I find Lux makes the best support because even if your adc is sucking you can still do tons of damage, randomly snipe the mid lane or jungle to get kill steals/easy assists while still being a good support.

I love XCom Apoc, the things I hated were that it was rushed and had crappy Artwork.

I liked the Pauseable Real Time and the politics of corporations (though that was woefully cut short as well). The overall plot was weak but I didn't have a problem with finding last alien, especially as motion scanner worked easily in real-time, aliens would panic and try and escape the map and if only stationary aliens are left mission completes so you don't have to hunt down the last chyrsalis.

Gameplay was fun and the physics was interesting which allowed you to demolish buildings instead of searching them and the vehicle combat was fun as well, although overall the game is fairly easy, especially on real-time, although for a more fun playing experience the game needs to be modded, Roadwar is a great mod which has some fixes, and makes roads indestructible which actually makes using ground-vehicles feasible, also I mod the projectiles because in real-time it's easy to dodge many of the projectiles so I make most of them a lot faster, that way it's harder to dodge the spitter attacks and sniper rifle is actually useful in realtime on enemies not coming directly towards shooter.

Overall it's a great game

Yeah I guess you'd never really need 24 people.

A lot of players intentionally bring less people to missions because the game had too many soldiers.

That was more due to the item limit than anything else. You just flat out couldn't bring enough items to fully equip an Avenger full of troops unless your idea of proper gear consisted of a laser rifle for each operator.

Once again, OpenXCom solves the problem, you can bring as much as you want on the skyranger, also same for base mission but also means that aliens are all armed as well instead of sometimes spawning with no weapons when you had lots of soldiers at a base being invaded.

Hell, new-X-COM cuts the maximum group size down to 4-6 soldiers and it's still beatable even on Ironman Impossible. Try beating all your missions in original X-COM with 4-6 operators; you're going to get massively fucked up even if they're all super-psyker cheesily-trained colonels with heavy plas, flying suits, and blaster launchers.

To be honest 4-6 rookies/squaddies in your first few missions will be disastrous but end game 4-6 guys can win most missions even without psi and blaster launchers. Psi is overpowered though and I only use it to screen troops, never to panic/MC aliens. Blaster Launchers are similar though I bring em along sometimes just to end missions more quickly but I don't use them for Cydonia.

Old XCom is fairly forgiving when you make mistakes as well because soldiers are more expendable and you can actually place meatshields infront of your valuable soldiers (I call it nature's kevlar), though losing a commander or colonels can cause tantrum spirals. New XCOM you misplace one move and you can fuck up your whole squad and soldiers are more important in new XCOM because they need training to even make good use of weapons.

That being said XCom on Superhuman mode can be pretty brutal, I got my base invaded like 5 times in February, sure it was just sectoids and cyberdisks but it was always risky especially with the crappy base layout.

Well the conclusion I was coming to was that both are pretty rubbish against metal unless you are poking holes in weak spots. I used to think katanas were pretty useless against longswords directly (as in katana would break) but I have been proven wrong on that.

Now there is some fascination crap about katanas but they were still pretty good swords overall, just not mythical legendary ones as they are made out to be.

I used to think katana's were just showy but they work just as well vs metal as longswords even better overall, though hammers would beat both unless your aiming for joints in armour to poke.

Tossing out smoke grenades right at the start off the skyranger helps not getting your troops get shot, but it can also cause the fun but dangerous situations of aliens walking right by your troops and then murdering them when you think the area is clear.

HWP's can take a beating as well, they can shrug off plasma pistol fire like it doesn't even hit them, and they can take a few heavy plasma shots as well.

Lasers are great for clearing cover off a map but heavy lasers are pretty useless (apart from original unpatched version where they had 140% accuracy for aimed shot iirc)

If you want to play XCOM with less bugs I would advise looking at OpenXCOM. You need original game files so Steam Version or CD if you have it, fixes lots of bugs and adds some nice new features and is easier to modify, still a WIP with some issues itself but compared to the original it has far fewer bugs.

