Someone's had a bit too much fun I think.

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Fun

Also, I now remember that one of my OTHER favorite tactics is one favored by many military forces in the roman era on both a tactical and strategic level.

Grab them by the throat and stab them in the vitals. :D

On a tactical level, that means grabbing their throat and hacking their head off or running them through. On a strategic level - which is unfortunately not implemented in DF yet - it means to pin an attacking force in place (grabbing them in the throat, coliqually) by engaging them with infantry and then flank them with cavalry, who will proceed to work with the infantry in stabbing them in the vitals. :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DRAGON ATTACK in a 77 population fort!
« on: July 25, 2008, 02:53:45 pm »
I just got a dragon attack... at a relatively young fort. I have plenty of marksdwarves, but I think this will end very messily and flamily... Updates forthcoming!

UPDATE: So the dragon comes way before my preparations are complete and promptly roasts two poor farmers, boiling away a part of the brook and setting fire to my nearby machinery, which chokes the place in smoke. I blindly grope around and find that the dragon's had it's heart pierced by a bolt, but it's not done yet. It rises up one final time and immolates my armorer, sets fire to my hammerdwarves, and now I have dwarves running around screaming while on fire. I'm doing my best to contain the blaze, but jeez. I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't taken him down so quickly.

UPDATE2: Fires out, just in time for a herbalist to die by falling into the river while on fire. Sigh.

UPDATE3: Cancel previous assessment.

And this was one of the most wood-rich maps I've ever been on. At least the fire isn't doubling back, so hopefully not ALL of the trees will burn...

Legendary missile weapons do more damage in melee, but they shoot ordinarily.

Make him a fighter and go down the archery paths. Cross-class to ranger later on. You can't lose!

711
Apart from casualties during winter when I couldn't get water, I have had zippo casualties to starvation or dehydration so far. My dwarves are doing it MUCH better this time. Hooray, Toady!

And yeah, I'm making a cistern now.

As soon as I saw it, I had a Fortressgasm.

I cannot _wait_ for some of this!

Grab throat with weapon. Strangle x20. Engage new target.

714
Speaking of which, the bow is named Sirabrobek, the Warm Barb.

715
Or the metalsmith's, have them each make a shortsword or something. That should make sure they go there.

1. Adventure 1 - Wolves - MORTAL WOUND!!! (Throat torn)
2. Adventure 2 - Wolves - MORTAL WOUND!!! (Throat torn)
3. Adventure 3 - Wolves - MORTAL WOUND!!! (Throat torn)
4. Adventure 4 - Wolves - MORTAL WOUND!!! (Throat torn)

I can't get a break, even when I try to pick them off one at a time.

Let them chase you until one gets ahead of the others. Attack that one once or maybe twice. Start running again. Repeat until all wolves are crippled. Proceed to hack them all to bits.

Boatmurderer, I love your name. :D

And yes, I'd like to see this as well.

718
Maybe, but you have to consider that every F-18 and other modern fighters use what is essentially a souped up gattling gun - something from the days of the Wild West. Don't discount things just because they're old ideas. ^_^

DF Suggestions / Re: More Cultural and Civil buildings
« on: July 25, 2008, 03:12:37 am »
The school would teach dwarven children basics of skills like planting or crafting. Chosen by them, usually, but you can make them go down certain paths at the cost of an unhappy thought that persists. The university would be more like a guild, with experienced workers mentoring newer dwarves. Could even work for the "desk part" of military skills.

Hospital would work in conjunction with the health care labor and be made from a healthcare station of some sort or a bed.

Fire department would be a bucket brigade, mainly, using volunteers.

DF Suggestions / Re: On the Topic of Lethal Sparring
« on: July 25, 2008, 03:05:46 am »
Honestly, I think there's merit to both sides.

There should be an option to switch the teaching method of sparring dwarves. Do they go at it slow and careful, or do you implement Spartan like military training where they go at each other as hard as possible? Former should result in little injuries but slower skill advancement, whereas the second one would result in faster advancement, especially of attributes.
