I'm thinking about starting up another one of the classic style zombie apoc role plays (see the original at http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=21545.0, recently moved to FG&RP). However, I don't really have the time/ motivation to do all the record keeping required for a full number of character, so I was thinking about having one or two shared characters with discussion on the proper course of action for the character to take each turn. It wouldn't be a choose-your-own-adventure game, but a similar, if a fair bit seriouser concept.

Any interest in this? What length of turns would be right, what sort of character should be shared (I was thinking something along the lines of the classic student type which usually get preferred as self inserts).

((Alright, my last attempt at this got interrupted by real lifey stuff, so I'm going to try this again. This is a writing experiment where I attempt to improve my abilities while crafting some more life into my setting. While providing an interesting enough sight for the forums to read. Any type of suggestion is allowed, from a request for a character, an action for the protagonist, or anything at all. It's at least a semi-serious story though, and I reserve the right to ignore or delay (preferably the second) suggestions that wouldn't work well at the moment.

Thus far, I'm working with two suggestions from attempt one,

The viewpoint character should be a hero, motivated by a desire for power over others. (For their own good, of course.)
His main failing should be his pride.
He should rely on his Speed and Agility in fights.

Which is giving us the core of the character and

... unspeakable horrors lurk ...

Which'll be worked in in time.

For now, I've already started the first section (and am carefully repressing my last attempt at it). There's still room for suggestions for it, especially because it's going to take me a bit of time to get it from my laptop to an internet connection.))

Creative Projects / Opening a writing project.
« on: March 19, 2011, 11:44:02 am »
Does anyone have any advice for the begining of a creative writing project? Heck if I don't have more trouble writing that first paragraph than anything else in my life.

I think that it's because of my Speechy type training, where it's standard to start a speech with a quote or story which is related, but disparate (because the speech contains several points, none of which should be fully covered in the intro). Doesn't seem to work well for anything other than persuasive speaking though.

Life Advice / Free notetaking/ organizing software

I'm looking for something to keep all my worldbuilding type notes in one place, something that makes it easy for me to build linked pages and the like. I used Microsoft onenote back in highschool, and I think that it would work really well. However, I'm overseas so getting a copy (legally or reliably) is pretty tough. Anyone know anything similar?

Pretty self explanatory. What the heck should I download?

I'm a fan of songs that are about war and fantastical ideals, but I can't stand songs where the lyrics are indecipherable.

Favorite songs: Amaranth, Carry on Wayward Son, anything by the Cruxshadows.

I like powerful instrumentals too (Ride of the Valkyries, O fourtuna, Requiem for a dream, ect.)

What suggestions are there?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Story-generator generated game.

Explanation post.

Basically, I wanted to run a forum game but I was terribly unsure of what I wanted to do. I considered another Zombie Apoc, but didn't want the responsibility. Some practice GMing will do me good, I think.

Consider this to be a somewhat rp heavy choose your own adventure story with multiple characters. My part in designing the story is going to be based upon the results of using the TV Tropes Story Generator. When the game starts to drag, I'll reroll it, finding good in universe reasoning for the story to shift should be an interesting exercise. Of course, except for the starting setting, I'm not going to be sharing any of the tropes openly.

Characters can be of any stripe you wish, general hero adventure types are find, as are more esoteric characters. Just give me a character name, a backstory (if you want), plot hooks, (if you'd like them included in the macroplot), and a description of their skills.
I'll give you the option of choosing your starting position, but I'm also willing to put your character somewhere if you don't want to pick one yourself.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Among the Planes: semi-input driven story

Among the Planes

((Basically, this is a writing experiment, I'll be making up this story mostly as we go, taking some of the character's actions from suggestions. Absolutly anything is fair game to suggest, although I make very few promises that it'll be included. Non-serious stuff will be less likely to be used. To start with, we'll need a viewpoint character. The starting setting makes the most sense if he's some sort of hero, but I can work with anything. The more backstory that everyone wants to generate, the better.))

General Discussion / Pondering on duty.

Hypothetical situation.

