DF Gameplay Questions / Do Ambushers Ever Die?
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:36:00 am »This wouldn't be so bad except that he has become a sort of harmless howling banshee, scaring dwarves away. They won't reload the traps in the area or pick up any loot...they travel halfway across the map and then get scared away by the pitted goblin lasher. So I've got a lot of dwarves doing useless, unfulfilled labour.
So I'm wondering: do these ambushers ever die of hunger or thirst? If not, is there a way for me to make sure the dwarves don't see him? I'd build a wall in front of him but no mason would get close enough.
This is sort of fun because it's like having my very own "Hound of the Baskervilles." But I'll be annoyed if he has eternal life.

« on: April 28, 2008, 12:23:00 pm »A dwarf DID fall into a well when I was stupid enough to put one in the Barracks -- she was wrestled into it. So sad to see her drowning in the reservoir while announcing that wrestling in the barracks has been cancelled.

Socks. Oh, the socks. There are far too many socks in this fortress. I wish there was a "laundry" workshop so I could start losing them in the dryer.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caged Goblins
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:52:00 pm »Stripping the weapons is definitely a pain, but it's easier now that I periodically "clean house" by dumping all foreign weapons and narrow armour. The trouble I have is uilding the goblin-filled cages in the first place; the menus tell me what the available cages are made out of (oak, birch, etc.) but not whether there's a goblin inside. If I have six oak cages, only one of which contains a goblin, I need to build all six cages just to be sure. Do Dwarves enjoy looking at goblins in a zoo?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where do traders arrive from?
« on: April 18, 2008, 09:36:00 am »I discover now that I can't build the depot on a road, so I'll build some stone floors and put the depot on top of that...maybe that will cure my wagon woes.
(I did try to put it inside, and managed to build my first ramps (which are a bit daunting), but it was still listed as unaccessible...maybe I didn't build the ramps properly, though my dwarves seemed happy with them.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where do traders arrive from?
« on: April 17, 2008, 12:23:00 pm »This is weird because the area the depot is ON is accessible, and the bridge is five spaces wide (I expanded it from three just in case). But the wagons just don't come to it.
I'm going to try moving the depot a bit further out in the open, and maybe doing some road-building. I've cut down all the trees in the area but I wonder if the lack of a road has something to do with it (even though the spaces are already listed as accessible).
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Item Modifier Symbols
« on: April 17, 2008, 07:56:00 am »And believe me I looked. I thought I'd read the entire Wiki but I never found that page. Bookmarked forever!
DF Gameplay Questions / Item Modifier Symbols
« on: April 16, 2008, 03:14:00 pm »Still, there's a lot of information that I need the Wiki for, and THANK YOU VERY MUCH to everybody who has obviously worked so hard on it.
But there's something that I think would be helpful: a page devoted to what the symbols (eg. +, -, etc.) around items means. I've found the information about item quality, but there are other symbols that I don't understand...why are some items bracketed? Does anybody have a list of the potential symbols, and what they mean?
Cheers,
Muffy.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Quickly Flashing Names
« on: May 22, 2008, 02:22:00 pm »You bet she was on fire, she went up in a puff of smoke when she dug into a magma pipe (I thought she'd be able to "run for it," but...no...losing is fun!)
I very much doubt she's still burning, though. There was nothing left of her.
DF Gameplay Questions / Quickly Flashing Names
« on: May 22, 2008, 12:19:00 pm »Does this mean anything in particular, or is it a glitch of some kind? The flashing is so crazy that it LOOKS like something's wrong.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Couple more or less technical questions
« on: May 22, 2008, 02:36:00 pm »Then, if I've just carved out a new area and I want the stones in the area removed, I'll set the masons to make stone blocks -- or build a long wall someplace -- and the dwarves run off to refill the stockpile as the stone is removed. Provided I've forbidden stone gathering in the areas I don't need cleared (mine trailings, for example), this works pretty well.
Still, part of my learning to re-enjoy "Dwarf Fortress" has been realizing that the dwarves really don't MIND sleeping in a bedroom full of Orthoclase, so I should just let them be pigs.
