DF Gameplay Questions / Re: waterwheel isn't waterwheeling
« on: June 20, 2008, 03:47:14 am »
Considering they can -only- be made out of wood, probably not :P

also, nevermind about that particular waterwheel, goblins...again! But I'm still looking for general tips on getting waterwheels going. So pepetual motion devices can be started by having a dwarf operate the pump manually?

My setup was
wPG
W..A
WGA
W....

where G is a gear, W is the wheel, w is brook, P is a pump and A is an axle. I know it was connected because the whole system was bleating for 35 power. I did hollow out the brook as well, so it's not that. I grabbed a bloke to run the pump and it didn't seem to do anything.

How the heck do I start waterwheels? There's lots of methods demonstrated on the wiki, but I wasn't able to get one to start producing power. It just sat there going 'give me 15 power'.

I placed it over a brook after hollowing out the surface, did nothing. Do you have to bump start them or am I going to need a windmill just to get the blasted thing moving? How about for a pepetual motion device? The water is static until the whole lot starts moving.

You could try adding letters or icons to one corner to denote their profession, or a square of the color that DF makes them, might help distinguish professions, besides little additions to make them different to look at. These look beautiful though.

Sounds like your nobles need introducing to mr very deep pit as well if they keep making unreasonable demands.

I thought I had but I must have changed something in the mean time.

It works!

Okay, I have now and it honestly does work now. Thanks for your help all of you, and I apologise if I came across as impatient  :(

If anyone wants to add these, please do.

Also, Sean what screen size setup are you using? I really don't like the oblong characters of the default resolution I'm using.

I thought I was somewhere completely safe. There was no evil creatures on the list, the lava was sealed away in a cavern and no goblins or kobolds had poked their heads out on the civ list yet.

Then I get :

Mountain Goat has become beserk!
Mc Miner has been struck down.
Mountain Goat is no longer beserk.

I was then chasing three of the bloody things around inside my fortress. So I drafted everybody, waited for them to regroup and rushed them. I took out the named goat and one of his collegues. The other one escaped outside and ran a good distance so I let it go.

The reaction now uses thread, which doesn't stack and is stored in bins. I took twenty rolls of thread. I also have a fortress that physically made about 35. Neither could be persuaded to smelt them.

To double check, this is the current reaction :

[REACTION:WEED_IRON_MAKING]
[NAME:make iron bars from weed]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:10:THREAD:NO_SUBTYPE:PLANT:WEED_IRON]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:IRON]
[FUEL]

and this is the weed:

[MATGLOSS_PLANT:WEED_IRON]
[TILE:'i'][COLOR:0:0:1]
[NAME:iron weed][NAME_PLURAL:iron weeds]
[VALUE:2]
[DRINK:iron brew:0:0:1]
[DRINKVALUE:2]
[SEED:4:0:1]
[GENPOWER:2]
[THREAD]
[AUTUMN][WINTER]
[FREQUENCY:100]
[CLUSTERSIZE:5]
[BIOME:NOT_FREEZING]
[PREFSTRING:hard leaves]
[WET][DRY]

The spinning Iron spear strikes The Guard in the head!
It is pierced through entirely!
The Iron spear has lodged firmly in the wound!
Athrab Rushantawki, Guard has been shot and killed.

The epic thing about this was it was a throwaway shot, the only unused spear I had in my backpack and I hurled it at a guard I could see on the edge of my vision, in spite of several others closer/fighting with me. He was absolutely miles away as well.

Three, one I brought with me and two I designated when the first guy didn't wake up and do his job.

This is about my most epic fail ever.

Playing adventure mode as a hydra after an absolute killing spree as a tentacle demon. I was trying to assault a goblin fortress, and I was getting annoyed about wandering around trying to find a way through the mountains.

I figured, how much harm could I come to if I just...say...hopped off that cliff there. I was a size 20 hydra, I could take a short fall.