Sorry, but I know he got nerfed. Not what I was asking. I was asking, how can you possibly come close to beating a good Olaf?

Well it's hard to beat a good anyone, in the mid-game Olaf works on hunting the squishy's and with his CC immunity ulti it means he can normally get to them, however there are ways around it but really it relies on good teamwork, Olaf is a tanky beast but you can use his CC-immunity against him by AoE CC (Frozen Gauntlet useful for ADC for this) on rest of the team while moving back leaving more distance between Olaf and them.

For an ADC it's sometimes better after you have used your escapes and Olaf is still on you to just stand your ground and try and lifesteal back your way, it will take longer for him to kill you and hopefully buy you time for your team to kill him alternativley just ignore him from the start and focus on whoever has the least armour to get more lifesteal easily. If your AP carry in the teamfight and Olaf targets you then its best just to try and use all your abilities before you die if your a squishy AoE caster

Well Olaf got nerfed hard. Directly he got nerfed by axe slow fading so easier to escape (makes it harder for him to chase) and he doesnt get passive armour pen from his ult and has to activate it which reduces his damage output a fair bit.

Indirectly health got nerfed and Olaf needs to build health so it costs more for him to get health. So yeah olaf a lot less deadly since patch.

Olaf got nerfed hard but he did need it a bit.

Sion looks more powerful now and his health gain ability is even more useful now that health is more expensive.

This belongs in a museum!

It'd be neat to be something of an artifact (artefact I assume is the non-American English spelling? I try to use those, didn't know that one though!) hunter though. And if storing them somewhere opened up the opportunity for thieves. Hell, carrying them may get you targeted. Especially if they have faction alignment involved. For example, an artifact associated with a polytheist religion might get you targeted by vatican assassins from Mars who want to destabilize their religious enemies.

Water? No Thank You, Fish make love in it.

Would be interesting to be an Indiana Jones style character, museums and collectors would pay lots of money for old works of arts. I wonder though are artifacts going to be in a dwarf fortress style where they can be randomly created (and randomly be anything?), perhaps it's better to make an item an artifact depending on who has used it or the rarity of it so perhaps you can hunt for stolen/long-lost crowns of kings of old.

Collections of items would also be interesting, like collecting all pieces of a ceremonial armour set or works of an artist.

Turns out you can actually play quite well without labs and workshops. You don't even need titan armour surprisingly as carapace is enough to protect you from oneshots most of the time.

Wait what? You saying your playing on impossible? Carpace saves me from being one shot by sectoids, thin-men can still oneshot, mutons (and elite mutons especially) can one shot colonels in carpace, heck thats possible on classic let alone impossible.

Me on impossible is whole team with titan armour just because anything else can be one shot killed.

Also I need the muton ammo and thinmen medkit upgrades.

I guess the real difference would be between the arbitrary one item per soldier limit, and the arbitrary eighty items per Skyranger limit. And the items we have now would be way overpowered if you could carry more of them, so you'd need to seriously rebalance the whole game. But I admit it could have worked.

It wasn't arbitrary, there was a reason and that was due to memory management. UFO: EU was made a long time ago a time where memory was scarce, there was only so much memory you could have on a map, there was something silly like in base defence missions where if you had so many guys and so many items that aliens spawned without items.

Also if your soldier got more then 255 in a skill it would then go to 0 on skill increase.

Focus on 2-3 continents, because you don't need to rush so many satellites you don't need to be rushing for engineers all the time so you can safely choose abduction missions solely to keep panic low in continents you want. The game is nice that once you have sat coverage if it looks like a country is still going to pull out it normally sends a ufo so you can win that for panic reduction.

It's always better to focus continents when placing sats, not just for the bonus but once you have a continent covered then it will be excluded from abduction missions until you have all available countries covered so the panic level will be more stable in a fully covered continent. Once you have one covered move on to another, I like to keep one half of the situation room covered so its either Europe+Asia or Americas+Africa. If you can keep more covered then great, gives you a bit of padding vs game over but if not just keep the ones you have covered safe.
