The french revolutionary wars:
The name may be misleading. France's government was overthrown in an internal revolt, then that new government declared war on several different nations of Europe. It was just ten days after the new government executed Louis the XVI that France declared war on Great Britain and the Netherlands.

.... I actually had nothing else to add.

I think your views on french history are a bit askew. The french revolutionary wars, the Napoleonic wars, its heavy assistance in the american revolutionary war, the thirty years war. I'm not saying they didn't have defeats and surrenders, just that France wasn't always what it is today.

What kind of story are you writing? Will it be in the community forum?

Dwarf is unisex, like human, elf, goblin, geek, etc...

No need for a specific term for women. =)

Oh no, there is an airlock between the workers and the nobles, they will have a place where prepared meals will be placed. They will also get a well, but no alcohol. They don't work, they don't drink. =)

Sure I'll add some fortress pics.

Murdering them would only bring us down to their level.

The human caravan gone, the dwarves were back to work. The second floor now starting to take shape. The miners, engravers and masons had been working around the clock to carve out extravagant rooms. Many were hoping that the room they worked on might soon be their own. Little did they know that being in charge of the fortress had given Kate a big head. When Yanlin, one of the engravers enquired she replied that the rooms would be for the new nobility that would be coming soon. The word soon spread and with it, discontent. They had come here to escape the nobility, not to carve out their summer homes. Kate then made an announcement. These rooms that they were carving out were indeed for nobility, but it would ensure that the nobility and the workers would be kept separate. No demands from any noble would reach the ears of any worker.

Everyone knew that noone could keep the nobility from eventually coming here. So this seemed a fair alternative. Work progressed as the miners dug out the area the engravers would smooth the floor and walls and the rest of the workers would remove the stone. This continued throughout the Autumn. The dwarven caravan had come. Only food and booze producing items were purchased this pass. The winter came and went without incident. All the while the dwarves endured back breaking labor for nobility that had not even come yet.

As spring came, a mood struck the metalworker Pheobos. The man took over the metalworks, and demanded silk. Sadly there was none. His only hope lie in the damnable elves and their caravan. He was doomed. The elven caravan had nothing but rope reed cloth. The goods were seized, and the elves left, but this did nothing to help the poor smith. Slowly, but surely he went insane. The lack of foresight during the last caravan had cost poor Pheobos his mind.

Kate, sure that the goblins would come again with the human caravan, ordered into existence a formal military. There were plenty of volunteers. Crispin, Kyrist, Barrack, Kyterra, and Neosen were each chosen to be the leaders of one the five squads. Everyone knew that had it not been for his wounds Zigzag would have been chosen above anyone to lead a squad. So, in place of that, they elected him to be the Capitan of the Guard. They were sure he would thank them, if he wasn't in a coma.

A short time after the formation of the military the first child of Dangersound was born. Ablel Lashglowed and Ablel Pageticked gave birth to a baby girl. Not to be outdone, Kib Roughnessvalley and Deduk Mutelantern also gave birth to a baby girl. Shortly after a caravan appeared on the horizon...

Ok, so that is up to now. I will try to add more detail and story into the reports, but sometimes a season passes and nothing happens but work. Suggestions are completely welcome.

Fewer immigrants this time around. All put to work immediately. The work is routine until the second dwarven caravan arrives. The woodcutters Zigzag and Inod both spot a group of goblins. The wrestlers were no problem for the two axe wielding dwarves, but the crossbow goblins get a few shots off wounding the two dwarves. Inod, charges through the wrestlers and attacks the crossbowmen. The goblins flee, and the two go to their rooms to rest and recover.

Mook, who has been doing the cooking for the past few months, is suddenly possessed! Mook took up the mason workshop and begun working. When he is finished he finds he has made a magnetite cabinet.

Another season comes to a close, another member of the first 7 gets attacked. Luckily for Zigzag there was another person there to help out. Unfortunately the other woodcutter got all the kills.

The migration brought twenty new dwarves. Some skilled, most not in any useful profession. The newcomers were assigned the task of clearing out their own rooms. One dwarf named Kelly brought a cat with her. Not two days after arriving at the outpost, she became possessed by an unknown force, claiming the nearest craftsdwarf workshop. During this time the cat was locked up in an attempt to stop it from dragging messes around. There was too much work to be done without a cat adding to it. When Kelly snapped out of her trance she held a new chalk drum:

A human caravan arrived soon thereafter, and with it came the goblin menace. The invaders were discovered by an unfortunate peasant, Cog Ceilingpraises. Many a dwarf were ready and willing to face the monsters head on, but were ordered back. No need to risk a dwarven life if the humans are already poised to face off against them. The battle was one-sided, as the humans slaughtered the smaller less experienced goblin force.

