DF General Discussion / Re: Gem encrusted magma
« on: January 02, 2023, 07:34:38 am »
Oh. I have some of those in the third cavern layer. They are a lot bigger and filled with both water and magma with lots of gems inside, going deep down into the magma sea. I was hoping for some enemies inside but none so far.

Lucky you

So… what we’re dealing with is a band of traveling monastery builders?

A band of 7 monastery builders by any chance? Prone to self extinguishing bouts of tantrum spirals? Maybe not just one band, many singular bands...

It'll be interesting to see how Tarn adapts to another developer. Just onboarding, knowledge transfer can take time and putting in place good version control and common builds practices... Should produce some good stories of they're up for sharing. These are of course challenges faced by other developers, myself included...

Me lying in bed on holiday wondering how many file ids can be identified by web scraping for dffd links+targeted Google search while not having the tools to hand to actually attempt this...

The breaking changes mentioned were the save restructure and something about trees. Given there are four seeds it sounds like the first seed might be broken, but the others might generate intact. Depending at what stage the trees use the seed (I'm imagining later in the generation process) you might still end up with a world that looks geographically the same but has different forests, or maybe the forest locations are the same but when you enter the region the trees themselves might look different.

I know you've said there won't be save game backward compatibility in the Steam release from previous versions, but will the various world gen seeds still produce the same worlds, terrain, civs, etc?

I guess if the interface changes reduce the number of key presses overall, I'd be happy to relearn all those triple+ key presses I have to repeat endlessly.

I've been thinking about mods in terms of source control, e.g. git. Essentially the same issues apply as for applying two or more patches (changes) from separate branches (mods) back to the develop/master branch (vanilla), each of which may overlap in several areas of code (raws). Even git is only so good, too much overlap and it gives up and returns the merge conflict back to the user to fix. This is a problem for which a complete solution didn't exist yet.

So yeah, loading mods in order isn't quite sufficient, although maybe having some kind of priority for resolving conflicts would be helpful, and having several stages for applying parts of mods would be helpful in standardising what changes can be applied, e.g. add new objects, delete existing objects, apply blanket changes to sets of objects...

If I was going to play DF this way I'd attach a full usb keyboard to my android tablet.

DF Suggestions / Re: Allow children to read books

Ah the Roundworld series, subdivided as it is into several themes. The necromancer who can't raise the dead because the biggest secret of life and death squeezed out all the other spells, who is followed around by a chest of the finest craftdwarfship decorated with animated feet of its defeated foes. The city watch, including the sheriff who marries a dragon trainer, a dwarf who thinks he's a human who is actually the king, a dwarf who cross dresses as an elf, and a troll hammerer. The three female necromancers, one of whom ai'nt dead and can defeat any enemy by staring at them and making them feel sorry, one who dreams of raising a family and that dream was realised many many times, and has a cat with more kills than any other entity, and one who accidentally became Queen after marrying a performer who turned out to be the King's son. But the best is a one off story about a dwarf prophet and his pet tortoise.

All dwarf children should be sent down to work the mines.

DF Suggestions / Re: make visitors not come or leave during sieges

But it is also funny when an intelligent undead spearmaster takes on the entire invasion force and wins.

Also I had a hydra arrive during a siege, who tried to fight a visiting undead scholar who was leaving the map, but the guy kept waving his hands and causing the hydra to throw up from each of its seven heads in turn. He eventually beat the hydra to death with his hands without taking a single scratch, all while 280 invaders were trying to get in my fortress (unsuccessfully).
