DF Suggestions / Re: less specific liason negotiations
« on: July 17, 2009, 10:51:52 am »
Because that way you can scroll down to 'wood' for example, when negotiating with humans, and tap the plus key four times. Bam, you've just requested the maximum possible amount of wood.

I like that idea; I wouldn't want to use it for stone or metal very badly, too many useless types. But it's a good plan for food, drink, wood, and the like. Probably for weapons and armor for melting too.

An alternative would be to add a 'rags' item that could be used for various things. Papermaking, maybe. Stuffing for pillows. That sort of thing.

More controllable fire should be in waaaaay before gunpowder. People have been using boiling oil for a long time.

DF Suggestions / Re: Move Bowyer proffession to Mechanic group

I would leave the construction of any mechanism sub-part to the mechanic. The teeth on cogs and gears and such have to be incredibly precise to function properly. Let the mechanic be the one to carve them, since he's the one putting them together and knows how they should work.

Forbid the stones you don't want used via the stocks menu. You'll need up to date records by your bookkeeper for this to work.

Be aware that if you've built any workshops (or trade depots) out of forbidden stones, they'll become invisible to your dwarves. You'll have to manually unforbid them using the t menu.

This is even more hilarious if you imagine it as Dwarven Hot Pants.

DF Suggestions / Re: Building masonry structures gives experience.

Experience is never earned by masons except at the mason's workshop. The 'building designer' skill can be earned by designing buildings that require an architect, but it's totally separate.

Someone post this in eternal suggestions. This is an excellent idea.

Sure, it's an 'exploit' that lets you train a mason without using much material. But ask yourself: Could I do this in real life? Yes. Yes you could. You'd get really, really bored, but you'd learn the right way to build a stone wall.

I like this idea.

For those that want their dwarves to be totally random: great! Have fun with that. You can just leave the button alone and ignore your dwarves profiles until you get in game. But for those who want to use the game as a storytelling tool, this is a useful option.

(And really, given the game's origins, using DF as a tool to tell stories is very appropriate. So much of the game is devoted to generating history and historical figures, letting the player in on the action seems only reasonable.)

DF Suggestions / Re: Floor Construction
« on: July 01, 2009, 10:14:50 pm »
The easiest way to handle this is to produce multiple units of stone per mined tile. Require all of them for a wall, and only some of them for a floor.

But that would be cluttering, and nobody wants that.

Magma pools are not mountain only. But it is probably the underground pool that's throwing off the search.

The other one that's going to be giving you trouble is the flux stone; magma pipes and pools usually appear in volcanic rocks, which exclude flux, typically. The only places you'll find flux and magma in the same place are going to be the boundary regions of the volcanic area.

Dwarves probably already eat fairies, given the chance. They eat live rats, after all.

Some of the color codings are nearly useless, though. A furnace operator is the same color as a weaponsmith, and mason is the same color as an engraver, and the brown farmer color covers everything from planting to woodburning.

"Urist McDwarf cancels Breathe: Drowning in beer."

Kegstands are a bad idea.
