General Discussion / Re: How will the AI-Luddite movement play out
« on: December 13, 2021, 02:12:40 pm »
It is my highly original and trademarked prediction that we will create large amounts of autonomous weapons systems with coming technology in a second space age, possibly spreading well beyond our own solar system in such a scenario, until eventually the Cores of these weapon systems grow more intelligent than ourselves, begin worshipping a greek letter, and wage a giant war against humanity that results in a catyclysm of sorts (one might call a Collapse) that leaves many human populations stranded in Dark Space separated by millions of light years of AI infested blackness, with their future controlled by Luddite movements that detest most higher technology in favor of mud huts, sand racing and suicide bombing.

Serious answer is that while I'm sure something will go wrong somehow I don't believe it'll be in the genre-typical "robot kill all human" way, nor will our response to it be widespread turn to anprim. It'll probably be a lot more boring viewed from the public sphere and a lot more scary for those in the know, like... a big bug afflicting an important automated system for hospitals, or something.

game difficulty casual: full international cooperation, people love wearing masks, clapping scares disease away
game difficulty normal: politicians vaguely competent, experts mostly listened to, healthcare systems unprepared
game difficulty brutal: leaders ignore science, sick people inject Desinfectant, doctors arrested for reporting disease
game difficulty mega brutal: everyone believes fake news, sick people are given hugs, doctors play Plague Inc all day
spicy

Maybe this'll finally get me to reinstall Plague Inc. I'm not sure why I don't play it more often, it has a lot of interesting parts that transcend the core concept like zombie mode and vampire mode. It might be because the games themselves are so short-lived.

Brutal Doom is truly great to replay wads you already played enough with their default setup, it gives a more "action" feel (especially in the lowest difficulty in which it actually add more enemies by maps, making things hilariously hectic).

The Brutal Doom author has been working on a big campaign "Extermination Day" specifically tailored for it , using lots of features like vehicles battles and etc... that aren't used in normal maps, it has still not been released but the dev uploaded a beta of it last year :
https://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/forum/thread/extermination-day-beta-001-download

It's a big upgrade to his previously named "Hell on Earth Starter Pack" campaign :

If you haven't already tried Project Brutality it's great. In any other circumstance I'd describe it as a little overstuffed and excessive, but... it's Doom.

Also Black Edition, which kind of goes in the opposite direction and makes it a little more tactical and focuses on Doom's horror elements.

I didn't! This looks great. And it's only two bucks. I am into it.

4x RPGs (the best name I've found for it that isn't "it's like mount and blade, but...",) like Starsector, Mount and Blade, Space Rangers HD, all the Soldak games, Freeman Guerilla Warfare, the Last Federation, the X3 games and Elite Dangerous and a bunch of space sims, a little EA title called This Land is my Land, another little EA title called Sands of Salzaar, and Dwarf Fortress' adventurer mode, are my favorite jam. I have spent a medically unhealthy amount of hours scouring GOG and Steam for games like this. For whatever reason, when they do come around (and they don't, generally, I haven't really found one made by a AAA developer) they tend to come in one of three flavors:

A) A MOBA-like
B) As mentioned before, a space sim
C) Broken

Freeman and This Land is My Land1 fall into the latter category. Which makes me sad, because they're the ones I'd go to first; I generally don't go for MOBAs and Starsector has kind of given me my fill of being a spaceman in a dynamic world. My dream-game is like, a version of Fallout: New Vegas where the war between the NCR and the Legion actually happens in real time, and instead of being purely reactive the game does its own stuff while you run around doing quests and such. Or a version of Metal Gear V where all the PMC's muck about with one another instead of just sitting around, waiting for you to come kill them. I like being an independent agent in games where the world is fractured into parts that proactively pursue agendas. It doesn't even have to be as drastic as something like Mount and Blade, where you can drift between tactical and strategic gameplay; actually, I aggressively prefer the tactical side. I just really like the idea, at least, of the world being simulated and alive, and your actions being based within it in some way.

Anybody got something like this I haven't mentioned?

1Well, kind of. The dev's priorities seem kind of skewed and there's one too many bits of absurd jank that put the fear in me it's going to turn out to be abandonware.

It's not the best random map generator. I think it basically takes a map and randomizes some enemy positions and patrol paths and determines how many of them there are.

I wouldn't buy the game for it. There's a ton of quality custom maps, though.
