am »
The flows don't have any notion of velocity per se, so no.  Fountains will just kind of burble outwards.  Water flowing sideways MIGHT go further out than one tile, but only if there's so much of it that it can't all fit in the first tile.  It certainly won't form a nice parabolic waterfall.

I've found that it actually does, though that might just be due to a surge of the pumps starting up, and i only found this horizontally, not vertically.
