DF Gameplay Questions / How do I make animal people work?
« on: May 28, 2022, 12:08:50 pm »
I made a group of elephant man into long-term residents using DFHack. None of them have any skills whatsoever. Which will make them not able to do anything when they join the fortress fully. Is there a way to give them some skills?

"Let's try this again, shall we?"

Hello, and welcome to Competitive Evolution! Again! Here you will compete by evolving your lineage through time, hardships and catalysms. I made this game before, and decided to revamp it into existence again. It is easy to maintain, yet very flexible.

I made things significantly harsher and much less happy-go-lucky. Sorry, not sorry. And I promise the creature descriptions will be better this time.

The Way of Action

You play as an evolutionary lineage, and you make it evolve and survive.

Players will congregate in teams of at most 4 players, with maximum team count being 5.

Each one of you will have a single vote to use each round. You can use this vote to;

     ●Suggest a new mutation, adding a
        new feature to the teams creature.
     ●Improve upon a faulty, vestigial,
       or insufficent feature, which gets a
       +1 in dice points due to it already
       having a base to develop on.
     ●Sacrifice your vote to support one of
       your teammates vote, granting the
       said vote a +1 in dice points. (This
       function can only be used once per
       vote to prevent over-supporting with
       everyone hogging over one vote.
       Come up with you own ideas.)

If a team evolves sexual, or any other type of resource-intensive way of reproduction, they gain a special roll they can add to any vote they want. It is fittingly called the Sexual Selection bonus-penalty, and operates as a 7-sided dice, with its number ranging from 3 to -3. It can either be a blessing or a curse, and must be used every turn once unlocked. Where and how it will be used will be decided by all of the team that has it. Its result will be applied onto the previously selected normal vote.

The Dices

The degree of your personal votes success is determined by a 5-sided dice I will roll.  Values of the said rolls are;

     5=Better than expected. The addition/
     modification adds an small extra
     perk along with the intended feature.
     Significant increase in the species'
     fitness.
     4=Just as you asked. No more, no less.
     An increase in the species's
     fitness.
     3=The vote is successful, but the
     feature comes out as mediocre, and
     doesn't adds, or substracts anything.
     Little change in fitness.
     2=The votes effects are more harmful
     than beneficial, but not to a major
     degree. A minor decrease in the
     species's population.
     1=Maladaptation. The feature/
     modification proves to be defective
     or harmful, causes a significant
     decline in the species' population.

This dice upper caps at 5, period. No making it 6. The lower cap is 1. You won't get a -1 or something even if Sexual Selection Modifier lowers something down by 3.

But just because you got a 5, doesn't necessarily means you get the benefits. For example, evolving eyes is useless if there is no nervous system to control and use it. Or a jaw won't work without muscles, which will work very inefficently if there is no respiratory and/or circulatory systems around. It's a ladder of prgression, you first need the supporting systems to get more complex things in your range of efficency.

Populations

The state of your species' population is indicated as wildlife status symbols used worldwide, and their success will be signified by their population status.

      LC: Least concern. This species
      enjoys their high and healthy
      population counts. Not in any direct
      threat.
      NT: Near Threatened. Not quite in
      danger, but could be in a better
      situation than it is.
      VU: Vulnerable. This species is at the
      limit from enough, to not enough.
      Needs to get better at survival a bit.
      EN: Endangered: The danger of
      extinction is close to this species.
      Needs to adapt to whatever is
      causing its decline.
      CR: Critically Endangered: It's at the
      edge of going extinct. Something
      must be done, and quick, or else...
      EX: Extinct. This species has no living
      members. If you hit this, you lose
      your current lineage entirely and
      have to branch out of a still-extant
      clade.

Events

Things such as geological or cosmological events will also be rolled once every round. Two dices will be rolled, one for the strength, the other for the effect. Strength dice is 100-sided, and Temperament dice is 7-sided. The values are;

Strength dice:

      0-30= Nothing happens.
      31-70= Minor event.
      71-90=  Major Event
      91-100= Very Major event.

