DF Suggestions / Re: alternate power sources
« on: May 14, 2008, 04:36:00 pm »
Just imagine the possibilities...
The goblins either stop coming around for fear of being captured, or they send an assault team to try to break out the slaves.
Elves would like you even less.
If you ran out of logs, just grab the nearest captive goblin to use as fuel.
I can also envision a system of moving 'bridges' being suspended by cables and able to move vertically (like a huge elevator).
Power a pump to create a series of small waterfalls in the dining hall/meeting area to improve moods.
Chaining slaves to a wheel eliminates the need for a water source for waterwheels or above ground windmills.

DF Suggestions / alternate power sources

Problem:
Currently limited to Dwarf power, wind power, and water power.

Suggestions:
1>Steam power - we have magma forges, why not magma/steam power
2>Treadmill - Horses, Mules, etc...
(I would love to see a goblin slave powered treadmill system)
3>Weighted gears for traps (load the stone, set the trap, grind the enemies)

Any I've forgotten??

Just look at history, with wars being started over cattle theft.
More points to consider:
1>Dwarfs with pets that get snatched would HATE the snatchers even more.
2>Pets would need to be kept on leashes so they would'nt wander off.
3>Try to catch a snatcher to hold as ransom for the safe return of a pet (or child).
4>The need to lock a pet up in a bedroom to keep it safe (requires a litter box)

DF Suggestions / Goblins snatching pets
« on: May 09, 2008, 01:59:00 pm »
If I were a goblin, travelling all the way from my cave to snatch a dwarf child, I would be hungry enough to grab a few domestic cats to munch on. Or perhaps the goblin tribe needs a renewable food source and sent me out with a cat trap....

Either way, I believe that pets should be targets for snatching.

Would you need bins dedicated to specific types of items? If I were to load a copper item in the bottom of a bin, then fill it with stone, the copper item would get crushed. I feel different types of bins could be used, just as a 'rail car' is designed for specific types (coal car, log car, stock car, etc...)

Also, use the same style graphics as walls, just with side marks for difference. Think of rail ties sticking out. Maybe toggle display just like engravings.

Horses and mules (and even children) have been used to pull mine carts since their invention. Perhaps some goblin slaves chained to the carts (this would make a new job - the 'slave driver' dwarf.

Elements to consider for mine carts:
1> each square of track would consume 1 wood (for ties) and 1 metal (for tracks)
2> each cart would require 1 bin, 1 mechanism, and 1 metal to create
3> carts need to be pushed/pulled (automatic carts are called automobiles and are not appropriate)
4> carts used to haul stone need a 'tailing pile', just check out the old west mines, they generate HUGE piles of stone
5> carts could be fitted with spikes, then rolled at the incoming enemy
6> trapdoors dropping enemy into carts, carts dumped at the lava forge (wastes everything the enemy was carrying

DF Suggestions / World Gen historic short lived figures
« on: April 16, 2008, 12:58:00 pm »
In a recent post in development, Toady wrote 'Unfortunately, giant lions only live 15 years on average, so the poor thing is destined to be nothing more than fodder for artwork and chatter unless the kill happens right before world generation starts. Perhaps we could let them linger on if they are successful, and in any case, during those years, the creature can have a bit of fun tormenting the civilization further once I get to stage 8.'
A possible (and fun) solution would be to have a second generation giant lion (son of 'named lion') take over harrassing the locals. He's got to learn something from his father, and once a giant lion develops a taste for goblin...
