"She enjoyed starting a fistfight recently."

I love the mental image of a Queen running through a corridor royally punching random people in the face.

I had a hunter hunting near a chasm.
While I was working on my fortress I suddenly got a message that the hunter was interrupted by a giant cave swallow.

I zoom to the location, where the hunter was lying uncouncious in a pool of blood with the swallow right on top of him. The hunter's throat was torn out already, his upper and lower body broken, and his right leg mangled.

I zoom back to my fortress and start the funeral preperations. I build a coffin and place it in an alcove...

... only I hadn't gotten a message of the hunter dying yet.

So I zoom back to the location. The hunter is still uncouncious, only the giant cave swallow is nowhere to be found.

To my surprise another dwarf gets to his location and takes him back to the fort and puts him in bed.
I can't believe it! His throat is torn out yet the bugger is still alive.

As he gets put in bed I get a message: "Hunter cancels rest: Interrupted by Giant Cave Swallow".
I squeek and quickly search around for any giant cave swallows in my fortress, but none are to be found. The hunter lies in bed, not resting, but alive.

I check his toughness, because this must be one tough son of a dwarf. He is normal tough, nothing special.
I know he'll probably never get up again, but I admire the little one's will to hold on to life, and kinda grow fond of him. I want him to survive.

Two seasons pass, and the dwarf is still alive, uncouncious still, but alive.
I can't imagine how he does that without a throat.

I then save and load quickly, to make a quicksave.

... upon loading the hunter dies instantly.

And.. eh.. I would just like to add that politeness gets you a long way.

Calling eachother 'faggot' and shouting 'fuck you' and 'douche' isn't going to get you anywhere but a forum fight.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Inexpliccable Flooding From Well
« on: August 26, 2008, 08:59:42 am »

I'm not sure I've ever seen a bucket which contained water, come to think of it... it's entirely possible that buckets don't "hold" water so much as they just enable dwarves to carry it, which would mean that when a bucket gets set down the water leaks straight out.  At any rate, I normally use canals for any significant amount of water-moving, so I don't have this problem.

I think you're onto something there. Mostly the water and the bucket are on the same tile or next to eachother and they appear in the normal walkways in the middle of nowhere.
My guess is that a dwarf was carrying water for refilling or wounded-care and he just got thirsty or hungry or something.

In true dwarven tradition they just fling the bucket with water on the ground and run off to get drunk.
It would appear the water gets flung out of the bucket this way.

Mhh.. this looks interesting!
Can I get a dwarf named Adaras with a crossbow? Other weapon is fine too. x3

Good luck! This will be an interesting read.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Sasquatch - Dabbling Negotiator

You could always dump one into a pit, and toss in all the easy-to-kill prey that you catch, for it to practice on.  Add a little water and you might get yourself a legendary swimmer sasquatch with high combat skills.

I just drowned my sasquatch.

Indeed... that's why this comment confused me:

In the end he was struck by melancholy so it wasn't much of a loss.

Especially since the purpose of the thread was to ask for a possible way to not make him die.

I sometimes have water in my hallways because dwarves seem to be messy with buckets.

I don't know how they do it, but sometimes they throw the contents over... or maybe trip over the bucket?

Another theory is that dwarves throw away stagnant water that's in a bucket when they need to care for wounded.

I just have no idea, but they sling water all over the place, and there's almost always a bucket nearby.

The following is a test, DO NOT click on the following picture. You have been warned.

Noooo! Why?! I was warned and everything. T_T

Also... isn't melancholy bad? ... mine tend to go suicidal because of it.

Hmm, i begin to wonder if "sparring" and "patrols" , or even "wrestling" have the same meaning in human and dwarf languages.
It could explain that amount of babies that comes from my military squads.

It would also explain all the clothes lying around in my barracks...

But...the blood? :-[
i think you won't really know ...

I think you don't really WANT to know.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: siege difficulty levels.
« on: August 26, 2008, 04:07:07 am »
Somethings that help make sieges more difficult and are easy to do are:
1. No ranged weapons, and this includes siege weapons. If you have any dwarves in your military, they must be using some sort of melee weapon or be wrestlers.
2. No moats/drawbridges. Alternatively, give goblins the [SWIMS_INNATE] tag
3. No completely enclosed fortresses with walls. You must have at least one spot open at all times.

And last but not least...
4. No traps, this includes all weapon, stonefall, spike, and cage traps. Exceptions to this rule are traps that flood the entranceway with water, magma, or cause the ceiling to collapse. (You can change this to allow cage traps with intent to not catch goblin invaders, but just wild animals to tame.

I tried this...

Nothing. Survived.

And yes, those are two parts of the same siege.
My dwarves never had a chance.

Ore veins mostly.

They screw up my plans enormously because I have an addiction of digging the whole thing out... which leaves a long and completely useless rough and ugly pathway halfway through the mountain.
There's just so little you can do with it. You can't make rooms from them and it's too ugly for a hallway.

The loooooong and ugly roaaaad. (That leads to nowhere...).

Dwarves don't stare, they admire.

Which doesn't make it any less awkward.

While I like the idea of airships, gunpowder and especially steam-technology, another part of me screams to keep this game free from it. The option for more advanced (flying) vehicles would still be nice though.
And especially working with steam could be fun, it would give a thousand more uses to magma and water and interesting constructions... Which is just very dwarfy.

As for it not fitting in the setting of DF: Partly true, I guess...
Though guns/machines and swords can fit together pretty well nonetheless (Think Warcraft, which is mostly medieval but gnomes and dwarves have advanced steam-technology and guns): It fits pretty okay and doesn't ruin the more medieval aspect of the game...
Although there is also a high magic percentage here. High fantasy, I'm guessing.
The setting of DF is mostly what the developers make from it though. As far as I've seen there aren't any laid out rules.. it just establishes itself along the way to the developers content.

As for guns... Somebody else once noted in a similiar thread that crossbows are already so powerful that there isn't much a gun would improve over it.
Think about it.. Crossbows shoot fast, and are very deadly... Not to mention easy to produce.

What could a oldish gun/blunderbuss do beyond this?
It would only be a downgrade. There wouldn't be much visual/audial change either.
