DF Wiki Discussion / What's the policy on spoilers for v0.50.XX?
« on: December 21, 2022, 12:00:53 am »
What's the policy on spoilers for v0.50.XX?  I believe i've seen claims as unbelievably radical as claiming that Dwarf Fortress doesn't have spoilers anymore.  This seems to me like something which REALLY needs consensus before a decision is made—after all, we don't want to go around accidentally causing extremely deep irreversible harm to people.

The wiki hasn't been stolen from the community, has it?

DF General Discussion / "Unknown Age" string in string dump
« on: August 10, 2022, 10:07:37 pm »
I was recently perusing the string dump looking for something completely different (I was curious about the possible ominous messages from divination dice) when i noticed, beneath the strings for the ages, the following three strings (i'm not sure if the latter two are actually related, but i'm fairly confident the first one is:)
Code: [Select]
Unknown Age
Monster
Rampage
These strings were undocumented on the wiki—I've taken the liberty of adding them here.
Has anyone ever encountered these?  Is encountering them even possible?

Here's my suggestion:  When the new artifact behavior is introduced that makes them more magical and gives them new properties, the old behavior of "a person's single best work" should be preserved under the name of a magnum opus.  Perhaps some tweaks to the behavior could be done—for example, if strange moods are still used for artifacts and therefore can't be used for magnum opuses, it could perhaps instead take a very long time to construct intermittently.

DF General Discussion / Hypothesis re: most recent announcement

The elves are also getting reworked to make them more of a challenge. The number of trees felled that it takes to anger them has been greatly reduced, and their attacks are more deadly. These settings can also be changed if you choose, but watch out when you start in the savage lands as you are in for a surprise, along with the rest of the horrible stuff we have planned for this weekend!
(from here)

I have a hypothesis that this means that they're going to set the local wildlife against you.  Or, less likely, we're going to see a return of treants, though i suspect not.

DF Suggestions / A change to strange moods
« on: January 04, 2022, 07:59:13 am »
Note:  According to the Dwarf Fortress wiki, the content of this suggestion contains minor spoilers.

Currently, the various "flavors" of strange mood, with the exception of the fell mood, are somewhat frivolous and don't really add that much to the game.  All they really do right now is slightly encrypt the material requests.  They certainly need to be more interesting, and while I can't think of any way to make the secretive and macabre moods more interesting (and if nobody else can, then maybe they should just be removed), I have a thought for the possessed moods.

Possession would be actual possession: a dwarf (any dwarf!) could be possessed by the spirit of a dwarf that never had a strange mood before they died (though if they died from failing to create an artifact, they can't possess anyone).  If the strange mood is completed, then the dwarf that was possessed still wouldn't get the experience, but the artifact would count as being the artifact of the spirit that possessed the dwarf, so the dwarf could still make their own artifact.  If the strange mood does not get completed, then the dwarf that got possessed would be cursed—I'm not sure whether this would just be a curse of insanity, or whether it would be something else.  (This is something that I'm a little dubious on—I tried to think of a way that the possessing spirit could get harmed, but I couldn't think of one.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf worshipping a force?
« on: December 19, 2021, 08:50:59 pm »
A migrant wave just arrived to my fortress (it was a gem setter and their two children…not great), and I noticed that one of them worships a force (in addition to two deities).  I thought that forces was exclusive to elves and elven civs—what's going on with here?  The wiki page provided no help.

DF Suggestions / Dwarves changing their preferences
« on: December 05, 2021, 10:31:45 pm »
The way this would work is that if a dwarf were to have a positive/negative experience with something, their preferences for that thing would change.  Some examples:

  • A dwarf who witnesses the close death of a friend by a bear would gain a detestitude of bears.
  • A military dwarf assigned a bismuth-bronze weapon would slowly gain a preference for bismuth bronze.
  • A dwarf that was forced to use a banana wood spear to beat an enemy would gain a preference or detestitude for banana wood, depending on their feelings on death.
  • A dwarf whose lover has a preference for amber opal would slowly gain a preference for amber opal.

There's probably some other ways to incorporate this, too.

DF Suggestions / Date should be more visible in Fortress Mode
« on: February 10, 2021, 05:19:17 pm »
I had to go all the way to the Stocks screen to be able to see the date, and even then, I only noticed it by accident, since it's far away from the stuff I'd be focusing on.

DF Suggestions / Liquid Fire as a cooking ingredient
« on: October 12, 2020, 02:01:14 pm »
Currently, Liquid Fire has no use except as a trade good.  I propose that the way it be used is not as a military thing or something like that, but instead as a spicy food additive.  If you think that this is unrealistic, as it seems like a venom, keep in mind that caffeine, certain natural laxitives, and capsacian were initially developed as defenses, but they're so useless against us that they're considered tasty.

DF Suggestions / A change to savageness
« on: October 04, 2020, 11:25:56 am »
Instead of an area being either low savage, medium savage, or high savage, it would be either savage, neutral, or civilized, and instead of animal people and giant animals only occuring in high savage areas, giant animals would only occur in savage areas whereas animal people would only occur in civilized areas.

DF Suggestions / Improve the advanced worldgen's POLE token
« on: September 29, 2020, 02:43:36 pm »
It would be formatted as [POLE:X:Y].  Y and X can be either YES, MAYBE, or NO, and would determine the north and south poles, respectfully.

DF Suggestions / Bismuth crystals: a new manufactured gem
« on: September 25, 2020, 10:02:10 am »
Currently, the only use for bismuth is for bismuth bronze and looking pretty.  Therefore, I propose a new use for bismuth: bismuth crystals.

Bismuth crystals would be manufactured at a Metalsmith's Forge or a magma forge.  They would require a bar of bismuth, and they'd require a bar of fuel at a conventional forge.  They'd probably come out as a small bismuth crystal, which could be used for encrusting goods, but they'd also have a chance to come out as a large bismuth crystal, and you have no control over which one happens.

And if you don't know what bismuth crystals look like, then just look at this gorgeous image:
