DF Suggestions / Re: Plastering walls
« on: April 24, 2010, 09:14:46 pm »
Also, it might be a good thing to bring in because it could be a nice prelude to allowing paintings and such.  IIRC Ancient egyptians plastered the interior of their tombs before painting on them.

This seems to be something that would fit in well with things like paintings and rugs and tapestries - more decorative fortress stuff.  And indirectly, with books, scrolls, engravings, and general history recording stuff.

Another thing that might fit in well with plaster is stucco and adobe.  As well as bricks and such.

Just kind of throwing ideas out there.

Edit:  I did not know it, but according to wikipedia, stucco and plaster are basically the same thing: plaster was used inside of buildings and stucco used outside, but they were composed of the same materials (along with mortar).  I didn't know that.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Liaison Ruining My Game
« on: April 16, 2010, 07:20:16 pm »
The only thing I can think of is to kill him.  In the new versions if a liason is killed, I believe they appoint a new one (better make a backup save just in case).

Kill orders are not limited to hostiles, so you should be able to target the liason.  I've never tried it myself, however.

Yeah, no mac version, but if you're willing to put a little work into it, you can get it to work with Wine, assuming you have an Intel mac and not a PPC.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do I need a new world?

No.  SEIGER just means that they start a campfire and hang out there for a while before heading towards your fort to attack.  Goblins and Elves (provided they are pissed off at you) will still seige you.

Yeah, if you want to play the newest version on a mac you have to play it on Wine or with an emulator or something.

DF Suggestions / Re: Bodyparts

Yeah, sorry, I don't think fangs is really accurate and I think it would give people the wrong impression.

I don't say "I have fangs."  When I think of dwarves, I don't really think of them having fangs.  Fangs are things for vampires and snakes and spiders.  I dunno.

I could see him using 'canine,' but that seems more scientific and less 'medieval' then 'eyetooth,' which has been used for a long time.  Also, I didn't realize that 'eyetooth' was at all inaccessible.

If it really bugs people, one thing he could do is just eliminate the different teeth names altogether, and have 'top front tooth, top middle tooth, top back tooth,' or something.  Though probably he could have 'top molar' because I'm pretty sure that 'molar,' at least, isn't too inaccessible.  But I could be wrong.  I didn't realize either 'eyetooth' or 'sweetbreads' were not-common-usage.  But then again, there are a lot of non-English-speakers that play DF, so maybe words like 'eyetooth' or 'molar' are too obscure.

I suck at computers (mac user here), but I figured out how to use wine without too much trouble.

Good luck!

The current version (which was just released as is somewhat buggy), is Windows only.  I play it on my mac using Wine (http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/), but I've heard others are able to use boot camp or VM stuff.

All I know is Wine works great.

If you're willing to play an older version, you can play the 40d19 - but you have to have Terminal installed, and you have to open the program through terminal.  Directions for mac use (along with the download), are in the "FotF: Dwarf Fortress 40d19" thread sticked at the top of this forum.  It runs significantly faster than the 40d version, but is otherwise unchanged.

Toady has said that he's going to import the current version to macs sometime in the future (not too long, hopefully)

Edit: well, 40d19 is unchanged gameplay-wise.  It does have certain graphical improvements (such as resizing windows on the fly) that make playing it easier, however.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Attributes don't increase?
« on: April 05, 2010, 10:21:28 am »
My military dwarves' attributes seem to be increasing.  All of them are 'incredibly tough' while before they weren't all that tough.

I do think that certain jobs only increase certain attributes, however - I don't think you'll get more agile from mining, for example (though I'm not sure - that's just a hypothetical).  I'm almost certain that social skills don't improve physical attributes anymore.

Could someone remind me, how to strip caged gobbos from their armour and weaponry?
They are residing at animal stockpile now. Tried [d]esignate - [ b] [d] over their cages, but it didn't work as intended.

It's the same as in 40d.  You can only do it from the stocks screen.  Go to the stocks, then look under weapons.  Press tab to get a complete list of all individual weapons.  The gobbo's weapons should be forbidden - you can unforbid the weapons and then dump them.

However, if there are merchants with guards on the maps, their weapons will also appear forbidden on the screen.  I'm not sure if your dwarves will try to steal their weapons or not.  It's kind of a PITA, but you can always tell which weapons belong to who by using the zoom to items command from the stocks screen.

DF General Discussion / Re: Got it running on my Mac with WINE
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:02:40 pm »
Hm.  That's odd.  I'm running it using Wine + mac + partial print (YES:0) + Accelerator + GFPS cap:20.  Running it REALTIME, but with all features on (3x3 embark site), I haven't yet gotten below 100 FPS.  I'm at 37 dwarves now, and it hasn't slowed down even during caravans.

Have had the minor (usual) bugs, but I've only had one 'major' glitch (just 10 mins ago the game crashed without warning).

Of course, I haven't broken into the underground yet, and that might slow things down once that happens.

But it's actually been running pretty fast for me.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [BUGS] 0.31.01 bugs

-Migrant arrives with skill 'adequate crutch-walker', has no need for a crutch.

Spoiler: images (click to show/hide)
I don't think this is a bug - the implication is that he broke his leg sometime in the past, and it healed completely before he reached your fortress.

In any case, I actually have only run into one bug thus far.  I don't see why people keep saying this release is 'buggy' - none of the bugs reported so far seem all that major, to be honest.

Pathfinding, job incompetence, and crashes are the major ones.

The big problem itself is not singular major problems, but stacks of minor problems.  For example, dwarves requiring body parts (I don't think anyone's completed one yet, but I would like to see a high boot menacing with spikes of left goblin foot) and typos/parse errors (stone bars - impossible to make, actually mean metal bars) that confuse people.

Also the boiling hot face-melting rain is somewhat of a hurdle for some.  There are ways around that, too.

True.  And thinking back, I suppose I've technically encountered two bugs (including the 'underground farming requiring muddy ground' bug).

However, it hasn't really affected my playing the game.  Of course, I can understand why pathfinding issues and job incompetence would be frustrating.

Not face-melting rain, however.  That sounds awesome.
