DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to appoint a priest?
« on: October 17, 2020, 09:32:18 am »
Thanks for the responses. Back to this kinda late, got away from the game a bit.

I've been trying all along to appoint a priest just like you guys said. Only thing available to appoint seems to be an unlimited amount of performers. There are around 15-20 members of the religion in my fort. All of them are either original 7 or subsequent migrants (so citizens right?).  Still no option to appoint a priest that I see.

But if I don't get complaints, I don't much care. Unless a holy war develops (guessing a definite possibility in this game heh) messing with the temples and religion isn't where I care to focus anyway. Just trying to keep my peeps happy.

In fact, in MOST historical sword battles (before guns), only 10% of an army would die before the army would run off.

War casualties back then were actually quite high.  But most were from infections after battles (a minor wound today was often fatal in the long run then), and disease (thousands of men all shitting in their water, then wondering why they got sick).

They were a lot more than sword battles though, but I get your point.

DF Gameplay Questions / How to appoint a priest?

I'm on my third petition for a temple with a priest. I have my first temple built, the value raised well above 2k (it is confirmed as a temple) 5 instruments in a glass box, and 5 performers set. No idea if that's strictly necessary, but figured 5 instruments need 5 performers. But I can't see a way to appoint a priest.

Little worried I'm going to have a lot of pissed off parishioners from the three different sects if I can't find a way to get them their damn priests.

Cool, thanks.

Actually tried out Vettlinger since, and really digging it now heh. They're both quite nice though. Vettlinger feels a little cleaner to look at for me.

Just found this on the wiki page for quotes from the game.

"Kara Mase, the Glory of Amusing: Engraved on the wall is an image of a dwarf and an elf. The dwarf is committing a depraved act on the elf."

That whole page is hilarious btw. And proof all by it's lonesome that this is the coolest game ever made.

I really dig the Meph+Vordak tile pack.

But I'm curious, why is it labeled (lite)? And does that mean there is an even better full version out there somewhere?

DF is best when it stays true to its setting and point of view, rather than trying to reflect modern sensibilities. It should not be a game about sex.

I ducked out for a bit, but didn't quite expect all this. On retrospect, I probably should have though.

How would it make the game more about sex than it already is?

I'm not talking about adding some graphic depiction of coupling that's not in the game now. I'm talking about finding out the expedition leaders wife has been sneaking around with that visiting elf, or a female human warrior fell in love with the dwarfs militia leader and decides to stay in your fort. Along with the fallout of disapproval or whatever that comes with all that.

I would expect it would all be quite rare in any case. In a decent size fort, maybe once every several years at most. Mainly cause Dwarfs are rather conservative types, and disapproval should be strong.

My side not about Glen Cook's, Garrett Files also having all species combinations able to reproduce wasn't really my point either. I just kind of muddied my own waters there.  All unions could be unable to breed, and it could still raise some interesting situations

I do get that it would probably be quite a lot of work coding-wise, and if I were to set Toady's priorities for him (we should probably all thank God I don't) this wouldn't be very high on the list.

I'm aware. Hence the suggestion :).

There is a Threetoe story about a half-elf/half-goblin and her parents, though I doubt the latter's relationship was ever described in that way. But you have a point. Elves (and other fantasy beings) are often described as alluringly beautiful, even to members of other species, and that is a case of cross-species proclivities, just a case not bound to individuals. Being such a common trope, it would be a shame if it didn't make it in. It would technically add some realism too, as IRL humans do definitely not restrict themselves to what is 100% human.

Also I find it really funny. +1

To me there is no question whatsoever that in a fantasy world that stuff would happen all the damn time heh. Hell, I'd probably be getting busy cross species myself, if our world was a fantasy one.

If you haven't, check out Glen Cook's Garrett PI books sometime. He hits the nail on the head about that stuff, like he does with so much other realism in his fantasy. The majority of non-human emigrants in Tun-Fare (sp?) are described as "breeds" (usually in a derogatory manner by the human rights types). Breeds are mixed breeds, because every single sentient creature in that world can cross breed with all the others. Well assuming the sized differences work enough to make that possible. There's three part gnoll part giant characters who claim to be triplet brothers from three different mothers (don't ask, even they don't know how that worked).

Those and his Black Company books have to be the most realistic (in the sense of peoples motivations, actions, ways of speaking etc) fantasy ever put on paper.

Not to mention the Black Company books are hands down the best fantasy ever written.

Cool, thanks.

Actually just now getting around to reading the DFHack documentation and realizing just how much useful stuff is in there.  Thinking if I can figure out how to use it right, I'll remove about 80% of the functional dysfunction frustration from the game.

I just might finally get into as much as I've really wanted to, trying ever so often and failing to fully immerse, off and on for over 10 years now. lol.

I'll just wait for it to come out. Unless it's really changed a lot, highly possible considering the length of time since I last played and this communities dedication to such things, I wouldn't use it while playing anyway.

Thanks though. It's good to know I shouldn't waste anymore time trying to figure it out.

Might want to add a note about that on the DFHack available hacks tab though. So people are aware not to worry about why it isn't working for them.

This seems like a small thing, but I think it would really help.

Unify the arrow keys vs +- system of menu navigation.  I tend to guess wrong first more often than not.

Yeah I just checked though, it was passable. He is spending his time outdoors though maybe another path finding issue.

And to everyone but the guy who didn't just politely tell me I was in the wrong forum, I'm sorry I posted it here. Had two windows open, thought I was in the one for asking those question.

Forum's in general seem to attract the condescending sort. But when Toady is trying so hard to get a game that is I think the greatest game I've seen in 35+ years of gaming out to be appreciated by the masses (good for him getting to finally cash in on steam btw, made me really happy to see that) every little bit of friendly kindness will help him a lot.

As I said, it's the greatest, but not very accessible. And in this day and age of hand holding, and making sure the player feels that quick pointless reward sensation for meaningless achievement, he needs all the help he can get.

It might be risque, but it seems you have no problem pushing those boundaries. Actually now that I think about it, I can't say for certain you don't have this in there already.

Considering the number of humanoid races, have you considered putting in cross species sexual proclivities? Say a dwarf female who gets really hot thinking about those sexy sexy kobolds.
