Other Games / Re: SALES Thread

One Way Heroics and the expansion pack are together only $3.46; considering that I've already sunk over 23 hours into the game it's well worth it if you don't have it already.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do you pick your embark location?
« on: April 28, 2016, 12:16:44 pm »
Generally I just look around the world map until I find an area that seems to have some interesting features (such as a frozen area with towers or whatever), and then dig around in the local area to find a spot that is even more interesting and has some of my basic requirements like sand and then go from there.

It would be difficult to collect plant skulls, I think.
Snapdragon skulls?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Changes to water pressure?

It could be two tiles deep.  I would need to refer to the map again.  Would that cause this sort of explosive teleportation?
Yes it can:
Flow: Fluids under Pressure, aka Teleportation.

So I watched Trump's foreign policy speech.

It was actually competent. I was expecting rambling ad-lib speeches like the past few of his speeches I've seen. It seems like he actually knows what he wants to do in regards to foreign policy.
It may have been competent in a sense, but it was still a collection of conflicting statements and competent =/= coherent.
Yeah, when asked to sum it up in one word on the national public radio this morning the president of some american security policy association or something like that chose the word "incoherent". It definitely sounded like it might have made sense, but there was a lot of missing and conflicting pieces as well as just an overall "we're going to stop doing this so let's do my thing instead" without any real source backing up the idea that his policies will perform any better.

The main problem that I could see with Cryogenics that we just can't solve is the culture shock of suddenly skipping forward x amount of years.
You already get essential culture shock like that whenever someone moves to a new country/etc.; it's bad, but it's not like it's so serious a problem that it would actually stop someone from doing it.

The one major way we've tried and gotten to work is saturating the organism in question with an antifreeze solution, usually Glycerol, I believe. The goal is low temperature, not actual freezing, so if you lower the freezing point of the water involved, you can make it work, at least in theory. Prolonged stasis is probably still not viable.
Yeah, the major problem right now is actually the fact that most of said antifreeze solutions are actually pretty toxic, so right now we're working on the assumption that the damage the the toxic chemicals we are using to keep your cells from exploding is less than the damage that said cells exploding would do.

General Discussion / Re: I like anime, do you like anime?
« on: April 26, 2016, 10:57:16 pm »
I don't know, brotherhood is a bit of a slow starter, but if you make it past that the payoff is really good near the end. I don't necessarily think it's the best anime to start on, but it's definitely not horrible (and overall it's regarded by a lot of sites as still being one of the best anime of all time). The original FMA does start up a bit faster, but the fact that they were missing the entire last half of the story (seriously, over half of the characters from brotherhood don't exist in the original) shows in the fact that their ending, while still being decent, is nowhere near as good as the real one.

As a person who watched anime when they were originally released, the original hype was "FMA is awesome, watch it!" and then as the manga went farther and farther away and eventually brotherhood came out the hype became "Watch FMA:B, it's awesome! Better than the original!". Both are very good and they even did at least a decent job of pulling off an endings in the original anime, though I personally think Brotherhood is better do to the simple fact that the ending and second half of the story are actually present rather than missing.

Angel Beats! if you want something that can switch from comedy to drama at the drop of a hat.
The endings really sad (if hopeful) though. :'(

Some other general purpose suggestions:
- Fate/Zero followed by Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (the tv show, not the film). Zero has a better story, but UBW is the prettiest anime in existence right now and is worth the watch just for that fact alone. You can see the money pouring out of every shot.
- Baccano starts out kinda slow but it's worth the watch just for Isaac and Miria's hijinks, without even considering the rest of the show (which only add to it's appeal).
- Durarara!! is another really great slow burner by the same team that has 4 seasons or so out right now. It definitely takes at least 6 or so episodes to get into it, but it's still a really neat drama/slice of life with a touch of the fantastical added on top that works great for binge watching.
- Sword Art Online is a show people tend to either love or hate. It's important to recognize at the beginning that the show is actually a romance rather than your standard shonen fare (and works much better if you look at the true protagonist not being the main character). It suffers from a few rushed/filler arcs, but IMO the show itself (ignoring any other books/games/etc.) is really good. It tends to be love it or hate it though, as I mentioned before.
- K (sometimes called "the K project") is a pretty cool show if you can stand the heavy male homoerotic overtones that the show really likes to imply at times.
- Kill la Kill takes the ideas of baring skin and going over the top so far that it loops around and crosses the line twice (or maybe three times). If you can't stand the sight of bare skin then it's definitely not the show for you, but if you can stand it it's one of those shows that appears to have already gone as far as it can go by episode 2-3 and then keeps going, leading to more and more over the top epicness that just keeps getting more and more awesome.

