Nenjin's comments relate to why I expect the real money AH to be a bit of a flop.  You would be paying to no longer have to play the game.

Good question, but I think this explains it best from what I read so far:  (for me)
As Tycho of Penny Arcade said: The game's a piņata. You click on monsters to make them explode with loot, then you get the loot. If someone just wants the candy, they can buy the candy, the piņata becomes secondary to the whole pursuit if you're just wanting the candy.

Problem is a lot of people bought a piņata, bought the candy, and then realized they don't need the piņata anymore. If the auction house hadn't caught on, the piņata would still be fun, or if something was still even mildly obtainable without real funds. But the simple fact of the matter is that they've given the community a way to entirely bypass the game, and then made the bypassing actually necessary to succeed past a certain level.

I guess i was looking at it backwards, instead of the AH being a flop, it was a great success, making the game a flop instead.  Funny how easily we are enticed into ruining our own enjoyment of something.

I think the plot mechanism change is for the best.  Before you could plow through a family in a matter of days without much risk of your plot being found out.  Now it is slowed down a bit, and you have to have the plot active over a period of time, where it can be found out or compromised. There seems to be a bit more variance in how it turns out too, you can succeed and be exposed, or you can fail without anyone finding out.  I got a kinslayer in my Norwegian game when I successfully took out my grandson, but was ratted out by the snake handler.

You forgot option #4,

Kill Finn and his sons, Marry Finn's wife to Mael-Morda or his heir if he has one already.

Well kinslayer isn't all that bad for a long reign ruler.  You essentially give up a portion of your long reign bonus, it will be no worse than it will be once you turn the kingdom over to a short reign heir.  It may even give you the chance to revoke a few of the more rebellious nobles before you go through the succession.

I am facing a similar problem with my Norwegian game, my second son is more fit to rule, and my first son died in the crusades while running down fleeing peasents.

I needed to clean out the grandchildren, but their spymaster loved them.  The easy solution for me was to grant their spymaster a county, forcing him to leave their court.  The new spymaster was happy to go along with my plots.

a grandson... that is actually a brilliant idea! I hadn't thought of it!

well let us know how it turns out, we're all invested in your character's dynasty now

I suppose you could also try to get a bloodline grandson to inherit.   Invite the lustiest young courtiers of the world to your court and then force them  into matrilineal marriages with your daughters.  Untitled male courtiers are pretty easy to convince to move to your court compared with unmarried women.  Once in your court they won't refuse the mat. marriage.

I *think* that your grandson will inherit before your brother.

Also be wary when marrying off male heirs, often times you'll get a counter offer of a matrilineal marriage while they are considering the normal one.  You can refuse the matrilineal, and in a few days they will accept the normal one.

You can start intrigue events against your brother's wives even if they don't show up in the plots and ambitions list.  Go to their character's page and under their portrait to the left you can select a kill plot.  You'll need to find backers in their own court though.  This can be made easy if you befriend their spymaster, as they tend to provide a ton of plot power.  This should free them up for regular marriages. Not sure if they will return to your court or stay in their wife's.

The banshing/exuction mechanics have to be more fleshed out. I was having a quick Norway game and a duchy rebelled. Sent out an army to meet it and my son who was leading the battle was killed! After I won the war all I could do was revoke a single title. That bastard killed my son, he was a great guy. Wonder traits and stats, beloved by all. I was considering killing off my eldest son so he could take the throne.  :-[

You should be able to do additional bad things to that duke, especially if you've still got them in prison, you just have to take an opinion hit for it.

Honestly, playing CK without even a little bit of roleplaying seems pretty meh to me.

Completely agree, in my current game the son of the aforementioned Norwegian count who dabbled in catharism became a cynical, wroth, and cruel King of Norway who worked his ass off for the first half of his reign securing the duchies of iceland(via marriage), orkney, moray, and vestland for his indulgent wastrel of an heir.  After he labored tirelessly to raise Norwegian Crown Laws to High authority, he was finally able to institute primogeniture succession laws.

His heir, now the duke of iceland, and the now guaranteed future king of Norway revolted, outraged by the change in law.  Bjorn the Great, utterly disgusted by his son's disrespect and idiocy marched to iceland himself, captured his son and summarily executed him for treason.

What I really like about this game is that it lets you play "incorrectly" without losing.

Lesson of the day: When you're some nobody count, jockying for the position as king's heir, and your bff bishop confides in you about this great new religion he's forming....  DON'T DO IT

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anyone play "pure" DF?

Make seeds and booze uncookable

Why not just use the ingame menu to toggle off cooking for these?

I enjoy playing vanilla DF, but actually literally(not in the non-literal usage) get migranes from the harsh color contrast on new monitors, so i make do with a muted tileset most of the time.  Having been around DF for awhile I can't express enough how useful it is to know how to play the game vanilla.  I've seen far too many utilities discontinued to want to be reliant on any of them.

Letting go of the micro manage lets you enjoy the haphazardness of the game.  But then i'm the type who enjoys just having an open hallway into the fort for an entrance; I can't remember the last time I built a trap in DF.  That said, I know some people play the game to have hyper efficient, impregnable cubes.  To each his own.

I really enjoy the game, I just don't think the real money AH will be successful.  Part of the replayability of the series is diminished, with no permanence to your character other than gender.  As it stands I have no reason to ever level another wiz, where in diablo 2 you would level a new character to try a different build.

Not sure if its a bad thing, it just pushes all of the entertainment available into your first character.  It was very disappointing as a young lad to get into nightmare as a thorns palidan and have the game chuckle and say nope.