Trading went well again for the dwarves, getting much more out of the deal than they put in. Kate did not order any goods seized as the humans had proved themselves as worthwhile. Unfortunately the original attack was just a feint more goblins were waiting. Neo was unfortunately the one to find this group. Two goblin wrestlers, two pikemen and an axeman ambushed him. He didn't stand a chance against them. Getting a few shots off he wounded the goblins chasing a few to the humans in the trade depot, but was struck down before he finished any of them off. The humans, once again, took down the goblin force. The losses this summer were felt hardest by Tesla, who buried her lover that day.

The humans were still resting in the trade depot when we heard another group of migrants coming to the still mourning town of Dangersound...

------------------------------------------------------------

There's the second report, sorry Neo. Unlucky break. There are plenty of other dwarves so feel free to ask for another. =)

In the spring of year 10, the outpost Dangersound was founded by a misfit group hoping for a better life away from the brutal nobility they had come to know back in The Misty Ships. This is their story:

Kate, Mook, Amos, Phoebos, Zigzag, Neo, and Tesla arrived at the edge of the valley. Tired from their journey none of them wanted to start working right away. Yet, they knew they must, if for nothing else, to escape the Giant Eagle that was soaring overhead. Everyone was ordered to dig. After the primary area was dug out they gave up their picks to clear their rooms of rocks. Zigzag braved the outdoors for the wood they would need shortly. After all of their supplies were safely inside they began work on the farming. Kate would take the sweet pods made and make sweet, sweet dwarven syrup. Mook then prepared the syrup into meals. Thanks to her work the dwarven caravan was quite profitable. The outpost was booming.

Looking toward the future Kate ordered the construction of many rooms varying from the meager to the extravagant. The end use of all these rooms was unknown to all but Kate, who refused to give out the full design of the second level. The mining was being done only by Mook and Kate. The others were ordered to look after the upper level.

During this time love was in the air. Couples formed quickly, as before the first winter had even hit Mook and Amos were getting together. Neo and Tesla found love during the cold winter nights. As did Kate and Phoebos. The only one left out of this year of love was Zigzag.

The first year had ended, and they had survived. The last thing anyone wanted to see were the elves that arrived that spring. Kate begrudgingly met with the caravan. Then not so begrudgingly ordered the seizing of all worthwhile goods. The elves ran off in a huff, but moral was boosted to see the stuffy elves go. And as the elves left, on the horizon some new arrivals could be seen.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There it is, the first entry. I'm trying a non first person account this time, mainly because it's more difficult to account for knowledge, and death of the narrator would makes for awkward changes. =)

Thanks to those who have started filling the migrant population, we do still have plenty of slots open, so please feel free to grab one.

All male positions are filled after Tesla. Neo will have to be female or wait for a migration.

Tesla: Sorry Imush was already taken, I gave you the Kel dwarf. As it was the last remaining male.

FoboslC: What did you want your dwarf's name to be?

We have one remaining female dwarf. Any takers?

Hello again one and all, I'm back! My apologies to everyone in my last game, I had an unexpected hospital visit that took me out of the game. Sadly while I was away I also lost my harddrive... Yeah, it sucked. But I'm back and ready to go.

Pick out your dwarf, choose a name, a profession, and how you want to spend your starting points. You will have 70 points to assign to your dwarf. (That is enough to put your dwarf up to proficient in two skills. But you can spend it on items if you want.)

Picks and axes and work tools will be provided.

I will be taking whatever dwarf is unchosen at the end.

The dwarves:

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Your training regimen
« on: February 02, 2009, 11:00:01 pm »
I train up swimming and throwing to legendary, its not that hard. Its time consuming, but worth it after all is said and done. You are much more likely to survive. (Be sure to swim in a warm climate)

Now that you are a legendary swimmer and hopefully armored fairly well, go swimming in a river with carp (Not skeletal, make sure you can leave them in the water). You should be fast enough to catch up and slaughter them. If you get mortally wounded get out of the water, move away far enough to travel and insta-heal. It's unfortunate if you lose an eye or they tear out your throat. But I think you still heal up to stable if you travel. =) Worst case scenario is an instakill hit, but with periodic backup saves you don't really have to worry, is it cheating? Maybe, but I don't like spending hours training only to die while training.

The carp will level your armor fairly quickly, and it will also level your current melee weapon fairly quickly.  I find this a therapeutic training for those who have ever had carp cripple a fortress.

After you feel you are ready to face them, sack a town or two, face up against a few hydras, whatever you were working towards during all that training.

Edit:
Or if push comes to shove and you want a sudden monster of a dwarf, you can cheat and use dwarf companion.

I thought I would share with you all this wonderful tune that basically shows how I play adventure mode, (minus the mentions of magic cold, the fire I do all the time =). )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcbazH6aE2g

enjoy! (I often play the tune during my raids on villages.)
