So I'm missing a child - and no, I don' think I have any vampires because I've turned migrants off, and its been several years of the fort running.

Anyway I left my PC for a bit, and came back (so I have no idea what precisely happened.) And glancingly perused through my unit list - whereupon I noticed a dwarf child status was "caged" in yellow.

At this point instead of focusing on his name and identifying him, I gave a groan and set about trying to find the offending cage and let him out - I assumed he must have fallen into a cage trap (I don't know where or how - there weren't even any cave ins)

A little while later though - I can't find him in the caged creatures list.

On top of that, a little while later I get a "dwarf child is missing report",

Has anyone else had something similar happen to them? Is there any way I can find the missing people? I'm not averse to DF Hackery or the likes - Anything at all.

Because the mystery is now driving me nuts. I have a weird who dunnit/ who dun what? going on in my fort and I can't begin to understand how to unravel it.

Heh heh, would be amusing - but fortunately that problem is solved - my current fort is decently protected, and I send my militia to constantly kill and maim wild life so that I get lucky and get some new animals to train my chosen ones. Plus no invaders currently due to the ongoing mega project.

It is an absurdly complex plan all the same. :D.

168
My current fort is a special one, with a single special dwarf.

I guess I'd spend my time making sure that the tasks get done smoothly, and generally stay out of the way.

Once the purpose of the fort is done, I would proceed to create a dwarven society of super soldiers - and then slowly start building new forts and constantly increasing the dwarf population.

I would then begin training a special group of doctors and hammerers on the correct response to handle were beats and vampires.

I would train incessantly - covering almost all the tasks possible - from metal crafting to shearing to pump operation to wood making to carpentry. Legendary everything. Then legendary social skills and finally legendary weapon skills.

Then with my new hunters of the secret watch, I would trap a were beast, and a vampire.

I would then first succumb to the were beast curse.

Then I would train the legion of the bulwark. I would build a fighting force capable of holding me down during the period I change forms.

The rest of the time I would help produce enough material to ensure the economic output of my mountain homes is sufficient to constantly afford to train enough cannon fodder and real militia.

This will go on for nearly 50 - 70 in game years.

I want about 6 outposts. Each producing 25 million dwarf bucks of currency a month. Attracting FBs and dragons and all sorts of creatures and unending sieges of goblins.

All of whom will be captured first, and if necessary - killed.

The great dragons and beasts will be tamed. I will set up breeding programs for their offspring which will last a 1000 years.

The dwarves will tame every creature on the planet, and know how to maim/incapacitate/trap/obliterate any others.

The sponges will be used to train my recruits. The goblins will train my half-guards. The high guards will stay in danger rooms.

The best of the best will train under me. They will all have at least 5 skills in legendary before they even begin weapon training.

OF these - I will take the top 6 and were curse them. They will be my generals.

We will subjugate and bring peace to ALL the sentient creatures. I have no ill will with the elves or humans, because I have no time.

I will buy peace with them, throwing masterwork baubles in their faces. I will buy their allegiance till they ride with me to battle.

Once this fighting force is ready - I will cleanse the land of all necromancer towers. Any necromancer who resists - dies. The others, become part of the Magi Arcane.

Finally. After a 100 years. I will make my will known to my legions. We will sacrifice a mountain to Armok to seek his blessings, we will pour the rivers of fire and convert a sea into obsidian in his name. A 1000 dark creatures we will sacrifice seeking his endowments.

Then and only then, will we attack the unclean lands.

We shall make the half-guards and high guards drink the blood of a 1000 vampires. They will be sent first to cleanse the land of  undead.

My generals and I will follow, along with the Magi and the Bulwark army. At every stage we will clean each and every tree, level every mountain and flood every river with magma.

The evil lands will be *flattened*.

Any that fall in the attempt, shall be raised by my Magi first, the undead will die to my vampires. The husks will fall to my shield bulwarks and generals.

My engineers will build a roof over every inch we cover - lest the gloom rain cause havoc amongst my super trained army.

There will be MANY losses. Our worst nightmares being the generals or I getting husked, or the Bulwarks being husked.

Even with this fighting force, I don't know if I will prevail. If all else fails - I will drink a draught of vampire blood at the last instant - and being undead fight the husk thralls myself.

If we succeed. I will decree that the magma taps be opened, and a flood of magma open up and cover the cursed lands.

Finally I shall create a dome to encompass each scar on the planet.

I will then disband my legions, kill my generals and remove myself from living memmory. I will then guard these domes and ensure nothing ever escapes.

I will live forever, and watch as the world reverts back to a time when it had no great purpose, and an age of relative innocence and brutality.

So be it.

(Holy shit thats long.)

My eggs haven't hatched though - I've had to forbid them to prevent dwarves from constantly stealing them, is that why?

I have a clutch of 8 which havent hatched in more than 2 seasons.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Isn't dungeon master supposed to be gone?
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:33:57 am »
Hey.

After playing a bit i've ended up with a barony.

Which has the dungeon master noble position. (it may have come pre barony though - don't remember precisely)

Wasn't that position removed? Does anyone else have this?

Kod KOd - what PC specs are you working on?

Sphalerite - there used to be a thread on someone who succesfully managed to train war carp - It was an amazingly crazy feat, but it could be done.

Have things changed since then? I don't remember any patch notes specifically changing the way job cancellations got affected by water.

EDIT: here it is: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=15371.0

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Animal Training update
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:37:17 pm »
Hey, some science on training, on the lines of Frisiandude.

I have an unkindness of ravens trapped in cages in my animal stock pile. Staus in the z stock menu read wild.

I tasked any trainer to train them.

The trainers took plump helmets and fed the birds.

Birds switched to a semi trained state.

Having no use for them, I let them be.

After a while I got a message stating that raven has returned to a wild state. With the game pausing.

They were still in the cage so no harm done.

I retasked people to train them and the rangers proceeded to do exactly that.

After another occasion of the, reverting, they've reached a higher state of domestication. Not near ,y computer so I can't check what it's called.

So, synopsis, Tldr:

1) you can train animals if they lie in cages, this may be the optimal method since they -

2) revert! Animals revert to a wild state. Why and how is yet to be determined.

3) the more they get trained, after reversions, the more they seem to get domesticated.

Regards 3, it's possible that this is just my rangers getting better at it, or more training getting them further domesticated.

I could have genned a world, but what can I say, I want to beat my head against a wall.

That said, the individual column mining techniques is possible, but its excruciatingly slow.

I recall a particularly amazing map where he had carved all the Z layers below the ground into a cavern = before cavern layers were introduced!

I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience in mass mining out of those columns.

176
How do you mine out all the annoying stalactites in your cavern layers, without causing massive depopulation due to cave ins?

I remember discussions on using stairways as the optimal method, is this still true?

177
The thread.. lives O_o?

Quick question - can we mod the dwarves to trade dragon eggs (after removing the pet exotic tag) in a pregenned world?

178
wait why cant we find dark towers?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: the art of making holes in rivers
« on: March 09, 2012, 05:55:27 am »
The cave in method to making holes is pretty known - it was mentioned on the forums a while back too for various odd purposes - Most common discovery of this was when someone ended up collapsing a roof by mistake, and it fell through every floor tile all the way to the bottom, creating a sun roof and usually a lot of dead dwarves.
