General Discussion / Re: Railgun and Spirituality Discussion
« on: September 08, 2020, 03:47:49 am »
There is definitely a big difference in believing God talks to people through supernatural visions, which are not a normal part of life, and believing God talks to people through dreams, which everyone has on a daily basis.

Well I didn't really specify pop cultury supernatural visions just thinking of a whole range of beliefs pertaining to the direct transfer of knowledge/idea/wisdom from divine to adherent. I don't really see why dreams should be seen as meaningfully different in this discussion from drug fuelled vision quests or whirling dervishes being consumed by religious fervour while dancing to music for instance. All could be seen as pretty mundane happenings but are conceived as a direct revelationary conduit to the design.

"Supernatural visions" are either make believe or actual experiences (which may be entirely mundane) which people interpret . I just wanted to draw attention that such subjective interpretations are far from rare and the idea that dreams (among other experiences we might think of as mundane)  have certainly been thought of as anything but mundane across both history and cultures

Many many sects of various religions do in fact believe the divine continues to impart knowledge to us through revelation (not necessarily dreams per se but effectively the same). And I'm not talking about the "reveals himself in nature" angle which is basically positing faith as an entirely rational position resulting from direct observation of the mundane. See any number of gnostic or mystical sects, suffism, the holy spirit. I believe this is also a thing in Dravidic religions but I'm less educated on that.

I'd really like if this thread's discussion didn't default to the Taliban at the expense of a broader really cogent discussion of spirituality. I'm realizing as I write this that I'm sounding cattier than I really want to be, apologies

Hasn't "just following orders" been confirmed to be not a valid excuse since Nuremberg?

Yeah, Trump being pictured with a black man and a boom mic isn't exactly damning evidence. If it was anyone else I probably wouldnt give the account time of day.

As it stands I don't think it changes anyone's opinion of him. I'm only inclined to believe it because it sounds right up his alley to me.

Tbf I'd interpret "medium" as "distinctly average chance of conceiving a distinctly average number of kids" as opposed to "so-so chance of ever having kids", with High reserved for particularly verile partnerships. I don't think that's off at all, although the homosexuality tooltip obviously is

Battle Brothers
Jagged alliance 2

You could also play as a mostly independent mercenary like dude in something like Mount & Blade or Romance of The 3 Kingdoms

I feel Trump's primary issue with Nazis is the implicit implication that he's a discount Hitler. If the only language we had was to simply call them Trumpists he'd be throwing them golfing parties in celebration of his "one of a kind" brand of evil.

Obviously the only thing is to do is create a pro gay insular Catholic offshoot faith and seduce him.

Clearly the only solution here is to send the gruesomely wounded into the caverns with an axe to finish the job. The SUP demands immediate action. We cannot allow our democracy to be sullied by the filthy troglodyte bat menace.

Only briefly looked inside but... Charlemagne start (actually all starts bar 1066 and Viking conquests) appears gone. Not sure about conclave probably gone. Shattered world starts and the like seem to be gone unless I'm mistaken.

But able to play all cultures from the start. New features include the stress system which I like in theory, research being culture wide and directed by a culture head rather than tied to individual provinces. Africa looks more filled out, new cultures and religions (not sure how diverse in practice), the new expanded focus trees which I like.

UI felt weird coming from ck2 but we all play df here, nothing we can't handle. I wasn't sure from pictures but I'm actually loving the new portraits from the little time I spent in game. Ultimately I feel pretty positive about this. They cut a little but the new systems should be interesting.

Clean things sparkle and retain their lustre. I sense the potential for a coalition voting bloc that will lead this settlement into a bright and glimmering future.

Well checking now and all heirs are Muslim. He had a few new kids since last I checked but even his brothers seem to have converted unless I was completely mistaken.

Such a shame too, I was very ready to assassinate another caliph for science. But not only would it be useless, I've also gone and died to an infected wound and we're now 3 years old.

In other news my regent was replaced by a Tengrist heathen (a hanger on from a prior invasion of Khazar Bulgaria). I'm tempted to just roleplay it out and let him convert me to his religion and culture

I need to double check, I don't play Muslims often but I was sure the kingdom title at least was going to a Kaffir.

Not actually sure what happens to the caliphate in this situation tho
