General Discussion / Patreon rate hike
« on: December 09, 2017, 07:40:39 pm »
Quote
Rate hike! Rate hike! Tra, la, la! And please include our Space Program in the budget

Long story short, instead of having creators eat the cost of transaction fees, Patreon is rolling out a new fee system of 2.9% plus .35 on every pledge. Not monthly bill, pledge. Anyone sending a dollar a month to a bunch of people will now see their bill increase by up to 36%. There's a claim that this results in more money for creators, but that doesn't seem well reflected in any of the numbers or creator posts that I've seen. It might pan out if enough users don't react to the increased price, but if any number of users adjust their monthly patreon spending (much less all the people leaving right out) looks like the artists definitely lose, rainbow and puppy claims from Patreon nonwithstanding.

Seems to me that this is much more focused on Patreon's recent run of VC money, where they're looking to disincentivize small transactions in general. They want whales spending money and rock starts, not college students on the street paying buskers.

Shame, but I've sent everyone I patreon a message to ask about other options to support them, and I'll be killing my account on the 17th. Bastard companies suck.

Edit: math error

Edit:

And apparently the new plan is to charge people on the month anniversary of when they pledged? Which means that the new system would have patreon charge my credit card repeatedly throughout the month?

DF General Discussion / Roguelike Celebration Thread
« on: August 12, 2016, 09:50:33 pm »
     https://www.eventbrite.com/e/roguelike-celebration-tickets-26125753833

So, Toady posted about this some time ago in the dev log. It's an entire day of roguelike and roguelike celebrations!

It's going to be my first time really being in California, but I'm definitely going to be attending. If anyone needs a ride or wants to carpool, I'm game to drive anywhere in a 200 miles radius thereabouts. Also, if there's any interest in a mini-bay 12 meet-up afterwards, we could organize something like that as well.

General Discussion / One Change to the Constitution
« on: January 09, 2016, 06:10:14 pm »
This is a thought experiment that I've been considering for a few days. Assume a situation where you temporarily have infinite political capital, such that you may make one, and only one, Ammendment to the Constitution of the United States.

What Ammendment would you select, and why?
Why was a previous poster right or wrong with their proposal?

Rules! General politeness is mandatory. Proposals must be single topic in nature, so bringing up a giant list is not allowed. Changing the wording (or deleting) any section of the Constitution is allowable, provided it's not giant. Giant as used in the previous section may not be defined further.

Life Advice / A city to settle in
« on: April 30, 2015, 08:59:57 pm »
I find my life in an interesting time. I need a city to spend a year in and I'm unsure where I should go.

For the moment, I've got enough resources to relocate, but I'd need to get a job pretty soon.

So, does anyone know of any cities that are reasonably fun, reasonably cheap to live in, and with decent low-level job prospects?

General Discussion / A question
« on: February 16, 2014, 11:25:52 am »
Hey all, I've had far too much to drink thus far.

Do you, or does any community of people have a responsibility to look after your fellow man? Is it worth war, in the doctrinal, destuctiive, fucked up sense, to save people from the fucked up, impoverished, tyranical lives that they live?

Because, at the end of the day, damn if driving my ass over a minefield to start all that, doesn't seem like a je;;ove wau to buy the fucking farm/

DF Gameplay Questions / Spoilers: Finding/generating curious structures?
« on: November 19, 2012, 12:39:51 am »
Are curious structures still findable with without digging by any of the following?
-looking at the building list for an upright weapon
-trying to link a lever to said weapon
-seeing the weapon on the stock screen

Also, what point of world generation are the blighters put down? Is there any way I can keep regening a world with identical terrain (namely the nice flatish volcano I found) and replace the curious structure in an embark square?

Greatly appreciated for the help, all.

Seems that someone decided to cut out the relevant part of our beloved fun comic, though. Fair number of people pointing it out in the comments, though.

White for purity and innocence
Red for hardiness and valour
Blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice

America, may she always be right, but when wrong strive to be right.

I suppose that it's time for a good ol' USA argument, isn't it?

Yeah, I'm going to make a GD thread for me to post links about stuff too! In this case, it'll be about all the problems with US military forces working with those in other countries. For those of you who don't know (which is very few, I'm sure) I a buck-private in Iraq at the moment. When we do just about anything, we're supposed to include local (Iraqi Army or Iraqi Police) forces. However, we tend to feel like this whenever we do it:

Forum Games and Roleplaying / White Rabbit

"You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream."

-Edgar Allen Poe

Got this idea while I was going for a run, and I've decided to run with it. This is a multiplayer, non-turn based (except in certain situations, you won't be waiting for other players, just for me; talking among yourselves [meta or no] is a free action) roleplay. Exactly what's happening or how it's happening or how it's happening in a meta sense are all mysteries right now (but all of those are possible to find out during gameplay). I will say that it's using a system within a system next to another system with a system determining the setting which is part of a marco setting. Another system is in there too.

