It greatly amuses me that corpses can get lodged in wounds. I beat a wolf to death with my fists and picked up its corpse, only to come across a cougar and lodge the corpse in the cougar's wound...

*Speculates on how this is possible*

I downloaded the version of dwarf fortress with this graphic mod attached, and when I started to play it kicked me out of full screen to window, which my older versions did anyway, but for some reason the window was cutting off the right side so I couldn't see it. Any ideas on what's going wrong?

I had an issue with the pre-package as well, but mine was far less... describable. I tried to run DF, but the screen kept fluctuating, constantly, keeping me from seeing the world generation well, due too the initial menu beinc consistantly overlayed. It seemed as though ever moment of graphics got stored and was trying to display at the same time.

When I tried to apply the graphics alone to a vanilla copy, I suffered the same issues as Reverend Josiah.

I have checked, and it is not an issue with resolution.

As I recall, the magma is dumped from above, and is then allowed to fall through the grates.

The drawbridges are there merely tro keep the magma from settling on the floor tile on which they sit.

I don't know about the gates (probably doors, considering they have no lag, as compared to floodgates, which reqire 100 steps to activate).

Everything is effectively explained, already, if you would be willing to read the previous posts.

When dropping molded forms, I suggest dropping as a solid block, and mining out the desired interior.

"Life is, in a word, sacrifice."

How profound.

I am quite curious what prompted the "Hello odd misshapen beast." thing myself...

DF Modding / Re: Using the game for a D&D game map?
« on: March 04, 2010, 05:03:49 pm »
I found that DF maps would get a touch repetative for D&D. I find the only useful method would be to use the worldmaps for certain things. It takes way too long to make a fortress for such a purpose (lest you actually get fortress images from other players, most of which are not designed for adventuring).

Either way, I wish you the best of luck into your ventures as a DM! I almost enjoy DMing more than playing as a character (mostly because I dislike the DMing style of most people).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Pipe Tower

I suggest something a little more complicated, but virtually guaranteed to work.

1) Drain all but the lowest level of the magma pipe. (What you do with the magma at that point is your concern)

2) Cool the magma on the lowest level of the magma pipe, thus forming a solid foundation.

3) Channel a hole in the foundation, as to allow the pipe to re-fill itself (this will take some time, but you can use the magma drained from the pipe, lest you decide not to save it, to speed the process of refilling).

4) When the magma has filled to the next level, cool the magma, channeling out the sides to the desired shape.
4x) If you want a more interesting, and likely less time consuming method, fill the pipe entirely with magma. Cool magma on the highest level, in the shape of which you wish your tower to be, and allow the cooled magma to "collapse", and settle on the foundation. (If using this method, ensure your levels do not collide with the sides of the pipe, as to allow the level to proceed to the founation unobstructed.)

This method allows for the structure to be natural stone.

Heh, I am glad for the correction.

Yay for being tired (I don't always do enough research when I am tired).

I thank you for the correction (I am not being sarcastic, I actually enjoy being corrected when wrong).

Nah, you know, in American English, it's spelled Aluminum, but the right way to spell it is Aluminium. Or so I think.

Nope. Only the british spell it that way, and even then, only some british. It is much along the lines of saying nuclear as "nuceular", as George Bush does.

Ironically, spelling things like colour and labour as "color" and "labor" is chiefly from the U.S. (U.S. against the world), whereas spelling aluminum as "aluminium is chiefly from the U.K. (U.K. against the world).

Amusing.

I've Traveled with a mortal wound to both brain and heart, but I can't remember if it was in normal 40d or in 40d16. I don't think that makes much difference, though.

The water appears to dampen the fall.

I am amused at the double-entendra, which is most likely unintended.

Yes, I am also curious as to the damping ratio of air-to-water. This was an interesting experiment.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Underground Roads
« on: February 25, 2010, 06:52:52 am »
If you are too far into the underground road, you may have to continue until you find a chasm.

DO NOT JUMP INTO THE CHASM!

When you reach a chasm, stand on the center of the bridge and check the (W)eather. If it gives you weather information (not "There is no semblance of sunlight here"), (T)ravel. This should work. It has worked with every surface-exposed chasm I have ever found while traversing the depths. I only survived because I raided a town for food and filled my backpack with water before doing so...

I hope this helps.

I once stabbed a kobold guard in the head with a stack of 30 copper arrows. It broke his head, poked out one eye, damaged his brain, and lodged. Then he got up and tried to escape.

Indeed. Attacking with stacks of arrows or bolts scares me. The damage done is often in the realm of insta-kill, though there is the occasion where some guard manages to survive brain damage.

As to the question, I believe that person may just have a really high toughness. Otherwise... I am clueless as to how survival is possible with a terminally damaged heart (at least it wasn't severed [not possible, but hey, I can joke]).

From my experience, I could never leave an encounter from the same tile in which I started, lest I had many moves between start and finish. Normally, a good bit of walking (yes, even in a dry pool) remedies the issue.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

DF Modding / Re: A different way to add sand to all maps
« on: February 25, 2010, 06:12:29 am »
Well I've had a Clay Desert before (very early in my thoughts on adding pottery to the game I made clay a [SAND] soil, decided that clay deserts were just plain wrong and found a better way to do it).

Clay deserts are not uncommon; however, they go by another name: badlands. This name makes them no less a desert, much as arctic and antarctic regions that are entirely (and consistantly) covered in ice are considered a form of desert (not all deserts need be hot, and ice is only wet when warm).

I like the idea of pottery, which means I only hope it comes in the next version.

This is a good little mod for adding sand everywhere, though I will likely never get around to testing it.
