I understand that they aren't really being used at the moment, but are they really completely gone from the site?

I think that they were important, if only to demonstrate the "This is where we're going" of Dwarf Fortress.

The Dimension of Dawn

The elderly dwarf placed the portfolio on the table; between the two thin tablets of slate were pages of fine pigtail cloth paper. They bent over and started to read.

The first few pages were dedicated to notes about dwarves.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The pages had been kept in the capital archives for several years, but were not in pristine condition. In several places, spills and tears rendered parts of the document unreadable.
The next page was handwritten on paper bearing a unknown personal seal.

Notes: Quirino, Pageclan.
I've received the broad bios that I requested, including my own. It's interesting to read what his Majesty's spies think of my own behavior. I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into, volunteering to head an outpost. It should be only a few years though. Make sure the place gets set up, then get relieved by some more important noble. I can return to the mountainhome and live my twilight years in peace then, confident that I did something worthwhile.

However, I'm not sure how much I trust these six that'll be going with me. I'm set to go meet them tomorrow, hopefully, the meeting will assuage my concerns.

((Anyone who'd like to request a dwarf of anything about this young fort may do so.))

General Discussion / An evolutionary thread.
« on: April 04, 2010, 04:22:27 pm »
Hi! Let's move evolutionary clutter into this general area.

In my opinion, a lot of the trouble with evolution comes from defining it.

Natural selection leads into evolution leads into macro evolution becomes evolution as an origin story

Natural selection -> Theory of evolution -> Macro evolution ->Origin story

Natural selection
is a pretty basic concept, it requires only a few main ideas
1) Variance in populations
2) Traits are inheritable
3) Competition exists

1) is provable, some animals are bigger/ louder/ colorfuler than others.
2) also probable, DNA and Mandel's peapods show us this.
3) A bit tougher to demonstrate, but we'll assume that no one will argue with it.

Simply, natural selection says that some organisms are better at surviving than others, so they tend to not die and pass on their favorable traits.

The theory of evolution says that, over time, natural selection is going to cause differentiation with species. Some finches are going to specialize in eating nuts, some will work on being fruit eaters.

Slightly longer-scale, in macro evolution these changes will result in massive changes in body type, ie all life is descended from a common ancestor. You're descended from a protolizard that was just a prehistoric lungfish.

Evolution as an origin adds something completely separate to the mix. It postulates that all life is descended from a single organism that came about from some random chance. Also known as the hard-line Atheist thought.

Very few people can have much problem with natural selection. It's demonstrable with penicillin resiting bacteria for example.
Evolution as a theory comes under a bit more scrutiny, but none of it is all that credible.

Once we get into macro evolution, evidence gets kinda thin. Most of it comes out of terms of logically following the previous two. I'd have some doubts about the development of certain body parts (eyes, for example) through organic development.

Evolution as an origin story makes the grounds of a religion in my book. It directly requires abiogenesis (life from nonliving stuff) and exceptions to cell theory (which says that cells are only born of other cells).

In my mind, I think that some creationism needs to be included in textbooks. Not a lot mind you, but a two page section at the end of the chapter of evolution that explains that evolution doesn't include life generating by itself.

Feel free to branch off in whatever evolutionary or science vs religony direction you want (we'll let the thread evolve naturally, no?) but please keep the following in mind.

1) keep the bloody thing chill, mokay? I'd rather that we don't get it locked in a few seconds.
2) Quote block threads are annoying and hard to read. Can we try to avoid them? Address points, not wording, no?
3) Semantics is not an argument. It's fine to ask for clarification, but mispelling abiogennesis is not an auto-point drop.

DF Suggestions / Help in description of an item
« on: April 03, 2010, 03:31:35 pm »
Basically, just an additional line or two in the description of certain items (especially plants), telling what it's for.

So
"This is a stack of 3 plump helmets"

A player could also get the extra information of
"It is edible by dwarves, it is cookable, it can be brewed into dwarven wine."

It'd be nice to be able to see what a plant can do, especially in the case of outdoor plants which are a mixed lot, it shouldn't be necessary for new players to search the wiki to figure out whatever the hell Hide Root is for.

DF Bug Reports / [31] No abort from emark screen
« on: April 02, 2010, 07:48:22 pm »
Pretty self explanatory. One can't abort founding a new fortress once the region has been selected.
It's pretty annoying, as one has to go through the time of getting the fortress loaded if one finds the world unsuitable.

DF Bug Reports / [31] Crash bug
« on: April 01, 2010, 07:50:20 pm »
I've gotten a crash (DF.exe has stopped working) while trying to get my militia commander to attack a Giant Toad. I had him suited up and got him to attack a troll, but when I next tried to get to the squad page, it crashed.

DF General Discussion / Let's get pumped for DF 2010!
« on: March 28, 2010, 02:00:52 pm »
Okay everyone, we're on the home stretch.

It's been a loooooooooong wait, but it's almost here.

However, ask yourself once, "what exactly is it?"

Do you remember all the fun stuff going into this update? Probably not. So, let's all go back and read the dev log, starting with the advent of 40d.

40d came out in September of '08, so there is a lot of material to read. Feel free to post any favorites here.

DF Suggestions / Rock Depot
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:54:26 pm »
Kinda of an interesting idea I had.

