"Save Scumming" is when you backup the contents of your data\save\region1 folder(or whatever it is you have) and restore it when something goes wrong. Note that this method is usually considered cheating but it has been used to some extent or another by just about everyone.

Edit: well dang PTTG beat me to it, but at least i told you where your saves are.

Aye, after hauling a hostile creature for more than about five seconds your dwarf panics and runs for it, leaving the Megabeast to rampage through your fortress.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cook cancellations

Aye it would

Urist Uristurist cancels prepare fine meal: needs four cookable items

versus

Urist Uristurist cancels prepare fine meal: job item lost or destroyed

I'm guessing you are experiencing the second one, and as someone mentioned this is usually caused by dwarves drinking or eating mister cooks job items. In fact if you look at the kitchen when you get this message you will probably see a dwarf just boozing away as happy as can be, completely oblivious to the trouble he is causing.

You mentioned that the cooking job items should be tasked for the job but i think they are the problem is that dwarves don't respect the reserved item designation when picking an item to eat\drink.

So the best solution is to place your kitchen on the opposite side of your food stockpile from your dining room, as dwarves will presumably grab the nearest item when eat\drinking this should stop the problem.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cages for Justice

Make sure the cages are made of metal, non-metal cages don't work for justice. And you don't have to do anything with ropes or chains, they are just something else you can use instead of cages.

Yes, those games count too, I absolutely love games which consist of surviving in the wilderness by (possibly) farming.

Notrium is all about surviving in a hostile wilderness, although it has no farming and has a lot of combat.