Temperament dice:

      7= Awsome stuff
      6= Good stuff
      5= Convinient stuff
      4= "Meh" stuff
      3= Inconvinient stuff
      2= Bad stuff
      1= Awful stuff

The Environment

The games setting is around on a weird, yet hospitable star, on a small rocky planet called Thetri. It is pretty similar, yet wildly different from our own. Thetri has a mass and volume of approximately 1 Earth, and their composition is also pretty similar, except Thetri has much more radioactive material in its mantle, and thus much more geologically active. Expect volcanoes.

The starting location is a large, and very deep freshwater mountain lake on a volcanic mountain range. It's warm, and has geothermal vents at its depths. The shores of the lake are very shallow and lukewarm, but it sharply descends at the middle. A small, very shallow stream flows from even higher up, its source unknown.

Thetri, at this moment, is home to all kinds of unicelluar organisms, and 2 kinds of very simple multicelluar lifeforms, analogues to Terran fauna and flora, respectively. These lifeforms are the ones you start out from.

First is the Pea. Pea is a, well, pea-sized, aquatic bottomfeeder proto-animal. It is a merely a cluster of cells, that very slowly move around and feed on whatever they touch, including eachother. To reproduce, they bud a smaller Pea from a random place of their bodies. They lack any advanced structures.

The second is the Pancake. Pancakes are very small, purple protoplants, as wide as a penny and thin as foil. They are completely immobile and flat, only move to where the currents take them to. They reproduce by shedding small, regrowing pieces from their sides. They lack any advances structures. Their color stems from the weird sunlight on Thetri.

Once you select a lineage, you are stuck with it until either it goes extinct or the game ends/dies.

General Etiquette

Please write down the team you are in when you vote. It makes my job much easier.

Vote realistically and openly. Just saying "circulatory system" or "limbs" is not enough. Is the circulatory system open or closed? How many and/or what kind limbs are to be added? You must specify these. Little explanations will be enough, but you can go into some detail if you wish, just not in excess, please.

Please refrain from opening new teams, if there are teams with open spots for players, join them instead. This isn't an obligation though, you can open your own team if you wish, unless all five team slots are full, in that case you can't.

If no one takes the role of the predator in the first 5 rounds, I will open up my unjoinable GM team and assume the said role, with all the four votes with as much votes as the largest team has, and the SS modifier if available. This is to make sure the game does not stagnates due to a lack of evolutionary pressure. You have been warned, I will show no mercy.

The things above have already happened.

You can join anytime you want. Unless all spots are full, which is unlikely.

Ah, the Bay12 Skyscraper. An eldritch spire of imagination and wonder. A masterfully engineered, long chain of pocket dimensions of all kinds, connected by a vast teleportation system that allows people to go to any floor from anywhere else in it in only moments. It was created and built by various beings of equal diversity to its floors, united under the same ancient realm and its protector and creator deity. It is still being added on and built ''up''- whatever that may mean in interdimensional terms- as I am writing this, and it may continue to be built for ages to come. But this adventure is not about it. In fact, Bay12 Skyscraper is only very distantly, if not at all, relevant to the happenings of this venture.

Instead, what will you see here is an another skyscraper entirely, its name lost to time. While it is structurally mostly same, it is younger and shorter. The realm it resides has been long since abandoned by its inhabitants, and so had its growth come to an halt equally long ago. It's reality connectors are unstable, with the only means of transport between floors being an elevator.

The reason you are here? You are here to contain. A race of demented apparitions roam this towers many floors. A few people who returned tell the stories of horrifying cubical beings and their wailings, screams, laughter, and their maddening, unceasing clickings. You shall detain and resolve this anomaly as your quest. Then you will make sure to destroy whatever the entrance dimension of this tower is, thus sealing it forever away.

Go on brave adventurers, and do not fret at the insanities you will find inside!

In this game, you will be traversing a skyscraper. Your goal is to traverse this abandoned tower and deal with the dangers inside. The dice determines your success, your characters can't be OP, you know the deal.

Dice is 20 sided. The values are below.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The elevator, which is what carries you onto the next floor and beyond, only activates when everyone in your party is inside it. You will have to cooperate, and ascending floors alone is usually not an option.

