I posted it to megaupload for now. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YUTDF8G0

It'll be a couple months before I can do more dev work on it.

I'm working on that next week. Right now the only way to do this is manually loading a smaller font.

If that is something you would like to do, I have 2 available on the downloads area http://www.legacyofawarlord.com/downloads/ , then set the name of the file you downloaded in the libtcod.cfg file. a 10x10px tile set and a 14x14px tile set.

One thing I have to admit... The hardest part about coding and producing something like this has been resisting the urge to play Dwarf fortress.

Other Games / Re: Should Gamers Have More Rights As Consumers?
« on: January 14, 2011, 07:38:22 pm »
I am trying to become a professional software developer and start a business. I'll offer my thought on this.

Personally I am trying a few methods to allow the consumers to take a pro-active approach in supporting the ongoing development of the game.

What I have observed is after investing a lot of time and resources the business needs to recover their costs or they need to start firing people or go bankrupt. I've learned that making these games is like putting a cart before a horse. Then try to sell everything in the cart so you can feed your family and everyone else who has a share of the effort. The sad thing is they won't tell you it is a cart of manure before you buy your share. They'll hype it up. We'll gift wrap this brown stuff and even let you MicroPayment the sludge on the bottom too!

What I think would be nice is if the gamers can take an active part in making the game and vote or voice their opinions. Then give feedback on what was put in (Like it or Hate it), then move on. Sponsor parts of the game. Then when the product is released the community of players that inspired, commented and created a community cause the game to thrive and grow. A Development on Demand with feedback and agility.

What it comes down to with the majority of publishers is that they have to research and plan what is fun. Not trusting a consumer because the consumer has no personal stake in the game's success. A consumer has a quick comment "that game sucked" and move on. 100,000 "that game sucked" , 20 awesomely skill programmers are fired and some fat cat director. A game ruined because the director's kid hated it and he had everyone change a once fun game.

Just my observations.

Seems pretty cool, but could you include a ReadMe with the controls or something, there doesn't seem to be any documentation.

The instructions are in the manual.pdf, an adobe acrobat file. What I gather is that this goes against roguelike conventions of a readme.txt . I'll textify and create a readme file. Thanks for the feedback.

To Savant: Is there any way to pause or switch over to a turn-based thing, or just slow it up or something? Real-time RLs are jarring for me :P

Apologies for the delay. I was at the DMV.  :'(

Hitting the space bar sets the game into strategic mode. You can issue commands to the troops or plan strategy while paused. Also if you need to take a break without the troops starving to death.

Very nice work. I actually like the effect the tiling gives. I can imagine finding a large wall of this stuff and be in awe like in a sea of adamantine.

Looks interesting. I'd try and get 10+ posts before waving your stuff around though.

Thanks for the interest.

Could you share why 10+ posts are needed to post in a forum? I'm normally not the type of person to speak unless I have something interesting to say in life or on a forum.

Little project i've been working on for a few months. It is in it's alpha state right now.

The goals of the project is to be a rogue like, procedurally generated, extreme modability with the capability of having MASSIVE battles. This weekend should be a decent release, I just updated the movement code and had a large battle between 350+ troops and 4,000 rats. Story on the blog: http://willraman.tumblr.com/

Also took down a dragon last night and fraps it. Need to squish that raw footage though. Also kind of boring with the effects/lighting engine offline for now (don't want to be held accountable for an epileptic episode).

Since this is alpha I haven't fully completed some portions, like effects, character generation and screen sizing. That being said the only way you'd know your attacking is watching the battle logs and screen sizing is handled by using a larger or smaller font, kind of like what dwarf fortress does.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to stop by my site, http://www.legacyofawarlord.com/ or the blog or forums.

http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/clibrary/ctime/strftime/ . I just used this today to make a quick logger for the game I'm making. cplusplus.com is full of c++ awesomeness. To print the time to the console, you can use cout. Put the data into a string then , cout << string.

Tilesets and Graphics / Re: Ironhand's Graphics Set (now for DF 0.31.16!)

Iron,

I'm developing a free roguelike and would like permission to use this font set.

Would you have any objection? Please PM me via this board if you'd like to open a dialogue.

Thanks

In response to render engines... Panda3d or ogre3d may be the way to go. My general observation is that Ogre3d seems a better renderer and has a lot of professional looking projects utilizing it. Yet it isn't a full suite (sound/controls/scripting/etc...) . Panda3d out of the virtual box can make a game.

both are free.

Nice planets, btw.

Keep them in a pit and a locked door. Maybe let 1 out to run around. Nice to have a meat source if things get rough. Same thing I tell my wife every now and then when I clean the cat box.