Let's say that we have a surgeon. The best surgeon in the world. Good enough that his being at work every day unquestionably saves lives every day that he's there.

Does this surgeon have the right to the right to take a vacation?
The right to retire?

But what if by *not* doing those things, he'll push himself to exhaustion or a heart attack?

Do we have an obligation to seslf-sacrifice, even if it's obviously for the greater good? At what point, during a good life, has one earned rest, not having to worry about the world anymore?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Scratch RP channel

Doesn't it suck when one is in the mood for Role playing but there isn't anyone about?
Or when there's a role play, but you've got to wait for someone else to be there and participate?

Enter the scratch RP channel. First, create and post a character, using the following instruction, then join the IRC channel found at
https://www.mibbit.com/chat/?url=irc%3A%2F%2Firc.newnet.net%2Fscratchrp. If I'm around (or someone else to GM) we'll have a pick-up role play. Feel free to drop by to see how it's done, in any case. This thread will be used for notes on currently active adventures (we'll pick-up where we left off, if need be), character posts, and comments on the project.

Stuff is borrowed from Rizeska's Under the Starless Sky, (http://theagora.net76.net/forums/index.php?topic=102.msg2119#new)
Squeegy's Foot Soldiers system, (http://theagora.net76.net/forums/index.php?topic=42.0) and
Noctis Vampire's skill system.

Chase down the information for Foot Soldiers itself, but generic rolls will be conducted on a D10 system, with modifiers for skill level and difficulty. From Noctis Vampire:

Forum Games and Roleplaying / World of Pokemon: RP game
« on: May 02, 2010, 07:47:03 pm »
Note that this is a somewhat serious thread.

After getting the urge to pick up Pokemon again, I decided that an RP thread would be kinda fun. It was originally going to go up on the Agora, but that board seems to be having some problems right now.

To start, simply PM me with a bio for a character. Give as much or as little information as you'd like. You may list a few starting pokemon as well, but note that the auto-balance system will be in effect (the mons will be as strong as the plot demands) Here's an example of a decent enough bio sheet:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Once I've gotten a few bio sheets, I'll write up start positions and we can go from there.

Character information (probably not updated):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The story so far:
The newly reformed Team Rocket has once again taken action against the world. They've occupied Radiant Garden, intent on controlling the Silph Co. Offices there.
Our heroes find themselves locked in offices turned prison cells without any of their precious Pokemon.

Hello everyone. I've been trying to get to be a better writer for a while now. Honestly, I think that the setting that I've come up with is pretty good and has some cool characters and plot lines. However, my writing still leaves much to be desired. The best way to improve is practice, no? Therefore, I'm going to try to keep up a pace of writing a chapter of a story every day.

I was going to put these up on Fanfiction or FictionPress, but I really think that it'd be better if my fellow forum-goers (and honestly, this is the only forum I ever really post on) got to look at them too. It'd be appreciated if I could get criticism, irregardless of how harsh it is or what the subject (poor references, bad grammar, overuse of parenthetical (a real problem of mine), switching tenses, anything). I figure that I'll host them at another site, they tend to have some auto-formatting to make reading them a bit easier.

Okay. links to the stories that meet my minimum "see the light of day" requirements will go here. As soon as I find them again.

Heroes and Strife
Yankee in Camelot plot type. Strife takes command of an ancient city and tries to save it from destruction. Surprisingly deep backstory, if one can recognize it.

Resurgence
Basically, it's a complaint about the handling of military matters in 28 weeks later. I went from the beginning assuming that America was smarted than a head of lettuce.

General Discussion / Strife defends Twilight ?!
« on: April 13, 2010, 06:39:30 pm »
Here's the thing everyone. I started a forum game as a parody of Twilight the game being produced by Toady.

I don't like to complain about things I haven't read or watched (I'm suffering through 28 weeks later before I rag on it right now), so I grabbed the copy of Twilight to read.

Here's the thing, I'm kind of enjoying the book. It's not a great book by any means, but I don't think it deserves a hatedom for anything other than popularity.

