Oh and... if you're going to do any editing, make a copy of the file first. Just in case.

You'd need to edit the creatures_standard.txt somewhere in data. You  would need to remove the [BUTCHERABLE_NONSTANDARD] tag from the creature entries you want to be able to butcher.

HOWEVER :

Removing or adding tags does require an entirely new world however, so it wouldn't help your current fortress. It would just prevent the game from loading afterward, most likely. So don't do this unless you're happy about creating a brand new world.

It is possible to butcher them, but the tag represents creatures your dwarves wouldn't be inclined to chop up after killing. Removing the tag simply makes them fair game for hunting and butchery. Personally I've always wanted to try elf tallow biscuits, just keep a tight reign on your hunters when the traders come by.

presumably you could even incite cannibalism, but that is -really- getting into murky territory. There are apparently massive unhappy thoughts for eating someone they knew/loved.

At least this is what I've come to understand from poking around in the forums and the wiki.

Grab some useless little layabout who you can stand to loose and send him hunting instead, see if he will. He might even do alright for himself.

That might be the issue, try sending him hunting -without- the crossbow, to see if that makes a difference. My hunters generally used their fists. Which is actually okay as long as you're not hunting Cougars.

You just allow him to do the hunting job in the job allocations. (when you press l to allow/disallow jobs)

Once that's enabled, he'll zoom off and start hunting, as it's a high priority job and works just like fishing. He'll carry on murdering wildlife and dragging it back until you don't allow him to anymore.

That is bizzare. My hunters are usually over-zealous.

I loaded the map for the first time and first thing I get is.

*Rognar has become enraged*
*A deer has died*
*Rognar is no longer enraged*

Try turning hunting on and off a few times, and check if you're allowing your dwarves to go outside. I'm not sure which overrides which.

I'm going to go through the obvious here, so don't think I'm insulting your intelligence.

1) Is Hunting actually enabled? I had a rogue woodcutter for ages until I realised woodcutting had been turned off somehow. He'd dumped his axe in the middle of the food pile.

2) Are there things for him to hunt? He should still go out and wander around anyway.

3) Is he just idle or is he sleeping/eating/etc

4) Is he currently drafted? You describe him as a marksdwarf so he sounds like he's been at military training at some point.

If I understood this right, you're trying to raise water UP a channel to a pool above the level of the brook? Is this an underground brook we're dealing with here?

#######X#
#######C#
#######C#
RR#####C# - water level z-7
C######C#
C######C#
CCCCCCCC#
#########

If I have understood you right, this is what you're doing. Where RR is your river, and the water level is as I showed, with the empty channel continuing upwards.

The pool won't fill like this, not without pumps. However, were you to build a well at the top of that channel, (at the X) it should work just fine.

Wouldn't flying kittens in this situation hurt the dwarf? I gather that flying items do a fair amount of damage.

This might be an obvious (and stupid) question, but have you designated the brook as a water source using zones? (i button)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stockpile barrel problem.
« on: April 02, 2008, 10:58:00 am »
Do you have somewhere else to store empty barrels? I noticed my empty barrels were stuffed into all my food storage areas after I disallowed them from being stored in my furniture store. I re-allowed them again and the dwarves shovelled all the empties across to furniture again. It might just be your dwarves being tidy. Try making an empty barrel furniture store if you have some sort of storage lack.

If this isn't the case and you have pleanty of legitimate furniture storage then it is possibly a bug.

Or try laying some cage traps, you could end up with a rather interesting zoo.

I read somewhere in the wiki that laying a glass floor over an exposed cavern seals it up, but still has it counting as outside. I've no idea if you could do this over several levels, and obviously you need sand to make glass.

How long do trees take to grow anyway?
