Alternatively, lock them all into a killing fields and murder them.

That would be enough to make any number of Goblins throw down their weapons and flee.

I'm planning a new fortress (of course), and I was wondering if pickaxes in combat used hammer skill, axe skill, or mining skill?

I want to make sure (because I'm a dirty fecking cheater, yarrr!) that all of my dwarves can grab a sword and fight the horde (metaphorically - most likely they'll be grabbing hammers), but I was thinking that if the miners are going to have picks in their hands all day, and because I make most if not all of my dwarves miners, if I could just set up their hammer skill and have them serve as an "okay enough" defense force until I get some good, draftable peasents.

Just got a live one!

Possession in a Terrifying terrain, possessed a metalsmith. At first I was like "Oh awesome, Weapon PLZ!"

Then I noticed the dipshit smith was going for the copper bars in the smelter rather than the steel bars in the wagons, and groaned.

Oh well, I needn't have hoped. Here's what I got:

Subsudir Lumnumlisat, "Dripcinders the Labyrinthine Notch", a Copper Bucket.

This is a Copper bucket. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. The handle is made from Copper. On the item is an image of a toad in Copper.

I guess some spirit really likes copper. And buckets. And toads.

This has gotta be the most...

Tosidothas, Armorwild, a Tower-cap statue.

This is a Tower-cap statue. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of Tower-cap. This object menaces with spikes of Tower-cap and Obsidian. On the item is an image of a Native Gold statue in Tower-cap. On the item is an image of a Native gold statue in cat bone.

This is an artifact statue which consists of TWO IMAGES of a PREVIOUS ARTIFACT STATUE... In cat bones and wood.

I'm kind of speechless. On the one hand, this kind of thing is just odd. On the other, it makes sense in a weird way. It was a possession, not a fey mood, so I'm going to explain it as a spirit that so loved the statue in our dining hall that it went crazy with admiration and had to copy it.

I just got a really cool one:

Angenmothkat, "The Fair Mansion", a Native gold statue. ($130,800)

This is a Native gold statue. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of Obsidian. This object is adorned with hanging rings of Native gold. On the item is an image of a dwarf in dog leather.

Here's what I've done - I based it on a "living pods" thing I found on the Wiki, but I expanded it because I like giving my dwarves larger rooms, and I enabled subsidised housing into perpetuity (IE, I turned off rent)

# = Wall
X = Up/Down Stairway
D = D

code:

##########################
#    #    #    #    #    #
#    #    #    #    #    #
#    #    #    #    #    #
#   D#D   #   D#D   #    #
#####X#########X#####    #
#   D##   #   D##  ##D   #
#    #    #    #   #X#   #
#    #    #    #   #X#####
#   ##D   #   ##D  ##D   #
#####X#########X#####    #
#   D#D   #   D#D   #    #
#    #    #    #    #    #
#    #    #    #    #    #
#    #    #    #    #    #
##########################

Yes, I realize it's not the most efficient - especially with the twin-staircase where only one would be needed, strictly speaking, but the design was dictated by my fumbling the 'foyer' on the first floor. It was dictated by the design of the rooms on the foyer. It's not perectly symmetrical, and you can of course always change which rooms have access to which staircases on different floors. On the whole, I think it's an attractive, offbeat thing, with room to "Add on" to individual rooms if, say, you get a mated pair with child or children. It can be readily extended to any Z-depth or even Z-height if you're that fanatical about placing flooring and walling.

My very first artifact was a statue.

Four or five artifacts down the line I got another statue... OF THE FIRST STATUE. It had an image of the first statue in two different materials on it!

And for getting lots of images of your lone floodgate, count your blessings. My dwarves engrave the most disturbing, disgusting, horrifying and outright terrifying shit you have seen since you took a jaunty sightseeing holiday through Boatmurdered to enjoy the legendary works of Emperor Sankis.

And I pity this one kid. I had ordered his room engraved, wall-to-wall and all the ceilings, and then the goblins hit. They killed his mother, and a snatcher got his sister in the chaos.

Yes, they engraved both scenes in his room. And nothing but a dwarf either being struck down or shot by goblins, or otherwise being harassed by goblins.

I think my Engraving team was out to tramautize the kid for life. They must hate him for being a 1337 siege operator.

Coulden't you lock them indoors? With no way to get out and hunt, woulden't the go to the next prioritized task on their list, which should be record-keeping.

Sorry for that, then. I just tend to assume male as a default, given that, you know, it's The Internets. Fixed my post.  :)

I think you only make one Artifact Image per lifetime, so it should be good, now.

Then again, I dunno. You're right, we need to stock some shell. And gemstones, both cut and noncut, large and regular.
Oh, and some metal. Preferably platinum, aluminum, or adamantine.
And wood. Call me crazy, but I'd prefer stout Oak to Tower-Cap for an artifact construction. Or Feather Tree. Glumspire, maybe...
Some sort of plastic, too, you never know. Maybe aerospace carbon-fibre composite, that's the high-quality stuff.
Glass, definately; crystal only.
Hmmm, maybe light-bulbs. The LED ones are nice, but for an artifact, I'd suggest a High-Intensity Discharge Xenon bulb...

Hmmm...

Isulral, "Faithsilver"

This is an Obsidian Dwarven Fortress. It encircled with walls of steel-backed obsidian and menaces with spikes of steel. It is encircled with moat of water, and has an image of angel wings in Drawbridge.
On the object is an image of a dwarf and a cat in Obsidian. The dwarf is striking down the cat.
On the object is an image of a dwarf in Aluminium. The dwarf is raising a Fortress.
On the object is an image of a caravan and a ballasta in gold. The ballasta is striking down the caravan.

Not quite an artifact, but hopefully amusing and inspiring enough to be worth a draw?
