It's quite irritating. I know what Toady was going for but damn, a lone woodcutter toiling in the forest shouldn't turn the place into a desert

Remember that the tile the tree was on will turn into a sand/soil one.

You'd find embark anywhere on the DF file Depot, link for that is on the wiki. I'd only bother using it for the final 7 though, it might mess with the while respawning of monsters thing...

.rar is just a form of compression like .zip.

I use winrar for it, as it does .zip files too :)

The weird aquifers that you get near waterfalls. Sure, dig down a bit upstream from them and its fine. Rebuild a grander entrance way closer to the falls, 'oh, there's an aquifer'. Even more painful when you dig upwards into them. Flooded my entire (new) entrance hall.

I was getting that message with my 200+ pop fort, figured it might have something to do with pop cap.

I'd assume that the death of the duke would count count for a lot. (eg, equivalent to the death of many regular dwarves).