Lots and lots of items tend to slow down a fort pretty rapidly and look bad. To some extent, one can clean up rock by dumping it into a quantum stockpile, but these items are still in the game (just compressed into one tile) so they are still kept track of by the game, and have effects like causing a loooooong lag if you dare highlight the stone screen under stocks.

There is a new building called the Rock Depot. It could be five by five. The rock depot would have a couple of commands.
1) Make rock pallet
A dwarf with stone hauling would drag 5 (or whatever) stones of the same type to the Rock Depot, where they would be replaced by a [stone] pallet. Five chunks of Microline = 1 Microline Pallet. This Pallet would then count as a single item in the game (possibly with its own sub-menu under stocks)
2) Break down pallet
Pallets wouldn't be good for anything other then storage, so to get the stone back, one would have this task, which would split the nearest pallet back into five rocks. It'd be nice if there was some sort way to choose which pallet was broken down (with something like the melt command or a format like the jeweler's shop maybe).

If it works, one could decrease the number of object in a fort (and it should work the same with any object that lack quality levels, like Microline blocks) without resorting to an exploit like quantum stock piling or atom smashing. The rocks would also be recoverable.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Strife's Survival Games.
« on: February 16, 2010, 07:33:41 pm »
It's a somewhat serious topic.

I'll be running a new Survival game. Basic format will be taking actions and then writing up results. However, I think that I'm going to try to run more than one different event at once, so we may end up with a Zombie story and a trapped in wilderness story. They'd function independently. I think that it could work.

For now, I'm taking suggestions for scenarios, and characters. I recommend that you be specific with the character, becuase anyone can contribute actions, I'll choose one largely on the basis of what seems reasonable for the character to do.

For example, if the character was an obvious expy of myself, action requesting that I burn down Fargo are probably going to be ignored.

So, for now, any characters you'd like to see? Or situations that you'd like to see them in? I've got a few already planned, but I want to see what everyone can come up with.

Well, I've got to be doing a project on Dante's Inferno for my AP English class.

How fun would recreating all nine circles of hell be in DF?

Ideas?

Hello everybody. I'll be running a roleplay.

Accumulated Writtings: Ralph lan Michel, Exercitus Dia 2nd Class.

The Dragon Inn remain one of the strangest of locations. Generally speaking, it acts close enough to a normal plane to be classified as the Dragon Inn Plane by the Records, although this is disputed by some. As a plane, Dragon Inn is considerably smaller than average, measuring about 1.3 miles square. The terrain of the plane tends to be light wilderness of varying types. Deciduious forest or flowed grasslands tend to be the most common. A road runs diagnally down the plane, in the middle stands the titular Dragon Inn. The Inn usually takes the form of a two story building made with plank walls and a thatched roof. However, it has been observed as being brick or steel at times. The Inn is extremely strong, having survived direct hits from a Ragorith battle tank (Event: 5Hj-Rmk-b3A-jfb-b7J-warcm58). There is usually a hanging sign reading Dragon Inn. Inside, there is the tavern. The main floor is taken up with table and chairs of varying types, a large fireplace, and a bar. The top floor is taken up with bedrooms. The inside is probably larger than the outside.

The plane itself is somewhat unique in the fact that is will enter other planes temporarily. Reports of the Dragon Inn temporarily appearing in all sorts of places. Occasionally, non-aware life forms will be inside when it moves and will shift planes. The owner and only constant occupant of the Dragon is classified as an elipsion class power. The Inn itself is quite secure, both by the barkeep himself and any occupants. The Inn is a common stopping point for plane travelers and members of Exercitus Dia. Special note should be made of the fact that Rouge Divine are often found at the Inn (notably: Grey, Strife, and Gilgamesh). For this reason, the Inn should be considered quite secure. For example, the Ragorith Attack earlier mentioned was believed to be Battalion strength. It was decimated in only a few minutes by angelic forces (commanded by this writer) along with Grey and Strife (who are both at or near their strongest on the Plane) who were at the Dragon Inn during the event.

From what I can tell, the roleplays here tend to collapse after the GM isn't able to check God moding for any length of time. Therefore, I'm going to try an alternate method. PM any actions to myself, and I'll write updates to the Inn, or anywhere else that players end up. As per usual, note that this is my setting, with my rules. Hopefully, we'll be able to have a few divergent threads going on, so that there is always something happening.

Well, I've finally gone and enlisted in the US Army. 19 Kilo position: Heavy Armor. Starting rank of Private First class. I'll start my basic and advanced training on July 28th.

Wow.

Feel free to discuss militarism in general, or call me a flaming idiot.

There was a pretty funny guide to writing an Aeris Resurrection fanfiction on geocites once. However, now that goecities is gone, I obviously need to consult it. For a special Operation Midnight Sea related project (which I've decided to call Plan of Action: Peace of Mind; Maneuver: Bloodletting).  Anyone happen to have a copy or know where I could get one?

Rules:
1) Keep it chill.
2) Keep it readable.
3) If you want to pick a fight with someone, feel free. However, I make the final judgment about fights with my own characters. Example: If Michal smacks you around with his sword, you aren't allowed to claim that you somehow beat him via Deus Ex.
4) The following format is appreciated: italicize narration, put talking in quotes, bold any writing.
5) Please defer to my judgment, I'd like this to go better than most of the RP's here.
6) Note that the tavern is part of a setting I created. While there is room for extra stuff, I can't allow anything that goes against the cannon itself.
