Well, this is slightly off topic, but what about scaffolding? It would act similarly to a up/down stairway, except be fast to construct and deconstruct, and require no supports other than an adjacent scaffolding tile.  Removal could be done by collapsing the supports, causing it to fall down leaving a pile of wood.  It would be useful for vertical constructions like towers.  It isn't quite as useful for downward constructions, but one possible way of removing it could be to collapse the scaffolding using ropes strung down to the bottom supports that the dwarves could pull from the top of the shaft (deconstruction of all connected scaffolding tiles from any position adjacent to a tile of scaffolding, this position could be specified by the player.)

Well, it can't be too hard to change as stance and actions like stealth already change your speed.  It would just be a temporary status effect called "execution"

I don't know, being able to pause world gen or scroll the view might be nice.  Don't you ever wonder what the map looks like other than the top left corner?

DF Suggestions / Re: Portals

Just make it so that you can travel between previously generated worlds.  If they are the same size, then you appear at the same position in the world when you arrive on the other map.  This would make teleporting rare and dangerous, as you could use a portal to a spot 10 tiles above the ground, underground, or in the middle of an ocean.

well, you could just make the action take a large time to perform, that way if three guys are KO'd you can go to each and kill them, but if one of them is up he'll whack you before you can kill his buddies.

How about using the 2 part surnames and combining the names of the parents? This would keep names original but allow you to recognize who is related to who.
Urist McBurningBeard and Urist McBeerBelly could make Urist McBurningBelly or Urist McBeerBeard

Yeah, if elves get changed back I am definitely going into the raws and breaking them again, they're just too awsome now.

Unless you use constructed floors and walls, the booze shouldn't be as good for drinking.

It only seems wrong because of the preestablished mythology.  I think we should start our own, who needs pale, skinny pansy elves when you can have pale, skinny maneating elves?  Plus do the goblins ever do anything THAT evil? The dwarves in DF do more evil stuff than the goblins do... don't you pay attention to the stories about legendary dwarves slaughtering whole fortresses?

IMHO, the new evil elves and peaceful goblins rock, why do we have to follow the mythology of other games?  DF is a different game, and in the DF community elves are generally more disliked than goblins.  I mean, goblins bring us gifts of metal and clothes! Why should we fight those who help us?  The  tree huggers who want us to follow their misguided ideas are the true villains.  Those pompous jerks consider the rats and flies that inhabit the world more precious than the people in it! I say let their true evil ways shine through! No longer shall we listen as we are told what to do!  I say they should be differentiated even further!  Nobody likes those pretty boys anyway.  The goblins have more in common with the dwarves than those elves do.  At least they understand what really matters, monetary value.  They're willing to fight for valuables just like the dwarves do as well.  Why not strike a truce up? There are plenty of shiny trinkets for both races.  The dwarves and goblins could kill the hordes of immortal scum if they worked together.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Cannibal Elves
« on: July 14, 2008, 08:09:22 pm »
No, elves and the other races go to war over the ethics of cannibalism.  Personally I think it should stay that way.  Far too long have the elvish tricksters hid among the other races as peaceful nature lovers.  It was only a matter of time before their true nature was revealed.  Now the other races must ban together and fight against the pointy eared menace before the waves of the immortal savages kill them all!

Wounds are persistent now, if they lose limbs in a fight with a megabeast they never grow  back.  They pass out from pain.

DF Suggestions / Re: Multi-tile units and Building Behavior
« on: July 09, 2008, 08:42:41 am »
Yay! A comment! (Sorry, had to wait 2 days before anybody posted so I thought maybe my post was idiotic or something)

But yeah, restructuring how buildings and multi-tile units work could allow tons of fun stuff to be implemented a lot faster and more easily.  I know it would require some work to actually restructure the game, but I really think it would be worth it, and would make so much of the programming more simple later on.

But yeah, I was hoping that somebody would think I had a good idea :D thanks juju for making me feel like a jenius.

Why not just build walls or supports if you don't want something to collapse and put walls in to cover up holes they dig?
