Other Games / Re: SALES Thread
« on: November 17, 2018, 12:26:47 pm »
I just learned of the game's existence a day or so ago, and I looked at it long and hard before going "Nah" after deciding that I might not like the gameplay after reading some reviews that say it can be steamrolled through with casters. I'll look at it again if that was actually an exaggeration.
Personally my experience has been that if you take the Hard difficulty petition as soon as it's available then it lands pretty nicely at the point where I've actually wiped a handful of times (and had a few other pretty close shaves where only 1-2 puppets survive the battle). Like a lot of the NIS games you can definitely min-max it to the point where you can crush most things other than bosses without too much effort though. And while caster's are strong in my experience they've come with a different drawback; i.e. if you use them too much then you have to resort to warping in and out of the labyrinth every 5 minutes to refresh their MP, and a caster build can usually be oneshot by a good breeze.

Oh, you thick-skinned youngsters. You've been raised on this shit.
It doth offend my Victorian sensibilities all the same.
Apologies, I probably could have better emphasized that NIS games (Disgaea series as well, for example) have a particular type of aesthetic and since this is a rated M game they aren't pulling their punches at all really. The game runs the whole gamut of some oversexualized costumes/enemies, descriptions of violence/gore and sexual violence (the latter not graphically, but still very much present), literal shit/waste covered and throwing enemies, involving the death of way too many characters who didn't deserve it right in front of you (some which you are actively trying to save), and has on multiple occasions made me feel like a terrible person for accidentally (multiple times) or on purpose (also multiple times) performing terrible acts for personal gain (notable call out to the optional boss who didn't want to fight at first and then started crying and trembling in fear to the point of passing their turns when on super low HP, that one... kinda got to me).

If one of those things really gets to you then yeah, probably give the game a pass. This isn't one of those games that some overzealous rating board gave it a M rating or that picked it up because it shows a nipple somewhere (AFAIK there isn't any actual nudity display in-game), it definitely deserves that rating just across the board. I'll edit the original suggestion to note that a bit more.

Steam is running an NIS sale right now. Most of them are your standard hit or miss games, but I highly suggest picking up Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk right now. It's somewhat expensive, even at 20% off it's still $39.99 (+$1.79/3.58 if you pick up the Strategy guide DLC and maybe the Manania DLC, which I highly suggest). That said I've sunk 93 hours into the game so far, and fully expect to sink at least another 10 before I actually finish the game, and another 20 or so after that to finish off the end game content.

The game plays out fairly like your standard dungeon crawler and is flexible enough to let you get through a lot of the game without needing to put a huge effort into grinding (pretty much all the "oh-shit" enemies can be either dodged, fled, or not triggered, and if you explore everywhere then that tends to be enough XP gain to not struggle too much in battles), while still allowing for huge amounts of min-maxing if desired.

Also the story has been pretty good (albeit rated M for a reason), the english voice acting is amazing enough that I'm actually using that instead of switching, and there are enough plot twists and unexpected turns that I highly suggest avoiding spoilers on the story as much as possible.

There's also a really great google doc put together that covers the handful of (important) mistranslations you'll run into as well as some good strategies along with your standard sort of item/treasure/skill/etc. database. And for stability I haven't had any crashes at all since the patch, and only 1 small one before that running on a fairly average setup.

HUGE recommendation for anyone who is willing to drop $40 on a game and enjoys dungeon crawlers.

NOTE: This is an M game for a reason, and a handful of oversexualized costumes/enemies are in the lesser of its reasons for deserving that rating. I cover it more in my post below, but if you're sensitive to that stuff then feel free to give it a pass, no judgement here.

I feel like "peel the onion before you eat it, idiot" isn't something that normally requires a cautionary tale to instill in people, but then again, people from northern climates are known to value layers.
You badly underestimate how poor some people's cooking skills are. :P personally the fact that onions are basically a case of "remove layers until they become tender enough to use" and there isn't really any real differences between the inner and outer layers other than toughness and how dried out they are still blows my mind from time to time.

DF Modding / Explanations of GROWDUR vs GROWTH w/ or w/o GROWTH_TIMING
« on: April 08, 2018, 09:19:42 pm »
I'm trying to update my aboveground crops to have more realistic growth seasons and growth durations, and I'm confused by how all this works. Can someone explain the interactions between GROWDUR and GROWTH (with or without GROWTH_TIMING) on farmed vs wild plants? Specifically:

1) Are either of these limited only to farmed/wild version? (Say does growths only apply to wild plants?)
2) Is GROWTH_TIMING after planting or for the whole year? (How does that work on planted versions?)
3) If it is for the whole year, what happens if a growth is set for a season that isn't one the plant grows in?
4) What about farmed plants? If GROWTH_TIMING affects farmed plants does that mean I would only get, say, flowers if I harvested a plant in a particular bit of time?
5) What about GROWTH_DROPS_OFF? Does that do anything on wild/farmed non-trees?

