DF Gameplay Questions / Do Ambushers Ever Die?

During one of those seiges that are rapidly depleting my supply of stone coffins, a goblin lasher was knocked into a muddy pond.

This wouldn't be so bad except that he has become a sort of harmless howling banshee, scaring dwarves away. They won't reload the traps in the area or pick up any loot...they travel halfway across the map and then get scared away by the pitted goblin lasher. So I've got a lot of dwarves doing useless, unfulfilled labour.

So I'm wondering: do these ambushers ever die of hunger or thirst? If not, is there a way for me to make sure the dwarves don't see him? I'd build a wall in front of him but no mason would get close enough.

This is sort of fun because it's like having my very own "Hound of the Baskervilles." But I'll be annoyed if he has eternal life.

DF Gameplay Questions / Item Modifier Symbols

Part of the fun of "Dwarf Fortress" for a new player (me) is figuring out the rules as you go along, mainly by watching the dwarves go about their business.

Still, there's a lot of information that I need the Wiki for, and THANK YOU VERY MUCH to everybody who has obviously worked so hard on it.

But there's something that I think would be helpful: a page devoted to what the symbols (eg. +, -, etc.) around items means. I've found the information about item quality, but there are other symbols that I don't understand...why are some items bracketed? Does anybody have a list of the potential symbols, and what they mean?

DF Gameplay Questions / Quickly Flashing Names

Awhile back, one of my popular dwarves died. Now, several years, later, I've noticed that the name of that dwarf flashes frantically in the "relationship" list when I view the relationships of dwarves that knew her. I think it flashes between red and yellow (I don't have the game in front of me).

Does this mean anything in particular, or is it a glitch of some kind? The flashing is so crazy that it LOOKS like something's wrong.