This is perhaps the simpliest game I have ever came up with. There is no way I can mess this things management. There is just none. The unbearable chaos will be instead on you all. This game is pure RNG and luck, and no strategy whatsoever.

Its simple, you branch out of a single species and try to stay extant as long as you can as the tree continues upward. Species count caps at the number I like at the moment, and player cap is infinite. Game ends in round 100.

The tree will be presented in all but text that make lines. With the joining number you have being placed at its divergence point.

Something like...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Each round, for every extant species, a coin will be tossed. If it is Tails, it goes extinct. If it is Heads, it splits into two. You are protected until you have 3 species on your branch for the first time, after that may Toady and Armok have mercy on ya, because the Dice Gods and Kek surely won't.

Begin putting your names on the tree so you will have your names on it when I roll a thousand coins at once and crash the RNG site.

This isn't version specific, all of them count.

For me it was the rain melting everything it lands on.

Hello, and welcome to my new game. This ones a bit unorthodox. It contains an entirely explorable, procedurally generated galaxy, with unique stars and planets included. Each of them are special, and I have myself generated each of them using my very own generator. It is a bit simplistic and cartoonish, but whatever.

This is a scifi-fantasy strategy/RTD game, where each one of you play as hyperadvanced A.I of prefereed origin and features that seek to establish themselves as the most prominent one. You may fight, ally, or isolate, its all your choosing.

You will have 6 action points each round that you can use to make whatever you wish, will it be ordering your robots to open new mines, constructing a planetary shipyard with those resources, or mass-scale terraform an entire planet.  It is all up to you.

While mundane things, such as moving units, scouting, or communicating are free,  things like constuctions, attacks, and resource gatherings are not. Each of them will cost you one point. Your success will be determined by a 10 sided success dice, which can be gradually boosted +1 by researching, using 2 points, with the bonus coming in the next same round. The success of research can also be boosted by researching exactly on itself. Research has limits though, as each specific thing can be researched 5 times before it can’t be improved anymore.

It can also be influenced by the environment, planets conditions for example.

Some actions may be impossible. Such as trying to move from one star system or cluster to another without the necessary technology.

There is a strict 10 player cap, as there are only 10 starter planets, each altered from their original states by me to allow the players an acceptable start, as some planets have been generated to be totally garbage in comparison to others. But they are not cardboard copies, so some of you may have it a bit harder than others. Nothing serious though, I made sure of that.

The game will start when there are 10 players. When you join, post a random number from 1-1000. This way I can randomly choose which players gets a particular starter world.

The planets and moons are the main focus, so there are no asteroid belts, and stars are just things that give various amounts of light, and their type has no correlation with a planets climate. Planets are also like the ones in Spore or Astroneer. They are quite small, and do not have that much diversity in them. But they do have actual surfaces which I will map in text. They are no simple icons.

You all start in resource rich, habitable planets of varying, but not extreme attributes, with a single unit of general purpose drones, along with some mining and industrial resources and the single-use colony ship you came with and its inbuilt powercore.

Please do not meta-game, as it will ruin the immersion. But you are free to use espionage to spy on others by ingame means.

You may begin with your own names. Oh, and you can name any planets, moons and systems other players haven't named anything you want, as long as it is within reason and decency.

Join in now, while you can, for there is no such thing as late joining in this game.

Begin!

DF General Discussion / Rarest Creature in DF; What is it?

I am just curious, and sorry if this has been discussed before. I looked around the web and there seems to be no such discourse.

What I want to know is the type of creature, of any kind, that can be found in vanilla DF, that has the lowest chance of encountering.

Hello, and welcome to my brand new forum game. (Not so "brand new" now, but no matter.)

This game is a bit complicated, but it is much simpler than it seems. It all about evolutionary ecology, and taxonomy.

You play as clades of animal species, and your goal is to become as much specious, and long lasting as possible. To accomplish this, you will sprout new species from your branch of the evolutionary tree into available niches and environments, and make sure that existing ones survive, while the shape of the map constantly changes and possible mass extinctions loom over. You will also battle with one another too, to keep the most space.