On trees the system seems fairly straightforwards, but on non-tree plants (wild and farmed) it's been kinda confusing and the last person who asked the question literally just got a reply with a link to the plant tokens page, which doesn't answer anything really.

DF Modding / Re: Wagon relocation
« on: April 07, 2018, 06:37:36 pm »
I don't know of any way to relocate after embark, but for what it's worth you can somewhat limit where it ends up pre-embark. If you select a biome with the F keys then (unless they've changed it and I didn't realize it) your wagon will always appear in that particular biome. Not quite as useful as you want, but it's something.

Question, is there any way to view the Length/Height/Broadness attributes of animals or just the total size? I'm trying to breed bigger animals and it can be difficult to estimate the exact size modifiers for a particular one when exact age can make a huge difference on their current size.

added commitment details for sexual orientation (lover vs. marriage, only for citizens, not for animals)
This is great! (Once I found where the setting was hidden that was). It certainly explains why my planned generation fortress wasn't having any progress; turns out that basically everyone was unwilling to marry members of the opposite sex. Time to abandon and roll up a new fortress I guess.

Which might be for the best, because then they can't fuck up canon.
I long ago came to the conclusion and acceptance that any film adaptation is really just a closely parallel universe to the adapted book series. Some of them (like LotR) are fairly close, some of them (like that terrible Eragon film) aren't even close, and some of them (such as GoT) start close and then branch off. This has very little bearing on how much I enjoy the film though. Personally I loved all the hobbit films, despite the fact that they were a far cry from exact canon they were still definitely enjoyable in most aspects (significant amounts of dragon voice overlays notwithstanding).

Personally I look forward to the series, even if it turns out that it's conflicting with preexisting cannon in some aspects.

Fair enough. I've always been a water + milk guy, and milk is obviously a little fatty to spam as your drink of choice beyond a few cups with dinner/etc. so I'm not the most up to date on various drink benefits/drawbacks beyond the "Soda bad!" level. :P

So I started working out regularly a couple of months back. The tipping point for me was actually getting a girlfriend; having someone specific you want to look better for is a great thing to help get the initial ball rolling. Its really cool to see a thread here on this stuff.

@Depression stuff
While my initial reason helped, this was something I had to fight in the process. Personally the thing that helped me the most was turning working out into my "last resort" activity. I'd have those periods where you just don't want to do anything, and I'd be like "well I could just stare at the ceiling, or check Reddit again for the 15th time... guess it's time to work out then". And the cool thing was that because of the chemicals that get released from exercise most of the time I'd come out on the other side feeling better than when I started.

@Music stuff
I'm a home-workout kinda guy, and as a musician even like shuffle music gets to me (but I still want something there for the feeling though). End result is usually that I just put "Work this body" by Walk the moon on repeat over my home stereo and just sort of zen out.

@Temptation
I think that a large part of success in any endeavor comes down to your ability to resist temptation. And there are tons of ways to avoid or minimize temptation in the first place. Make grocery lists ahead of time and don't deviate, so you don't buy things you shouldn't. Bring a water bottle to work and refill it rather than getting coffee from the machine. Make meals for several days at once, so you aren't tempted to deviate to higher calorie meals. Don't snack, or if you must snack take some time to make some healthy snack packs beforehand to ensure it's healthy snacking. One of the cool things about humans is that we aren't forced to follow our urges blindly.

I'm not sure what you mean by "slimmer" there; the release binaries that he's got up on the github are all within about 1-2 MB of the ones on the official port (some smaller, some slightly larger).

Psychonauts is free over on the humble store for the next two days or so. It's a pretty good game, so go and pick it up if you don't have it yet!

On a similar Humble Bundle-esque note, don't buy Dark souls 2 right now if you want to. For the exact same price as what it's on sale for on steam you can get it right now plus some other games later by just doing humble monthly for a month. (Unless for some reason you really want the original DS2 instead of the Scholar of the First Sin edition).

@Spehss
Worst case scenario show up the first day with an override form for the professor to sign. Almost all college classes "fill up" well before the rooms hit the maximum fire code limit; I've almost never had a college class where there wasn't at least one person who was getting an override into the class on the first day.
