I agree that a bigger variety of military challenges will have to be provided eventually, but first and foremost the military needs to be fixed. I find that the current state of responsiveness makes your squads less reliable than the fortress guards of 40d, and those weren't under player control at all.

And one or ten years of training, it doesn't matter. They're still meat for the grinder. Turning off sieges is the only known way to prevent most troubles with the military at this time.

I hate this mana/power/hunger/X Y limiters thing. Lets wait for see what toady and threetoe have for us.
I concur, magic become like loading a gun with bullets that way. I'd prefer a system where the skill of the mage, the circumstances (everything from the phase of the moon, over the colour and material of the mages clothing, to appropriately shaped tools) and some innate ability (to see magic energy, for example, which allows people to manipulate it effectively) determine the effectiveness of magical manipulation. It's easier to balance that way (ordinary melee magic ought to be no more damaging than a hammer blow - fireballs are for the very skilled, very well prepared mages).

This is a quite valid explanation.
would you rather have better military, a logical method for handling stone dumping, and rebalancing of the flawed features that make the game 'too easy' to some. (mods anyone?) a better way to manage your dwarfs professions, a refinement of the way that war, diplomacy, advanced mechanics, defence, economy, the noble system, and world simulation.

...

or tedious, time consuming waste management.
(basically what orius said.)
Nobody was talking about prioritizing waste management above all these other aspects of the game; the poll was about whether to include it at all. Timing is up to Toady to decide, based on technical expediency.

That didn't make Toady put an [INVULNERABLE] tag on innocent civilians or peaceful mermaids.

He also didn't implement specific mermaid-killing mechanics. The players had to figure that out on their own.
He won't put in poo-flinging antics either.

Honestly, I don't like this idea specifically because it has already moved this forum one step closer to literally being a cesspool. The mouth-breathing droogs already have drunkenness, gladiator fights, abuse of elves, and !!MAGMA!!, and I'd rather not put one more object in their enclosure for them to play with.
I sympathize, but we can't let the growth of the game be stunted by the tasteless minority. We should consider to get rid of the vomit encrustation before considering leaving out essential economic cycles and desires that drive the plot of 95% of movies.

If you'll look at this thread or any other thread about this, you'll see that that is the problem: Evidently, we can't.
That didn't make Toady put an [INVULNERABLE] tag on innocent civilians or peaceful mermaids.

I can't believe I have to say that, but then again, I can't believe anybody would take that poll seriously.
Certainly not on its own, but it seems to illustrate the stalemate between the two sides of the debate well.

What do you think the Offical Dwarf Fortress name for "Soul Power/Energy" should be called?

All of them, and then some.

There's not reason to limit magic to one universal set of rules, just as there is no reason to limit the gods to just one. Vancian magic, shamanism, miracles, power dependent on piety, alchemy, animism, necromancy, runes, kabbala, voodooism, etc. etc. All of them!

Its kind of boring how nobody is interested in suggesting or commenting... Oh well.
Focused threads get more response. It's one of the disadvantages of posting grab bags of small stuff.

- Lists are bad because they don't focus the discussion.
- Many of the listed points are as old as this forum and don't need repeating (eg. engrave constructed walls).
- Many of the points are known bugs. Check the bug tracker.
- Some of the points are already in the game (e.g. disallow booze cooking).

Most of the points left are balancing issues, and then there are one of two that deserve mention. But you can't expect everyone do dig them out: the suggestions forum would be more useful without this post.
Actually I think it's more that the suggestion forum is better off without people telling other people to not post suggestions.

If certain ideas keep popping up, there is probably a good reason for that. not all ideas deserve equal opportunities, the most popular ones should go first. Don't you agree?

There's the eternal suggestion list for the pop poll (stickied).

At least show you're aware which ones are already recorded, and if possible add something new. If you don't want to slough through a list of other people's ideas, why should they do so with yours? However, feel free to do thread necromancy if you want to bring an idea to attention again, or want to comment on it.

And yes, adding reiterative posts that aren't focused do increase the noise-to-signal ratio of the forum, making it less effective and wasting Toady's time. I'd rather have him squash a bug than reading this thread.

DF Suggestions / Re: Depth by darkening
« on: February 04, 2012, 02:47:06 pm »
It just struck me that this idea could as just as well be applied to make the underground tunnel structure better viewable. With the above progressive darkening of deeper tiles active, we just need a toggle to make all stone transparent (for viewing purposes) (or at least a few dozen levels, a black bottom is necessary). That way, you would get a view from the top down on all your tunnels, as if they were hanging in the air. A sideward view is possible with minimal adaptation of the same algoritms.

Let me get this straight.

We have dwarves that eat only once every six weeks in this game but people are worried that that lack of sex and excretion hurt realism?
Fortress mode runs on compressed time by necessity. That doesn't mean elementary cause and effect can be forgotten. Especially not in a game that tracks every dragonfly ichor spatter cause by cats hunting.

You may play violent, corpse-filled, concentration camp forts - I don't. And DF supports both of our playstyles.
I don't either.
Adding graphic content into vanilla would support your playstyle at the expense of mine, which is what I object to.  As I noted, there is a mod for that if you really, really want it.
I hate to break the news to you, but the current DF does include the aforementioned possibilities, and you weren't put off by it, even though it was theoretically against your style. You won't be put off by putting more stuff like that in either.

All of those things are possible, just like in real life.  And I don't choose to do them in real life, and I don't choose to do them in DF.  Adding in detailed sex reports would be a different level of in-your-face, which is what I was objecting too.
Alright, but we're only just discussing mentioning sex or have the dwarves exhibit (no pun intended) behaviours like sleeping in the same bed once in a while or have "Urist enjoyed the private time with their lover" thoughts. I even forget combat reports half the time, I don't see why even sex reports, which almost nobody is asking for anyway, couldn't be forgotten as easily.
