Doesn't even have to be animalistic. Some of the fighting styles that were invented by great folks were based on experience as well.

Say your dwarf's been wounded - he'll want a defensive style that focuses on protecting the limbs. Say your dwarf is pacifistic and doesn't like to unneccessarily kill others (once captives and the like are in in more detail) - he'll champion a style that focuses on blending with the force of an attack and knocking the opponent unconcious rather than killing them. Say your dwarf isn't very strong but very agile - he'll make a style that doesn't rely on strength but speed or balance.

Morihei Ueshiba made the Aikido Japanese martial art, which focuses on throws, joint-locks, and blending with the force of an attack to subdue an opponent without hurting him, after he defeated a Japanese military officer in a duel without hurting him by simply evading his attacks until he dropped unconcious from sheer exhaustion. The inventor of Judo - I can't remember his name - couldn't effectively do Jujitsu because he didn't have the strength for it, so he made a less strength-intensive martial art, Judo. And those are just off the top of my head!

My dwarves are bravely trying to save the life of a thirsty wrestler with a broken arm. Instead of getting one job and having it canceled, they're trying again and again to get water, though unfortunately there is none at the moment because all the water is frozen.

Did Toady change it so that dwarves actually try to feed/water the wounded better?

Hmm, that might be a good idea. Thanks.

I would if you could sell artifacts. :P They'd LOVE it, I'm sure. Or you know, kick my ass because it's made out of wood. -.-

I didn't know dwarves knew how to make bows, anyway. O_o

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I get a fey mood in a bowyer's workshop...

... And instead of something my dwarves can USE, like a CROSSBOW maybe, he made a maple bow.

Am I ever gonna get a legendary weapon? T_T

Ah well, at least it boosted my wealth and he's a legendary bowyer now.

I have a save here where dwarves are "on break" and not drinking from the brook nearby, which is designated as a water source. Might be worth taking a look at even though it's not 39e. Are they so alcohol-deprived they can't even get a drink of water? :)

I prefer "newbie", honestly, since "noob" in many internet circles means "a newbie who doesn't learn or is purposefully annoying", whereas "newbie" is a kinder version used to refer to those who are new but mean well.

I think I saw this in the dev notes. Toady definitely wants to blend the two to some extent - he's mentioned that he wants to let you switch over to adventurers or adventuring parties during regular gameplay, and control your patrols when they're sent out to do battle.

Welcome to the forum, by the way. Hope you enjoy your stay.

To 'zerg rush' means to mob with many many units (usually weak ones). It comes originally from the game starcraft because a viable tactic when playing as the Zerg (an alien race) was to make loads of their cheapest unit and win the skirmish in a few minutes by rushing them with your horde.

More specifically:

Starcraft has three races which are well known for their good balance.

You have the Protoss, who's units are insanely expensive but hard to take down (and I mean very hard).
You have the Marines (humans), who are well balanced and have technologically advanced units.
And finally you have the most well known, the Zerg, a parasitic organism of some sort that infests and controls all it comes across. Zerg units are weak but VERY cheap.

Now, a "rush" is a tactic that basically means "crank out some early units and go straight for the enemy base before he has a defense set up at all". Seeing as in the game early on your buildings are utterly defenseless and you have no military, a rush could be your doom. Zerg are the best for this, seeing as their weakest unit, the "Zergling", can be produced in MASS numbers to blot out the... ground... for the enemy. So you can destroy them before they get enough resources to put up a fight. It's a well known and effective tactic, but often derided as cheap.

In response to a rush, you could "turtle" - build up tons of defensive stuff, mine resources as fast as you can, and mow down the zerglings before they can do any real harm. However, this means you're lacking in offense and can't skirmish in the early game. One of the well known tactics for countering a rush was to build bunkers and Siege Tanks (I think that's what they're called) behind your defensive line, which will _murder_ the zerglings en masse.

So you can obviously see the similarities with elves. Charging brute-force with hundreds upon hundreds of individually weak soldiers in a swarm against a superior but underprepared and outnumbered opponent.

Check your civs screen - perhaps it's a different human civ the dwarves are at war with?

Just make lasgun ammo really, really light, bundle it in like packages of 500 (if that's even possible, though I doubt it) and call it lasgun power. The cells that are used in lasguns can last for hundreds of shots, and can be recharged on solar energy.

Apologies for the double post, but figured it was enough to warrant a bump.

I think I've found a save that reproduces this. Apparently the whole town is going to sleep and waking up intermittently in the morning. Beware, though, the town is hostile because I accidentally attacked a guard, silly me. :P (Long story.)

I'm currently working on uploading my region1 folder in data/save to rapidshare. An edit is forthcoming.

Edit: Here it is, Toady: http://rapidshare.com/files/131779879/region1.rar.html

Let me know of any problems. If you need to get a response from me and I don't notice your posts here (as I rarely visit the bugs forum) you can feel free to email me at dmuir92@hotmail.com.

If you'd like, I could give you my race or post the raws here. If nothing else it would give a general idea about how to mod in a human-like bird race.

735
I'll see if I can get you one, Toady.

Edit: Can't reproduce it in unmodded DF. I'll keep trying.
