DF General Discussion / Re: The Angry Mac Owner Thread
« on: April 02, 2010, 06:33:04 pm »
I believe Rowanas has a PPC, and so cannot use Wine.

While I can understand Rowanas' impatience, I'm sure Toady will get a version out as soon as he can.  Quite frankly, I doubt that the early release of the Windows version pushed the Mac version back significantly, if at all.

In any case, I actually have only run into one bug thus far.  I don't see why people keep saying this release is 'buggy' - none of the bugs reported so far seem all that major, to be honest.

This may not be a bug.  Remember that all items on reclaim are forbidden. and you have to unforbid them before a dwarf will touch them in any way.  This is to prevent all dwarves from immediately running into the fort filled with monsters to retrieve all the various items.

Have you checked to see if the items are forbidden?

Tallow can be made into biscuits

Well, as you may know, this has been true for every past version.

Furthermore, 'tallow' (known as lard if it comes from a pig), is actually one of the few dwarven ingredients that actually belongs in biscuits.  IRL biscuits are made (generally) from flour, lard, and milk, I think.

Cooking bug: trying to create wine roasts, the cook combined them into a stack, but failed to make them into the roast (it might actually have been a 'fine' meal rather than a 'lavish' meal, I'm not sure).

On the same save, while I'm able to change my keyboard settings, they change back to defaults every time I exit and then re-enter the program.

Moss doesn't really do anything but sit there.  But it's really hard to actually see it in Fortress mode - you have to have a fort that lasts something like 15-20 years (my 13 year fortress doesn't have any moss yet).  So it took a long time to discover (since most forts don't last longer than 5-7 years).

Moss only grows on constructed structures, outside, after a long period of time.

DF Suggestions / Re: Medical procedures as "Uniforms"

Not precisely what the OP was talking about, but I believe there have been ritually castrated soldiers.  I though Janissaries were an example (though apparently that's incorrect as they had children).  But there are, at the very least, examples in fiction.

As for ritual mutilation, while I've never heard of cutting off fingers, I do think that scarification has a history (see, e.g., the Maori), though I'm not sure if it's connected to military service.

A modern analog would be military tattoos.

I think that if body modification ever goes in, then I could see something like this being connected to military service (getting a tattoo - or even a finger cut off - based on what squad you're in, for example).

Also, surnames have often been of professions if not of place of origin.

See:

Joe Carpenter
Joe Smith
Joe... uh... Patel? (Farmer)

Carter, Tanner, Fisher, Shepard...

. . .Cooper, Trader, Sterling, Baker. . .

I don't have a quote, but I swear I remember Toady saying he'd fixed large milkable animals - maybe it was when he was still doing the countdown?  Or perhaps just early on in this thread?

Edit: actually, as of Feb. 4th (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=30026.msg1012311#msg1012311) it seems milking is still broken.

I think the devlog helps a lot.  I know with games like Cortex Command where - even though I know that logically the guy is working on it - there's no way I'd donate because there's no tangible way to realize the game is progressing until he releases a new version (and that seems to happen only once every year at the most).

I would be very surprised if the misc bugfixing is over.  I'm guessing that there are a ton of bugs from all the new features.

Also, the fact that a human cut another human in half with his fingernails in today's devlog suggests that there are still some important bugs that need crushing.

That's a good idea (the benchmark fortress idea).

I'm playing on a mac, and I seem to be getting pretty similar performance to what I was getting with d18 - which is much higher than any of the previous d#s.

DF General Discussion / Re: Badass Patron Saints
« on: March 05, 2010, 10:16:31 am »
I'm an atheist, but I'm always down for some hagiography.

What about St. Chad?  He's the patron saint of good losers.  He seems like a pretty laid back guy.

Also, FWIW, I think that the religion of the dwarves of Dwarf Fortress would fit in well with something like Catholicism - awesome chanting and old ceremonies and massive vaulted stone caverns (like cathedrals) and candles and lots of old, traditional religious 'tools' (like ancient saint relics & old crosses &c.).

I dunno.  When I think of dwarf religion, I either think of the dwarves as being very practical and not generally having ceremonies (even if all the individual dwarves are actually quite pious), or as having elaborate ceremonies with lots of gold and with religious costumes & such (more like Catholicism).

Also, lets try to avoid turning this into a religious debate thread.  Some people are religious, some aren't, and that's all cool.  And it sucks when someone insults another's belief (or lack thereof).  And we all love Dwarf Fortress, so it shouldn't really matter anyway.

That is a blatant lye,

Better be careful or you might get buuuuuurned.
