DF Suggestions / Re: Multiple stockpile take froms
« on: October 17, 2009, 08:47:01 am »
Yeah OK. That makes a lot of sense. However, as the OP says, it would be a lot easier and more efficient (certainly the way I tend to end up having things work) if a stockpile could have multiple other stockpiles taking from it.
Could it be as simple as having the destination stockpile generate the job? Maybe not, but I feel I have to put this one out there.

I've been out of the loop for a while, but has there been anything further on this?

Hm, that sounds interesting. What other ads do you get? Or websites you use.
It's Google's adsense technology.  It bases ads off the text on the site you're currently viewing.  Allows for those amusing ads as in OP, but in the Gmail case, is based off of emails, not websites.  He has the forums email him updates to threads, so Adsense is seeing that and thinking he likes smelters/metal.

Yeah exactly. The fact that I have more DF emails than most other topics these days is what made me laugh the most. Clearly DF must now be all that is important in my life. If google says it so so, it must be true!  ;D

When I saw this I just had to start a new post!

For those of you that have used gmail, (presumably most) you know those little google ads that are based on key words from your more recent emails? Well I get this forum to email me updates on some threads. Here are some of the ads I've been seeing lately:

Books on Blacksmithing
books and how-to videos, inquiring minds want to know!
www.blacksmithsjournal.com

Auburn Furnace Services
We Know Smelters Inside Out Results First Furnace Projects
www.auburn1.com

Gas Forges

You can smooth metal without the use of a Furnace or Smelter, it just takes FOREVER!!!

You use Rocks, sand, or even metal files. (Flint is a good rock to use I think...)

However all those tools are at the Forge and not the Smelter (Hense why you don't make Coins at the Smelter)

If Toady ever lets you make a Forge without an Anvil... It should just take a long time to forge one using incorrect tools.

Yes! thats what I was trying to say earlier. Forges without anvils could either ( as you said) work slower, or only allow making a limited subset of items. Either way an anvil-less forge would be crippled, but still able to make you an anvil eventually.

If you give your military full plate a shields as soon as you draft them, sparring accidents are drastically reduced. In Quietshakes I have lost 0 dwarves to sparring accidents of any kind (although all three of my hammerdwarves  ended up with a broken leg for a season or two.) Remember, plate mail only covers the upper body, in order for full protection you need:

Helm ("This is a helmet! You wear it to protect your head from goblin spears!")
Plate Mail ("Like the bark of a tree, plate can be worn to ward goblins whips)
Chain Mail("Like the iron in your blood, chain mail can be worn under plate to stop goblin swords")
Gauntlets("Use this to catch goblin bolts so you can shoot them back at them!")
Greaves ("This is a cup. It menaces with spikes of
  • . If you don't want to lose your chance to have children to a goblin axe you should wear them!")

Low Boots ("These are boots. Low, like you, they keep your ankles safe from hammers and maces.")
Shield ("Wear this and learn to use it well, for some day I will throw you out on the field before me to catch arrows. Failure to do so will result in your spleen, left eye, liver, pancreas, heart, and left lung getting punctured in a single shot.)

greaves are actually shin armour. Which raises the question as to whats up with having high boots and greaves at the same time..

Well, I guess the million dollar question here is:  how DO you forge an anvil without an anvil?

"Technological advance is an inherently iterative process. One does not simply take sand from the beach and produce a Dataprobe. We use crude tools to fashion better tools, and then our better tools to fashion more precise tools, and so on. Each minor refinement is a step in the process, and all of the steps must be taken."

Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang, Datalinks.

As I was reading I could hear the original audio from Alpha Centauri playing in my head  ;D

Edit:
On reflection, I've no idea if that was the original source of that quote. The game may be quoting someone else for all I know

Second Edit:
Actually, I'd say its originally from Alpha Centauri, as I doubt 'dataprobes' are referred to much by ppl in RL.

Do you really need an anvil to make anvils?

How about forges without anvils can only make things that you would cast, (ie not things you would bang against an anvil while making like swords etc).
So you could only make statues, coins etc and... anvils.

DF Suggestions / Re: Return of the Guild (Masters)

I like some of these ideas. I especially like how it would allow new game features to appear over time, thus smoothing out the learning curve a bit.

However it seems to me that the idea you have for mandates needs a little work.
For a start, if you aren't using a particular guild much, having mandates appear to keep them busy is a dumb idea in my opinion. It would be annoying for a start. There is usually a reason when I stop producing as much of a certain good. Although, if the point is to increase difficulty, then OK. But I still think it would be more on the side of being just annoying rather than adding to gameplay.
Secondly, having a guild that you aren't using complain by going on strike, probably wouldn't bother me a whole lot. Possibly losing the GM benefit might though.

When it comes to dealing with dwarves with no work to do and therefore no income, I think a more detailed economic model that allowed dwarves to work for their own ends and buy/sell from other dwarves, as well as work for the government (you) would cover this better. (my 2c).

Perhaps instead they blockade another guild that is getting all the work?
If they striked for a really long time it could become an issue.

DF General Discussion / Re: How do I update DF?
« on: August 20, 2008, 05:23:40 pm »
He said you can copy the whole save folder. Read.
1. Download the new version and unzip it.

2. If you wish to use a save from the old version, go to the data/save folder (in the old DF's folder) and copy the appropriate region folder. Past it in the data/save folder of the new DF.

You don't even need to copy and/or backup your save. Since the zipped DF files doesn't include a save folder noting will be overwritten. Only files with identical names will be overwritten.
He's talking about unzipping the new onto the old, in that the new won't overwrite your saves.
NO.  Do not, EVER, extract the new onto the old.  It causes ALL SORTS of issues in the raws (including "Wizard fortress")
Extract the new version to a new folder and move the save folder over.

Huh. And here was me doing just that with the last 5 versions and never noticing anything wrong.. Oh well, now I know.

Yeah I disagree as well.

Firstly, I think that it is very appropriate that its hard at first and get easier. Spending 2 years training dwarfs and digging a fortress should make life easier than when you start to live in a random spot in the wilderness.

Secondly, I think its also appropriate that the economy gets mentioned. As the good little capitalist that I am, I firmly beleive that when the economy is fixed/completed that this will all be dealt with. Legendary dwarves will produce more in the same time using the more raw materials in less time, thereby earning more. With their extra income, they will buy larger amounts and more expensive goods. So a legendary dwarf will end up consuming more, as they get more skilled.

And yes, if you decide to add more currency to your economic system, it should result in inflation, if the econmy is working. that way you can't just cheat, instead have to levy taxes or something.