Actions will be open ended, and I'll take as many characters as people who want to play right now. However, I'm going to ask that we characters stay semi-realistic for now. If you've got a good reason to play an extraordinary chap and can give me a pretty good reason for it (like you're trying to flesh out a RP character or somesuch) I'll consider it. No hard and fast rules for equipment, skills, or weaknesses, but it'd help a fair bit the more backstory the character gets. If you don't put much of a backstory, I may have to be inventing one for your character. A major drive or goal might also be helpful for the character, finding a lost one, dealing with guilt, or the ever-popular amnesia are all valid options. Simple escape would work as well.

Don't expect combat to be super-heavy duty help here. Think of this game as more Silent Hill than Resident Evil 4-5. At least in the beginning, realism is the name of the game, expect some serious penalties (in the auto-fail category) for trying to ascend to godhood without some serious preparation. In addition to actions by your character, you, as a player, may also make META-ACTIONS, as you figure out how the setting(s) work, you may be able to call attention to some quirk of the system to get stuff to happen.

The game will begin in the lobby of a lonely hotel, if you'd like to give your character a reason to be there, you may; else, I'll come up with one myself.

Game starts now (although it might be a minute or a few hours until I can get around to it, to give some time for people to ask questions and get characters in)

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Chaos Point
« on: May 07, 2011, 11:30:01 am »
Sandhurst, a beautiful city on the beach. It's got sun, surf, smiles, and plenty of sand. Of course, there's smuggling of all sorts of varieties, from drugs, to guns, to humans. The police force is large and very professional, at least in the city center, but are overstretched and corrupt in the barrios. Gangs fight wars, banks get robbed, people die, stuff gets stolen, pumpkins are smashed; but it's hardly Detroit, thankfully. What better place could there be for you to go?

What is Chaos Point?

It's a squad based tactical shooter with strong role-playing elements. More usefully, it's a chance to do some destruction for shits and giggles, or whatever motivation your character feels like having. It's a revival of a stillborn game (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=33469.0) that had a lot of fun RP but never got going properly.
It's the wacky antics of a bunch of skilled killers as they're forced together in sitcom situations!

What kind of rules are there?

How about that combat then?

The blight of forums games without clearly defined rules or strongly following multiple role playing instances while taking pooled suggestions has gone on long enough! Very truly, it is up to *You* to solve the problem, once and for all.

You have entered cyberspace to combat the plague of YASG's, but what should you do first?

It's a NSRV if that matters. I'd like to supplement my next read through of the good book with some highlights in particular verses and some scribbled notes in the margins. How much more damnation should I expect from doing this?

General Discussion / Through a glass, darkly
« on: April 13, 2011, 02:26:28 am »
Through the travail of the ages,
Midst the pomp and toil of war,
I have fought and strove and perished
Countless times upon this star.

In the form of many people
In all panoplies of time
Have I seen the luring vision
Of the Victory Maid, sublime.

I have battled for fresh mammoth,
I have warred for pastures new,
I have listed to the whispers
When the race trek instinct grew.

I have known the call to battle
In each changeless changing shape
From the high souled voice of conscience
To the beastly lust for rape.

I have sinned and I have suffered,
Played the hero and the knave;
Fought for belly, shame, or country,
And for each have found a grave.

I cannot name my battles
For the visions are not clear,
Yet, I see the twisted faces
And I feel the rending spear.

Perhaps I stabbed our Savior
In His sacred helpless side.
Yet, I've called His name in blessing
When after times I died.

In the dimness of the shadows
Where we hairy heathens warred,
I can taste in thought the lifeblood;
We used teeth before the sword.

While in later clearer vision
I can sense the coppery sweat,
Feel the pikes grow wet and slippery
When our Phalanx, Cyrus met.

Hear the rattle of the harness
Where the Persian darts bounced clear,
See their chariots wheel in panic
From the Hoplite's leveled spear.

See the goal grow monthly longer,
Reaching for the walls of Tyre.
Hear the crash of tons of granite,
Smell the quenchless eastern fire.

Still more clearly as a Roman,
Can I see the Legion close,
As our third rank moved in forward
And the short sword found our foes.

Once again I feel the anguish
Of that blistering treeless plain
When the Parthian showered death bolts,
And our discipline was in vain.

I remember all the suffering
Of those arrows in my neck.
Yet, I stabbed a grinning savage
As I died upon my back.

Once again I smell the heat sparks
When my Flemish plate gave way
And the lance ripped through my entrails
As on Crecy's field I lay.

In the windless, blinding stillness
Of the glittering tropic sea
I can see the bubbles rising
Where we set the captives free.

Midst the spume of half a tempest
I have heard the bulwarks go
When the crashing, point blank round shot
Sent destruction to our foe.

I have fought with gun and cutlass
On the red and slippery deck
With all Hell aflame within me
And a rope around my neck.

And still later as a General
Have I galloped with Murat
When we laughed at death and numbers
Trusting in the Emperor's Star.

Till at last our star faded,
And we shouted to our doom
Where the sunken road of Ohein
Closed us in it's quivering gloom.

So but now with Tanks a'clatter
Have I waddled on the foe
Belching death at twenty paces,
By the star shell's ghastly glow.

So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

And I see not in my blindness
What the objects were I wrought,
But as God rules o'er our bickerings
It was through His will I fought.

So forever in the future,
Shall I battle as of yore,
Dying to be born a fighter,
But to die again, once more.
