DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Authority

I'm pretty sure Nobles can be ordered to pull levers. My nobility could certainly attest to that, if they weren't already crushed into subatomic particles that is.

I'm pretty sure this theory has been discredited a while ago in another topic. Maybe I can dig it up somewhere.

Also video evidence or it didn't happen!

edit: found it

This topic was made back in the 2D version when dumping didn't exist yet.
Don't you people ever read the dates of posts?

Is this your first fort on that world? Because if it isn't you may have killed him in a previous fort and since there is only one liaison per civilization you're not going to get another.

Actually, in DF human kings are usually badass weaponmasters, while dwarven kings are far less skilled.

Also, holy shit you got an actual king! And not just some random peasant pretending to be king!

They're not using the part of the saguaro that you're thinking of.

Actually, there are quite a few plants that grow outside (at least according to the wiki) Setting up a "quick flood room" for farming is an oxymoron... it usually takes forever to get the miners to finish up my elaborate designs and my dwarves are likely to die of starvation waiting.

Yes there are plants that can grow outdoors, but can't get them on the equipment screen, meaning you have to wait for your dwarves to collect the plants from the countryside which I find rather slow and unreliable.

Also you don't need an irrigation system to plant a farm, you can just dig down into the soil and plant the farm there. Unless you are on a mountain which doesn't have soil (for the most part).

If your dwarves are starving to death so early consider dumping your anvil on the embark screen if you have not already done so and bringing a large amount of turtles with you.

I registered just to answer your question.
I believe your mistake is that you are trying to farm outside.
Dwarves do not have crops that grow outside. You should try making your farms underground, that should solve your problem.

http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000871  has a post by Toady saying vermin eat food, though I guess they just eat it totally and not nibble it.

I seem to remember something about some vermin damage food, and other just eat it outright it but I can't find it now so maybe I am remembering wrong.

Well I stand corrected. But that still doesn't answer what makes food wear. I remember reading a long time ago that temperature has a wearing effect on food so that is most likely the answer.

i dont know this for sure, but i have seen someone somewhere imply that vermin cause wear by eating stuff.

I'm fairly (but not 100%) sure the xXfoodXx is caused by vermin.

I've heard of this but I'm rather skeptical about it. I never actually saw any proof of these claims nor heard anything like that from Toady. I want to figure out if this is true or not because misinformation really bothers me.

That and I actually like vermin more than say, most animals in DF, because vermin don't crowd in my dining rooms or cause massive traffic jams...

And because wild vermin can't mangle my dwarves' lower bodies.  :(

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf Mythbusters: XfoodX

Ok, I've heard a lot of things can cause food to wear such as temperature, vermin, "trampling", being outside a barrel, and being outside a stockpile, but I'm wondering what really makes food rot?

I've never actually had this problem myself (or at least I don't remember anything like that) so I'd like to hear everyone else's experiences with rotting food.

I find myself rather skeptical about all this so I would appreciate if you provide some evidence for your explanations if you can.

Thanks!

edit: I should have clarified that you should give information on your fort relevant to this discussion such as if you have cats, vermin, barrels, site temperature, that sort of thing.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: When does the action start?
« on: May 17, 2008, 12:59:00 pm »
I was trying to say that arguing wouldn't help anyone, but I guess I didn't put enough emphasis on that part. Then again, maybe no one wanted any help but that questions why this topic is in the gameplay questions forum. I certainly didn't mean to come off as antagonistic or anything (not that anyone else meant to either).

Now I'm confused.

You're having a problem, which is that the game is not challenging enough for you. The community has come and suggested you modify your play style to remedy this issue, but instead of trying this you argue that the issue should already have been solved by the developer.

Now how is arguing  going to solve your problem? You're not going to convince anyone to fix it for you, this I can assure you. So If you want to solve this I suggest you do it yourself because nothing is going to solve it otherwise. We aren't going to come to your house to help you and Toady is focusing on implementing gameplay features and not polishing the existing ones right now and, to my knowledge, polish comes in the beta stage of a game while gameplay features come in the alpha stage.

Also considering that this is an alpha, expecting it to give you the experience of a finished game is like expecting a quarter-finished cake to taste as good as a finished one. I think you are expecting too much from a product that isn't complete yet.

While I do agree that this community can be rather defensive at times, I still find it to be much better than some of the places I've been to, and I hope you would take a moment to try and make it harder yourself because it will be much faster than waiting for the 1.0 version of DF.

DF General Discussion / Re: "It is a time of great turmoil..."
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:22:00 am »
Once the army arc is finished you will be able to send your own armies to create turmoil! Although I'm sure that if DF politics model real politics in any way you will have plenty of conflict and strife anyway...

...I hope!  :D
