To my very, very great surprise, members of the Royal Guard ran out to assist!  One to the aid of the fisherman, one to the aid of the hunter!  :o   They held up the enemy, giving my workers time to escape while other members of the Royal Guard and the Fortress Guard mustered together and sallied forth to assist.

It was a glorious battle, my newly formed Home Guard quickly wiped out a squad of bow-gobs(!!) and then rushed to destroy the spear-gobs.  Even though they were out-numbered by 2:1, the only lives lost were the two valiant members of the Royal Guard who'd rushed to the defense of mere commoners.   :'(  (This is the first time I've ever wished I could assign tombs posthumously.)

I never thought Dwarf Fortress could make me shed a tear.

Good sir, you have proved me wrong.

I obviously forgot the [smartass][/smartass] tags

Well I don't see what's so smartass about that.

"Perfect" sites have a way of coming back to bite you in the ass.  After all, Boatmurdered had lava, a chasm, an underground river, and one of the single most easily-defensible entry locations I have ever seen ;)

You obviously haven't been around here for long; Boatmurdered was made in the 2D version of the game, where every location was exactly the same.

Every location had an aboveground river, an almost perfectly flat mountain side, a subterranean river, chasm, lava flow, every metal and gem in the game, flux, and of course...

Mudstone

The worst problem with mudstone and sandstone other brown stone is it's indistinguishable from wood, so if you make a castle (or any other building) out of it, it looks like it's made of wood.

And then you have clarify to people that "it's not made of wood, it's made of mud."

Although on second thought maybe making a sandstone castle on the beach would be fun.

but really, its more fun if you just suck it up and start somewhere random.

That's great and all but usually I have a plan or an idea when I embark somewhere, and when the place isn't anywhere close to how I imagined it I get upset and lose interest. Sure I could always play a 'throw-away fort' but as implied by the name those don't last long. And, of course, sometimes I just stop playing and can't seem to get back to it... Maybe because I play DF on another computer that other people use for more important things...

It's not terribly hard to mod the other sand colors away you know.

Modding the game to be easier makes me feel bad.

Well, other than make war so they can dine out.

I'm guessing they got that idea from the bunnies.

This game explains why in DF elves just faff about in the forest naming the trees rather than doing anything productive...

Man, I get the same thing a lot, but for me the problem is usually the color of the stone/soil...  :(

And I just hate any sand color other than black.

:P, sorry about that. I have failed English class for three years running, consider yourself lucky that I am using a Firefox spell checker.

It's okay, I just couldn't resist an opportunity to post a picture of a discus. ;)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farming Predicament
« on: August 02, 2008, 03:34:12 pm »
I must disagree. I don't think it has anything to do with the 'ideal' conditions for the plants to grow.

I believe it just happens when there will not be enough time for the plant to grow before the end of the season. I have had a plot half filled, while the rest refused to be planted because of the red highlight. The plants that were planted grew perfectly fine.

Ideal planting conditions, not growing conditions. I assume this whole system is just a placeholder for the real farming system where temperature, moisture, and weather will be more important factors than 'what season the plant will or will not grow in.'

The game prevents you from planting in the last days of the crop's planting season to either simulate the season changing or to prevent some bug or problem that arises if dwarves plant crops in the end of its' planting season, more likely it's the former, though.

I didn't know so many people were uninformed of this.

The red name means it is the end of the plants' planting seasons, for example; Quarry Bushes grow from spring to autumn, at the end of autumn they become red because it is becoming winter and the plant's ideal planting conditions have gone; it is too cold for them.

This happens to plump helmets probably because the game does not recognize a crop that can survive in every day of the year; the plump helmet's planting season is from spring to winter thus at the end of winter it's season has "ended" and the game reds it out.

That's my understanding anyway, and the wiki should really be updated on these kind of things.

That pic is awesome btw, do you think its set up? (too perfect?)

No, back when I took that pic posting facepalm ASCII to anything even remotely worthy of it was the norm. He could have been a troll given how many of them reside on the WoW forums but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, trolls are usually less funny than that.

Is a level 35 character still a newbie? Regardless, someone who has been playing for 5 months should know a bit of background information.

If you mostly solo and run instances with pick up groups you could very well be considered a newb by level 60.

Welcome to reason number 2 why I hate MMORPGs.

What's reason number one? :)

I remember watching a video of a paladin intentionally getting the debuff and then shield-hearthing to the Iron Forge Inn. Guess what happened.

I don't think you're making the point you intended to, WingDing. It isn't the new player who asks silly questions that ruins online communities. Far from it. It's the elitist prick who posts a facepalm ASCII instead of simply correcting him. They are the scourge of gaming forums.

The picture is there to be funny, it is only relevant to my first point that you need to be a subscriber to post on the forums, which lead to my second point that anyone on the forums also plays the game (they can, however, not play the game and just post on the forums but that would be pretty sad considering they're paying money to do it) and thus the 'outside' community is actually just a small sample of the 'inside' community and your argument regarding the 'outside' community not being able to spoil the game is invalid as the 'outside' forum-goers could very well be 'inside' players.

Make no mistake, I do not dislike newbies nor do I encourage the behaviour displayed in the image I posted, it was merely meant to be a humourous image to make you laugh/roll your eyes. In fact, I enjoy new players as I find helping people overcome their difficulties rewarding and enjoy fresh opinions and superstitions regarding the games we play.

Communities in game can make or break a game. Not communities outside said game. Or at least I don't think so.