You slam into an obstacle!
Your fourth head is mangled!
You have been stunned!
Your nose, fourth head has been broken!
Your throat, fourth head has been blackened!
Your neck, fourth head has been crippled!
Your brain, fourth head has been crippled!
Your fifth head is mangled!
Your left eye, fifth head has been blackened!
Your neck, fifth head has been crippled!
Your brain, fifth head has been broken!
Your right rear leg is mangled!
Your second head is mangled!
Your nose, second head has been badly bruised!
Your brain, second head has been crippled!
Your fifth neck is mangled!
Your first head is mangled!
You have been stunned again!
Your nose, first head has been mangled!
Your neck, first head has been broken!
Your first head is smashed into the body, an unrecognizable mass!
You have been stunned again!
Your right eye, first head has been blackened!
Your left eye, first head has been blackened!
Your left front leg is mangled!
Your upper body is mangled!
You are having trouble breathing!
Your right lung has been pierced!
Your left lung has been pierced!
Your heart has been pierced!
Your liver has been broken!
You give in to pain.

And to add insult to injury... I found an effing goblin.

The Guard hacks at You in the left rear leg with her Iron halberd!
The shot glances away.
The Guard hacks at You in the first neck with her Iron halberd!
The shot glances away.
You have bled to death.

Epic. Fail.

Definately had the thread, fuel and a smelter. I've not tried it through the manager though. I'll try that maybe.

Ok, I added it in the manager.

It shows up on the manager and the smelter itself.

However there's no job on the job list for it, and certainly nobody has bothered to lift a finger to attend to it. No cancellations, nobody really seems to care at all and most of them have 'no job' inlcuding the three that have furnace duty designated.

Mind you, the same thing happened when I ordered some mechanisms, what's going wrong there?

The flying Iron arrow strikes You in the seventh head!
It is pierced!
You have been stunned!
Your right eye, seventh head has been poked out!
Your left eye, seventh head has been poked out!
Your nose, seventh head has been badly pierced!
Your throat, seventh head has been poked out!
Your neck, seventh head has been pierced!
You shake The Guard around by the right lower leg!
A chunk is torn away!
The Guard hacks at The ogre in the left lower arm with her Iron battle axe!
The shot glances away.
You give in to pain.
You fall over.

There was a bit more of the guard missing me, and another one tusseling with the ogre somewhere else.

The Guard hacks at The ogre in the lower body with her Iron battle axe!
The lower body flies off in a bloody arc!
Udulnastrisp, ogre has been struck down.
The flying Iron arrow strikes You in the right rear leg!
It is pierced!
You regain consciousness.
You bite The Guard in the head!
It is broken!
The Guard's throat has been torn out!
The Guard's neck has been badly torn!
You latch on firmly!
The flying Iron arrow strikes You in the first neck!
The shot glances away.
You give in to pain.
The Guard gives in to pain.
Nemen Aguvturot, Guard has bled to death.
You have bled to death.

I didn't even get to see the git shooting arrows at me.

Oh and playing as a hydra is fun, but you can't open doors! ;) It's not as easy as it sounds. I went through three hydras in 20 minutes, two of them put down by the same pikeman who I never did get revenge on. Those guys are hard. They butcher packs of wolves without a single scratch though. I had fun spitting wolf chunks at harpies afterwards too. The mouths got clogged up with all sorts of chunks.

The first death was a bit silly, I was fighting on the top level of the pub, then a peasant threw me off of it onto the floor below. I think that's what happened, either that or I dodged off of it. The pikeman came in then and took full advantage of my stunned state. Piked me in a brain and had his way for a while until I bled to death.

Second time around I met him in face on combat and missed a few times before getting piked in one of my heads, that put me down long enough to  put his pike through five of my necks and another head. He then decided to twist it about in my tail until I died. The pikeman even boasted about killing my first incarnation before he attacked.

The last battle was just a random guard, I only had him left, I had butchered about four people trying to find that damn archer. EXTRAVISION was no help. Having seven bite attacks was hilarous though.