Life Advice / Re: PC Freezing Problems
« on: April 22, 2016, 06:29:32 pm »
50C is nothing, in general the rules for most computers is to try to keep it well under 80-90C at all costs (though most computers won't actually start to fail until the 110-130C range). Whatever you've got happening is almost certainly not an overheating problem. The things I'd probably check in order are:
1) Check drivers
2) Try running the repair installation option with your Win 10 repair disk
3) Make sure everything is plugged in; could be you have a loose RAM module or something that is wiggling around and causing restarts.

I find it hilarious how Elan's tendency towards the dramatic is so great that it actually gets lampshaded in the comic itself. :P

Is it though? The current cost of an infantryman's equipment is about 17.000 apparently, but the Pentagon is already testing ways to make that more expensive, including smart guns, heads-up display etc etc.

And then of course stuff like HAL would be great for troops like artillerymen.
That's $20k on top of the cost for all the other actual equipment that they would be wearing (armor, guns, ammo, etc.), not $20k instead of the current cost. :P (So more than a doubling in the current cost).

what are the issues associated with doing away with gender-oriented restrooms? hasnt this been done anywhere with success? i heard theres no gender segregation in the norwegian military and it was ok.
sexual abuse? Military can deal with that way better than the average public.
This is actually just a big red-herring panic-scare. Check expert feedback on law after law and you'll see plenty of things like this instead:
Quote
I am unaware of any sexual assault as the result of the CT gender identity or expression law.  I'm pretty sure it would have come to our attention.
Quote
In Hawai`i, the protection against discrimination in public accommodations on the basis of sex, including gender identity or expression, has not resulted in increase sexual assault or rape in women's restrooms.  The HCRC is not aware of any incidents of sexual assault or rape causally related or attributed to the prohibition against discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. (In contrast to anecdotal reports of transgender students being harassed and bullied in school restrooms when forced to use an assigned restroom inconsistent with their gender identity.)
Quote
We have not seen that. I doubt that's gonna encourage the behavior. If the behavior's there, [sexual predators are] gonna behave as they're gonna behave no matter what the laws are.
Quote
I know that this concern persists but I personally have not seen any factual basis for it.

I am not aware of any increased sexual assault or rape in women's restrooms as a result of Maine's 2005 adoption of protections in the Maine Human Rights Act for sexual orientation.
Quote
Since this 1997 amendment there have been no incidents or issues regarding persons abusing this ordinance or using them as a defense to commit crimes. Specifically, as was raised as a concern if the bill were to be passed, there have been no incidents of men dressing up as women to commit crimes in female bathrooms and using the city ordinance as a defense.
Quote
The argument that providing transgender rights will result in an increase of sexual violence against women or men in public bathrooms is beyond specious.  The only people at risk are the transgender men and women whose rights to self-determination, dignity and freedom of violence are too often denied.  We have not heard of any problems since the passage of the law in Massachusetts in 2011, nor do we expect this to be a problem.  While cases of stranger rape and sexual violence occur, sexual violence is most often perpetrated by someone known to the victim and not a stranger in the bush or the bathroom.
Quote
Sexual assaults stemming from Minnesota's 1993 transgender non-discrimination law have been "not even remotely" a problem. Based on his experience, the notion of men posing as transgender women to enter women's restrooms to commit sex crimes "sounds a little silly," Elder said. According to Elder, a police department inquiry found "nothing" in the way of such crimes in the city.
Quote
Asked whether Nevada's 2011 gender identity law had fueled a rise in sex crimes, Las Vegas Police Department spokesman Jesse Roybal told Media Matters, "the answer would be no." After the department's lieutenant for sexual assault ran a check of crimes since 2011, Roybal told Media Matters that the department had not "had any incidents involving transgender suspects."
Quote
We are unaware of any cases of assault in our city as a result of transgendered [sic] accommodations.
Quote
Our agency has encountered zero allegations of LGBT assault related to this public accommodation protection.
Quote
I have never heard of any issues like this in Portland. We have a very low rate of sexual assault/rape crimes here overall.
Quote
In addition, we are not aware of any affect the passage of the law has had on incidents of assault in public restrooms.
Quote
I have only been here a short time so was checking with my staff to find out if they were aware of any issues. ... We are not aware of any other issues or problems similar to this caused by prohibiting discrimination against those who are transgendered.
Quote
Montpelier Police Chief Tony Facos responded to an email inquiry about whether the state's non-discrimination law had led to incidents of rape or sexual assault in women's restrooms, stating, "We do not have any complaints related to this issue."

Simply put, the whole "non-gendered bathrooms will lead to a sharp rise in sexual assault!" stuff is basically just a bunch of hooey that has been kicked up into a public panic by people who have no actual idea what they are talking about.