Note that I'm on page 200, so I haven't finished it yet. From what I'd guess, the characters will continue to sueify as it goes on, but I don't see anything that bad yet.

It's a meaningless romance book!!
Well yeah, that's what it is. I know that the people around here are more the type to read deconstructions, fantasy (low and high), science fiction, and other thinky or actiony things. Socially things aren't the strong point of most of us. Get over the fact. Romance is its own genre. And it's a genre focused on a character's love life.

Bella = Sue!!
Not from what I've seen. She's clumsy and a bit of a clingy idiot. When she moves to a small town, she is amazed to learn that she's the center of attention (which isn't unheard of).

Bella is an idiot!
The character doing things over "true love at first site" isn't that rare. Romeo and Juliet, no? Call it her fatal flaw.

Edward problems: A lot of the complaints seem to stem from Edward. The thing is, pretty much everything I've seen him do so far wouldn't be out of place from a normal hero.

Abusive and manipulative:
If a hero gets noticed by a girl who gets obsessed with him, what does he do? Especially a hero who knows that his presence is innately dangerous. Similarly, what hero wants to become emotionally attached when he'll have to be uprooted and leave or will just live forever. One can write a moving scene dealing with an immortal hero's love getting old, but it's not fair to assume that no one would just avoid the problem altogether. I find Edward trying to drive Bella away perfectly reasonable.

Stalking!
Edward then follows Bella around, isn't that stalkerish? Edward attaches to a belief that Bella is fated to die. Even if the hero has driven the suitor away, don't most of them still feel responsibility for her safety? He also snarks several times that Bella isn't particularity good at not putting herself into situations that could kill her.

Necrophilia / Pedophilia
Is Kane loving a chick a horrible thing in any of his books (bad example, actually, I'm talking about the immortal Kane who doesn't really have any good love interests).  Is Aragorn's love with an elf terrible? She's really old, right? And surely, an elf isn't that different than a vampire. I consider a vampire / human relationship where the vampire is control no different than any other cross species fling.

Edward is a Sue!
Well, let's look at this. He's got super powers. Okay, it's irregular for a romance novel, but it isn't a big deal in almost any other genre of work. He doesn't have any weaknesses, right? I disagree. Remember that the whole story is told through Bella's rose-colored eyes and Edward is quite stoical. From the things he says, he is clearly worried about breaking control and sucking Bella dry. He also feels responsible for her safety. He's got a tendency to want to flip out and kill anyone who fucks with her (anything other than a romance novel would let him get retribution). Plus, he's worried about exposing a family he cares a lot about. If one wrote from Edward's point of view correctly, he'd be a tortured character worrying about fucking everything up and a perfectly fine hero.

Thing I'm enjoying about Twilight:

Truck.
I've decided that my favorite character in Twilight is Truck. It's Bella's truck. Truck gets several awesome lines to describe him. Primarily dealing with its ability to utterly destroy any other vehicle that was involved in an accident with him. Ironically, as soon as I voiced my love of Truck out loud, he was hit by a van! I was amazed how much I had emphasized with an inanimate object (to the point where he's deserving of a proper noun and personal pronouns). Truck's triumphant return was also awesome.

Socially stuff
I'm not an especially social person. I'm the sort who enjoys being the crazy guy. For all that, I can seriously emphasize with Bella being worried about suddenly being popular, doing unpleasant stuff for her family, and worrying about what others think (I just usually cover up the last one with a Fuckit, but the thoughts are still there). It's also great fun to insert your own awkward pauses wherever they'd go in real conversation. I've been breaking up reading every few pages.

About my only major complaint about Twilight, outside of ones general to romance novels is the fandom.
Sure, there are a lot of rabid Twitards. But it's a hella fallacy to assume the book is bad from that.

Conclusion: Twilight isn't a classic work, it's clearly pulpy. It is, however, a fun read and decent enough.

Anyone want to say anything, for the Love of Armok (tm) keep it chill.
I'll chime in with defense or admittance of problems with what I've read.