Here, is how things work.

Player number is capped at 15. New players are always welcome if there is space. To join after the game begins, and original population spilts into countless separate species, you must find a clade from a player that is the most genetically distant from the other members of their lineage. If you then decide on them, then are your separate branch, no questions asked. Not that player you split off of will care much about a few forgotten offshoots. If there is no such clade, then you can simply branch out of an extant lineage, out of nowhere.

When you join or are posting an action, includeyour desired, distinguishable hex colour code, besides pure white. This is necessary, and please, add it into your appopriate replies each time. This will help me immensely at categorising.

There will be a visual map and a taxonomic tree (where your color will be used) in every turn report, along with a chart of each biomes niches, and if they are occupied or not, including the universal niches.

Come on in! Jump in! You can join whenever you like.

This is a bit unfinished and there might be possible sticky situations that I haven't thought of, but is still comprehensive enough. I may add onto it in the future. Your feedback about the game is valuable, as they may reveal holes, unadresses things and internal contradictions so I can fix them.

Roll To Dodge / The Spiral; An RP-RTD game

The Intro
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Welcome, to The Spiral, a story driven RP-RTD game about a party of adventuring heroes saving the reality from collapsing, and facing many wonders and enemies along the way.

You can be whatever you wish. Something derived from your forum name and profile, a person from a species from a piece of media, something you came up on the fly, anything. Just don't make them OP.

The story will be pieced out by both a set sequence of events, and your luck and actions.

Your luck is determined by, yes you guessed it, a dice roll. Battles, voyages and other such active, moves are bound to this, while scouting, conversing, and other passive actions are not, and their return will be fit to the environment and the situation you are in.

There will be a way to respawn if one of you perishes in any way, won't say what as it will be a spoiler.

The dice is 20-sided. The values are...

The 5 result types also vary inside themselves. For example, a 12 is a better neutral than 9.

Know that once at least 5 players are in, the game will be full, and no longer allow more players in. Unless one quits, and we will need a replacement.

This is an RP game, so please play along in your actions, but simple commands are also fine.

Write up your characters, and join in the adventure!

The Introduction

Hello, and welcome to Competitive Evolution! Here you will compete by evolving your lineage through time, hardships and catalysms.

The Voting Action

You play as an evolutionary lineage, and you make it evolve and survive.

Players will congregate in teams of at most 3 players, with maximum team count being 5.

     ●Sacrifice your vote to support one of
       your teammates vote, granting the
       said vote a +2 in dice points.

There is also a special vote that comes with developing sexual, or any other resource-intensive type of reproduction called Sexual Selection vote (SS vote for short). This vote can't be supported or used to support, and what it is going to be used for will be decided by the all people on the team. It can still take the +1 bonus of improvement though, as it is indirectly related to the vote itself.

The Dice

The degree of your votes success is determined by a 5-sided dice I will roll.  Values of the said rolls are;

Dice caps at 5. No making it 6.

But just because you got a 5, doesn't necessarily means you get the benefits. For example, evolving eyes is useless if there is no nervous system to control and use it. Or a jaw won't work without muscles, which will work very inefficently if there is no respiratory and/or circulatory systems around. It's like a tech tree, you need the supporting systems to go more complex.

Sexual Selection vote failure or success affects your population counts much less than a normal failure or success, but there are more chances to mess up with it anyways.

Populations

The state of your species' population is indicated as wildlife status symbols used worldwide.

1: Awful stuff.

The Environment

Game takes place in a giant saltwater crater lake on the planet Aqatuico, a world very similar to our own.

This sea is named The Crater Sea, It is warm, shallow and full of minerals and nutients.

Surrounding the sea, a barren, lifeless rocky wasteland goes on for hundreds of kilometers. A system of freshwater rivers go through these plains and feeds The Crater Sea, from who knows where. These close-proximity rivers are called The Harbringers. There is five of them, coming from the same direction.

The Crater Sea is home to unicelluar algea, and 2 kinds of multicelluar lifeforms. These lifeforms are the ones you start out from:
