So, I've been mulling over something i've felt was missing from Cataclysm lately due to this variant's announcement, but in doing so and roughing out the basic idea alone i've realised that it's well beyond my skill level and attention span.

Posting it as even if I doubt anything'll come of it, I can get it out there and get it off my mind.

Both forks of the original from what I gather.

Cataclysm by Whales was forked and the DDA modification was made by... I forget the team, one of them had a wolf avatar and name though, that I think was one of, if not the first on the team. I'm sure someone else can confirm or correct me there who recalls this better. It was made with the intent for it to be all the things that were over the top/absurd if I recall right that Whales felt didn't fit his vision, then swung from one extreme to another.

This is a fork of Cataclysm by Whales and not DDA, with the intent for it to be Zaimoni's vision and direction, by the look of it.

Given what Zaimoni's said about it so far, it has my interest and i'll be interested in seeing how it evolves.

Are you planning to diverge wildly in your own direction, or remain closer to what you believe was Whales baseline for balance vs realism vs gameplay?

Is this going to have under the hood changes to the base engine to fix things such as the sprawling array of files that were created for your saves/world that were issues with Whales version?

If you're going to do mod support and the like, does this mean that for those that would like additional depth to the survival simulation, that a mod to add them to the loop would be possible, so that those that would prefer a closer to vanilla experience could leave them disabled?

Are suggestions or requests for features something you'd welcome if you're uncertain of your current direction, or if the community might believe they'd fit in with the direction you ultimately choose to go in?

There's always the Git commit history, though you'd need to compile the game yourself.
I had a feeling it might come to that in the end - I suppose if nothing turns up, one day when i'm feeling the desire for such (mis)adventurr I'll look into compiling an old version.

Despair not! There are some old versions up here: https://dev.narc.ro/cataclysm/jenkins-promoted/

Assuming you're looking for windows tiles, here are direct links for
0.B: https://dev.narc.ro/cataclysm/jenkins-promoted/Windows/Tiles/cataclysmdda-0.B-2399.zip
0.C circa 2015: https://dev.narc.ro/cataclysm/jenkins-promoted/Windows/Tiles/cataclysmdda-0.C-2834.zip
0.C from hallowe'en 2018: https://dev.narc.ro/cataclysm/jenkins-promoted/Windows/Tiles/cataclysmdda-0.C-8083.zip

I would point out that you shouldn't necessarily skip out on the current version just because of something you read. The old versions don't let you build a car that can turn into a boat, powered by a salvaged helicopter engine; or build a small army of stupid but oddly useful NPCs and get them to make a castle for you and do your laundry; or let you press "O" and automatically disperse your loot into a dozen tidy piles in a few seconds; or blow a house up with a fireball spell; or climb onto a rooftop and snipe zombies several floors below; or, like a pied piper, lure zombies up to a balcony and climb down to watch them reach for you and plummet to their demise; or find a scroll of Cause Bear.

Of course, if you played the new version and are really not into it, that's another matter (if it's gun fouling that turns you off I'd even be on your side, although I think we've got a fix planned or already merged). I just would caution against picking something out of the changelog - or worse, something someone else saw in the changelog - and writing the whole game off because of it. Some of the changes I've seen get a lot of bad word of mouth didn't even wind up getting merged into the game.
Thank you for the links, when I have time i'll see about getting back into one of the older versions.

A fair amount of what I have read, on the topic of the newer versions, has been reactions to ongoing changes. Of course, some of that as noted, may well have been reactions to changes that never got merged that I'm simply misremembering as being a point of contention. Being one of those that got into the game back when Whales was actively developing it and having initially fallen in love with the survival-lite game that was emerging there's also going to be rose tinted lenses involved in what I perceive of the game - I suppose I should mull over giving one of the new or nightly versions a shot instead though, as then the elements that I like or dislike'll be possible to quantify and convey any feedback over.

Though with that said I may go for a version utilising your tileset when it's complete as breaking away from the ascii i'm familiar with at the same time would make the entire experience feel that little bit more fresh and new. Shaking things up like that'd ensure i'm not looking at it as a case of the same old game, but worse before i've even given it chance to show its direction and development for itself.

So, being one of those that finds a lot of what I read on the direction the mod has gone in to be unappealing and having found the download links for the prior versions on the mods page to be dead in the case of the 0.C build and no longer present in the case of earlier ones, is there any reputable or official source for the older versions?

It was the name whispered to me by one whom's laughter tinkled like bells, that flitted between trees and crept amongst their roots, that danced where the moonbeams fell and drank copious amounts of fermented nectar, she be a' sidhe be, she slurred in drunken reverie, only it was to her grave misfortune that she had started me so, for I screamed and she dropped dead.

I don't want to enter - just share the first thing that came to mind when I took a peek at this.

There once was a dwarf called Urist,
And in the mountains he flourished,
'till he looked up to the sky
proclaimed "One day i'll fly!"
yet died making a rocket, malnourished.

I'm hoping that the current issue with Gibraltar isn't going to be used to polarise people against a 'common foe'. We don't need more enemies being made and more lasting emnity out of something that's already a mess - that feels like that may be a little much to hope for in the current political climate though.

Perhaps listing the things you've tried and the steps taken with them'd help with troubleshooting - do you have ad blocker/script blocker addons that might be causing issues?

-snip-

Terraforming by cake, reclaimation of resources from cake, cake fueled space exploration.
I love the scope in the thinking there given the relative absurdity of the starting point - if some of these things had that kind of scope in the thought that went into them, i'd have probably found them more engaging in general to read through. I guess as was implied earlier, there's only so large something of this nature can get, so many people that can be involved before it becomes detrimental for it as a whole.

I'm surprised this game's still going given how long ago I used to play it myself.
I remember being disatisfied with the direction it was going as character skills were made so costly you could scarcely afford to specialise in a field.

Might take a peek at it now its had a big update, though I suspect I'm going to continue taking displeasure with blue's design choices. Won't let that stop me giving it a fair shot, mind.

Hoo boy, I thought I was a lurker. I'm guessing that 01:01:01 has something to do with the forum transfer?
It appears so, a glance at other people from that forums signup era says they all have the same. I've absolutely no idea when I signed up by this stage. The transfer caused a number of oddities like that, and I believe some of the older posts being unsearchable via the profiles of those that made them.

Jesus Christ almighty. Are you the patron saint of lurkers? i mean... damn... tell us about what you think of the forum I guess. I mean, you have the experience I guess...
Sure, I lurk a bit but I'm more a procrastinator though than a lurker. Pop on, scour threads of interest.
As for a little about what I think of the forums, honestly, the community exploding on them was a surprise as they went from these quiet forums with a few oddballs - I part way called it in the lead up to DF with a remark that this could be what Toady's remembered for, but I never expected this. It's not a bad thing though - you get a few bad people in any community, but this one has a fair number of creative and helpful people at its core who try to see each others point of view and avoid escalating potential arguments.
In a way I miss what it was before, but I matured (to an extent) along with the forums, so that's just some misplaced nostalgia.

No, the patron saint of lurkers is Jifodus, with his nearly 2000 actual days of lurking over the course of ten years.  But 12 years of membership is pretty awesome too.
I believe he said at one point that he runs something to auto-refresh the page periodically so he remains on the active list - not that this takes away from that, no, a tool assisted lurker's someone who's serious about their lurking after all.
Comparatively, I'm just that crazy person that bursts out the closet in tattered rags, proclaims my existance, asks what year it is and retreats from the sky-orb's evil glare.
